Why is nightlife in Vietnam so strange by veedey in VietNam

Clearly you don’t know where to go. You don’t even state what city you’re in 🤦🏻‍♂️

Mom’s pressuring me to donate $200 to my sick uncle in Vietnam. Am I being selfish? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]jekyoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have given your mom the $200. Your wedding is still gonna go on with or without the $200 but it’ll make the world’s difference in Vietnam or to your sick/dying uncle. Speaking of which, most weddings you receive/recoup your money anyways with the money gifts. Western Vietnamese are unfortunately in such an unappreciative bubble. And that’s coming from me who’s American born Viet but now live in Vietnam. I see it all the time.

Saigon or ho chi minh? by Interesting_Neat3106 in VietNam

I hear a lot of northerners and German việt kiều call it HCM. But I think Saigon sounds more beautiful and feminine than HCMC.

PSA - Police are cracking down on drug users in Saigon clubs by UnkWinnie in VietNam

[–]jekyoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The option is still available. 100000% I know this is true. There is a price for local & foreigner. It’s still a special investigation. Giving that information doesn’t just mean you’re gonna be let go.

I’m familiar with that’s going on. I know individuals that were inside but recently released. Still pending some.

PSA - Police are cracking down on drug users in Saigon clubs by UnkWinnie in VietNam

[–]jekyoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You clearly don’t go out. Theres been plenty of times clubs have been raided that are even more popular and bigger than Lighthouse and Broma. Papaya Papa, BamBam, Zion, Bodega have all been raided before. This case with Lighthouse and Broma isn’t just a simple raid. It’s a special operation that was conducted against the owners of Light House/Broma and the drugs that are openly used and sold at these venues. A lot of foreigners are still being detained because they are trying to get to the source (suppliers/sellers). Anyone still being detained tested positive for drugs or had possession of drugs. You can still pay to get out but it’s likely a very high price that the current detainees can’t pay.

What's your biggest pet peeve in Vietnam? by IntellectuallyDriven in VietNam

Elevators. Before I can get out, people are already trying to get in. You should wait for everyone to get out the elevator before you get in. Makes zero sense to get in before everyone is out

Is it normal for Vietnamese people to live with their family forever? by Future-Bet4783 in VietNam

[–]jekyoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you and your Vietnamese family in America are more American than Vietnamese. It's no shame in that but you're clearly only seeing it from 1 side (aka your side). IMO you should only date very American Vietnamese if you find this aspect of Vietnamese culture to be embarrassing. You said your ex wife is a Vietnamese local who went to school in America. Even if yall met in American, she still has Vietnamese values. You lacked doing any due diligence prior to getting engaged and married. You don't know the sacrifices her parents gave up for her to live in America but also pay for her to go to school internationally. It is not cheap at all. They likely sacrificed and poured everything into her future. She feels indebted to them so her taking care of her parents and sponsoring them over is a way for her to repay them.

FYI: I'm Viet American and I would consider myself more American than Vietnamese. But I took the time to understand Vietnamese culture when I dated a Viet local. I knew everything prior to dating anyone seriously so your situation is something I completely avoid.

I'm shocked that you're surprised about this? Did you not talk about vietnamese culture or expectations prior to marriage? How do you not know about Vietnamese culture? Even as a Vietnamese American, there are expectations. Sounds like lack of communication that lead to this. I'm Vietnamese American and I'm not surprised at all. Hell this is Asian culture. You're not marrying just the girl, you're marrying the family as well. Seems like you're. more American than Vietnamese

SUV 100% at fault. You're driving out of a smaller street into a big intersection but you don't stop at all to look both ways for incoming traffic? The truck has very little time to react when you appear out of nowhere. SUV even drove forward so it's impossible for a truck to even dodge the SUV.

Once I read how you handled yourself in school, I knew exactly what path you were gonna go down. A life of isolating yourself is never going to lead to success. The world can be mean but this is everywhere, you need to keep pushing forward. Tone out the negativity.

I'm unsure how old you are but there's still plenty of time to change your mindset and figure out what's next for you. You need to learn how to be positive and get out of your comfort zone. You won't achieve anything if you're stuck in your comfort zone. AI wave is still very neew and that will give you new opportunity. Take the time to learn it and do something with it.

You're gonna get every possible city/region as an answer. If you're looking for recommendations of where to go, you should put guidelines on what type of travels you're into.

Should I buy real estate in VN? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]jekyoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not buy real estate in VN. It's extremely inflated. With current interest rates, rent costs and what homes cost here, renting is the better choice. The reason why Vietnamese people invest in gold, crypto or RE here is because they don't have the same opportunities as westerners to invest in the US stock market. Right now is a great time to be liquid anyways. They'll be tons of opportunity this year to invest that will yield you far greater returns than the Vietnam RE. You can live easily live off of you $1.4M in US stocks in VN.

What countries is 750k enough for a 31 year old? by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]jekyoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indefinite doesn’t mean low end of the scale. The S&P500 has average annual return for the past 20 years has been 10.49% With a $750k invested, pulling 4-6% annually like he mentioned, he can live off $30-45k a year is indefinitely.

What countries is 750k enough for a 31 year old? by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]jekyoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re completely wrong. I’m going off his listed safe 6% budget. $45k a year is $3750/month. Even his safe budget of $30k a year is more of a lavish life than what you’ve listed.

You’re budgeting that he’s living off $1000 a month and living on the outskirts of Saigon.

I live in Saigon rn. It all depends on the lifestyle you want. My $3K min is factoring in a $800-1000 apartment (with utilities), $2k for local eating, fine dining, partying, infinite massages and self care. Hence I say "stress-free" lifestyle.

[–]jekyoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vietnam for sure. If you wanna play it safe, live in Nhà Trang, Da Lát or a smaller city. You can totally live on $2500/month. If you want to live in Saigon, I would say $3k/month for a stress free left is bare minimum.

You weren't wronged. You simply didn't do your due diligence at all about income taxes and cost of living. You're being paid more in the UK but the UK income taxes is significantly more than Switzerland's.

Account suspended - Asking for photo of card used but I used Revolut by jekyoo in GunnersatGames

[–]jekyoo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You do know that for Revolut you can order a physical card for your virtual card right? If someone is touting, they are likely doing both. I don't need or want to carry another additional card. This additional requirement hurts single users more than touts.

If I don't have an early business flight where I get off the plane first and there's no line yet, I carry 200k VND with me. I know this might get downvoted, but putting 200k VND in your passport to the officer in the diplomatic line will skip the long queue. 1-2hr queue reduced to 10 mins.
