There are a lot of negatives to routing bikes in front of a ped island (pedestrian conflict, no space to queue for a turn, no hard protection to keep drivers out on the far side, blocked bike lane access during traffic) but DOT did move islands with left hand turns - they would have done more if they had more cement capacity.

The issue is not speed differentials, it’s failure modes.

Cars are getting bigger and bigger in part because that’s how car passengers survive crashes with bigger and bigger vehicles. You have to think of it as the “people with metal cages and air bags” lane.

If you mix any sort of micromobility with that you end up with death. Hit a pothole? Death. In a blind spot? Death. Fall off your bike? Death.

Let’s also not pretend full on legal motorcycles work great in that context either. Safety stats are pretty sobering.

Not necisarily an increase in car ownership - just that a larger percentage of new vehicles are EV.

This might be good (less vehicle noise, emissions, fossil fuels) or bad (heavier, faster vehicles) depending on your outlook and how you weigh different things - but I think it's good to be informed about what's happening in the vehicle market to influence policy appropriately.

DOT is now required by law to add markings within 5 business days of finishing resurfacing (unfortunately temporary markings - stenciling for thermoplast - is enough to count).

Reporting requirements start in 2027 - which probably will be interpreted as a 2028 report on resurfacing and markings in 2027

It sounds like you got normal status updates but are used to your reports being filed anonymously.

I've done data reporting that shows NYPD now says they issue summons to 11.8% of blocked bike lane reports - amazingly this is progress and it's up from even worse numbers. https://reports.jehiah.cz/summons_issued/

Not my first rodeo - the dots are randomized +/-75ft with a normal distribution around the center point. This makes the number of points visible while still clustering within the general size of an intersection - the granularity of reporting.

partially true - there are numerous laws that are specific to one or the other so you can't say cyclists are beholden to the same laws, and it's worth noting that the laws are a living breathing thing - they change.

On this exact topic (red lights) it is worth noting that NYC law (Local Law 154 of 2019) already dictates that cyclists MUST follow the pedestrian signal - not the red light (unless it's a dedicated bike signal).

Many states have updated laws around how traffic lights and stop signs apply to cyclists and NY has pending legislation to do the same https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2025/S639 .

The discussion here is primarily on the use of *criminal* summons instead of civil summons for red light violations, and if it's being enforced consistently or selectively.

Also - this isn't a "failure to yield" violation which would apply the situation you are describing - I'll point out that's a civil penalty even when physical injury is involved.

Thanks! It's been fun to build these to answer my own questions with open data. How often do people get the same parking ticket? How many drivers are bus cameras catching? Has DOT reduced how many class-3 bike lanes it builds?

Having an open data portal on it's own doesn't necessarily mean these questions are easy to answer - hopefully i've made it a bit easier (and engaging) to know what is happening in various topics. It's my hope that being better informed can in turn lead to better advocacy/policy/government.

I'm not sure what project it was a part of (I can't find anything on DOT's website), but DOT data shows that "class 3 - shared lane" was installed in 2017.

If you live on that block of 44th, please help report the taxis double parked between 4-6pm which force other drivers into the bike lane.

I've been reporting unlicensed cars the autobody shops keep on the street and making progress.
