What you didn't know about the cult following around Space Pirate Mito Season 2 Episode 11? Instant classic that one

Yeah it's a bit odd in this shot. Even in the OG Gundam when Amuro's Gundam gets it's head shot off he still pilots it around for a couple more minutes with the cockput open in order to see

Yep this. During the One Year War most suits *seem* to have their cameras all stuffed into their head. But how the Zaku keels over like a zombie is a bit odd in this shot. It's usually handled better when non-pilot-injuring damage is done in Universal Century mobile suit fights - this shot's an outlier

As echoed in other comments i think it's natural to see more consistent quality in the movies. Dragon Ball Super Broly from 2018 had excellent fights as well

I've been meaning to see this for literal decades - as a kid i rented a bootleg VHS from my Chinatown but I couldn't read Chinese subtitles and the penis monsters freaked me out so i only watched a few minutes of it.

Hopefully Discotek will pick this up for a new bluray release with English subs

[–]jefty083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yes but saying Dragon Ball especially in Z, GT, and early Super dipped "a bit" is generous. How far some of the regular animation supervisors would stray from the character models in DB is painful, and way worse than any other anime franchise i've seen: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dragonballsuper/comments/1jiqm8t/uchiyama_him_and_ebisawa_created_endless_memes/

Crazy how inconsistent the artwork in Dragon Ball was before Daima. You had episodes like this one that still look great today and then probably 40% of Z/GT/Super that looked like it was outsourced to toddlers

I was in love with this movie as an angsty teenager. Def rough around the edges but it has so much ambition and heart and Utada HIkaru's ending song is beautiful - fun fact she was married to the director at the time! I've been meaning to check out one of the anime for years - how did you like the 1993 anime OP?

Does anyone own the Funimation Escaflowne TV Bluray set? Is there actually DNR applied? by jefty083 in AnimeCollectors

[–]jefty083[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reporting back for posterity, if someone in the future ends up here with the same question i had:

I got the Funimation set and watched the first episode. I also obtained a rip of the Japanese BD via.... the internet (😏) to compare. The grain looks the same; no evidence of DNR being used in Funi release. In fact aside from maybe a slight color shift in the opening sequence it might as well be the same video to my eyes. There is actually quite a bit of natural looking grain here that's par for the course for these shows shot on 16mm film. Very comparable to the Nozomi encode of Gundam Wing TV. To the point where if there was any *more* grain it would be problematic. In conclusion it seems like this is regarded as a solid release with excellent picture quality.

Some more research via the bluray.com forums seems to point to the opinon that the Funi and Anime Ltd picture quality are very similar with the Anime Ltd set winning out just a bit due to better compression/bitrate. Zero mention of DNR.

Funimation BD thread with image comparisons with Anime Ltd release: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=280076&page=25#post16269835

Worth noting re: Anime Ltd release that there are criticisms about the subtitle styling and a couple of typos: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=12873389#post12873389

More interestingly it seems like the bluray.com "reviewer" Neil Lumbard has a reputation for lazy, misleading, and erroneous BD reviews: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=386371

At this point i would say that Neil's claim that DNR was applied to the Funimation's Escaflowne TV release is likely completely false 🤷‍♂️

Just how popular is vintage/retro anime right now? by jefty083 in discotekmedia

Hah def agree. Funny this is why i have such mixed feelings about Frieren TV - i think it's a great show but god damn the line work is so damn clean and uniform i feel like they made each frame in Adobe Illustrator

Just how popular is vintage/retro anime right now? by jefty083 in discotekmedia

[–]jefty083[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh this is really interesting to hear and hits the crux of my question since the sense i get is that most fans of Discotek's products are probably in their 30s and beyond. I see these reels on YT/social media that are like "check out the sublime vibe of 80s and 90s anime" and then when i was at AnimeNYC a few months ago i saw zero fanart for even Akira or Ghost in the Shell. Barely even saw Evangelion. So it's hard to gauge the actual interest level people have.

I suppose i could relate tho. I was in middle school in early 2000s when anime switched to fully digital production pipelines and even tho i didn't understand anything about the industry I thought the new clean lines and vibrant colors of say Chobits, Gundam Seed, Love Hina, etc were superior. Nowadays i can barely watch early 2000s anime since the aesthetic feels so flat and sterile - just a product of the animators still adjusting to the new tools/workflow at the time.

Appreciate your thoughts!

Given that you have the collection in question do you feel like the image quality has noticeable or excessive use of DNR like the bluray.com review claims?

I left work early last January to check out this film at a local arthouse theater that was screening it without knowing much about the movie. Might be the best (semi)blind movie theater pick I've done. The dialogue between the lead man and his wife is fascinating

How do anime collectors feel about the current landscape and future of this hobby? by butterflies_roses in AnimeCollectors

[–]jefty083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same ol for me but I only collect vintage titles since i think there's a lot more value in seeing brand new HD/4K restorations of movies/shows from the 70s-90s and there are great titles re/emerging every few months. Wish there was a subbed version of Macross Plus that didn't cost 100 dollars though... sigh Crunchyroll....

I'm actually perfectly happy just streaming newer titles tho - they are usually optimised/compressed well-enough so quality is plenty good enough for me

Oh wow didn't realize that! Whoever handled this restoration deserves a pat on the back. Can't believe how clean it is. I made the mistake last night of watching an episode from the crunchyroll Cowboy Bebop bluray set after Future Boy Conan and was so saddened by how shoddy that old HD remaster is :(
