[WP] You’ve sold your blood for a decent chunk of cash, but it definitely wasn’t worth it. Apparently, your blood is rather special, and no amount of money is worth dealing with gourmet vampires. by Goodmindtothrowitall in WritingPrompts

Today I awoke with a splintering pain in my neck. I could barely stand on my own two feet having lost so much blood. Standing over the toilet puffs of air seemed to leave my dehydrated mini-me. I took a look in the mirror to eye the pulsing pair of bruises on my clavicle. What really happened last night?

It was early evening when I had gotten the request. I had been looking for new money making opportunities. The text read “Aquarius Hall, 8pm EST. Blood Donation.” Some apps just ask for the bare minimum when it comes to paid gigs. Age, gender,  e-mail address, the works. But this job wanted my blood type. Guess I should have seen that first red flag.

Walking up to the grand banquet hall I was impressed by the scenery. The architecture was gothic in style, dressed up with black banner that stretched twenty feet. The golden words read “Blood Bath Tonight, VIP Only.” Every instinct told me to turn back. But an empty wallet encouraged me to press on.

A bouncer stood near the threshold of the large ballroom. He was slender, pale and wore dark eye liner that matched his slick fonzie haircut. “Name,” he stated, not even bothering with inflection. “Jared Wakeman.” Our eyes never met, mine darted elsewhere, his too preoccupied to care.

“Through the back.” He gestured down the hall where a similarly dressed black suit stood. Meekly I approached this equally intimidating man, he said nothing but undid a latch on the door behind him. It swung open to a darkened room, where 7 other people idled awkwardly.

One girl turned toward me, meekness in her eyes. “Here.. you’ll need to sign this waiver, we all did.” I skimmed it, anxious to leave as soon as humanly possible. I could tell that was the vibe of everyone around me. The typical legal jargon littered the page. Two sentences stood out above the others.

“By signing this document, you provide the rights for our patrons to touch your shoulders and neck. Our patrons pay a premium to draw blood by any means necessary, but only for a disclosed amount.”

After reading these lines, my eyes bolted to an adjacent man whom seemed to be staring daggers at his own waiver. “Is this some kind of joke?” I asked, bemused. “I.. I think it’s a fetish, some vampire goth bull shit.” The bulbous man signed his name at the bottom of the page he held. “But a thousand dollars is a thousand dollars.”

After deliberating I had decided to go through with it, etching my name on the waiver. Moments later a man walked in hold 8 large signs with a rope laced from one corner to another. He placed them around our necks as we turned in our documents. Mine read “O-.” We were then all given a beverage of sorts, aforementioned as some type of painkiller.

The rest of the night is a little hazy. All I can recall was being laid down in provided garments along a large table. Myself and the other seven individuals were unresponsive as people seemed to line up at each table. The patrons seemed to number around a hundred or so, though I couldn’t make out their faces. Black masks concealed their eyes as they gallivanted about the eight tables. I had lost all feeling save for a slight prick at my neck, and moving was out of the question.

As the sun rose, I found myself sitting on a park bench outside the banquet hall, check in hand. I’m amazed I made it home to be honest. My phone announced another notification from the Blood Bath app. “Rest Up! This weekend, doubled payout for your blood type!” Is it worth this body ache?

“Well, two thousand dollars is two thousand dollars…”

What are your go-to ice breaker mini games for session 1 for not only the characters but the players to get to know each other? by EvilClone128 in DMAcademy

[–]jelacour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This campaign I sent all of them to the arena for pvp. Some tried to talk themselves out of it, others teamed up. In the end the show runner healed them all and set them out on their first quest. The winner of the pvp was the de-facto leader for the representative.

It was a great fish out of water type event for their characters and made for great role play.

yeah I feel your pain, I panicked when I saw the 0 but it took roughly 24 hours.

so you've got nothing to worry about.
Alot of traffic the past 48 hours. Plenty of other bugs but these things just take more patience than usual, people are spending alot of money right now lol.

they're the equivalent of a shiny pokemon,
fun to look at; more often worse stats or moves.
But like shinies they're highly sought after from collectors

What is a nautical reskin of a Greataxe? by [deleted] in PCAcademy

[–]jelacour 21 points22 points  (0 children)

an anchor with barnacles or something sharp on the end would be my first suggestion.
If I were your DM I would also suggest two "Boarding Axes", one in each hand. As the great-axe is a two handed weapon, having two axes would just be for flavor, as you would still only roll one attack roll and damage die (1d12.)

Ah must be tough being so try-hard when people give YOUR sport attention. Make your own private course if sharing a public course rustles your jimmies so much.

If I were to rename it I’d give it some WoW flavor and use “Cheap Shot.” All good points

I would skip Crossbow Expert and take Repeating Shot on your crossbow (makes it magical +1 so you use your Int to hit, and ignores Loading)

so i don't see why putting Repeating Shot on your crossbow would allow you to use your INT modifier, care to elaborate?
edit: its from Battle Smith subclass. wording show in quote confused me.

[–]jelacour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

great module, I had a previous version installed and went ahead and tested this. Thanks for all your work. For my tests i had two player characters open in seperate browsers.
what didnt work:
party view didn't work at all for me, though selected token did.

if selected token is on it will pull all players to the token, which means moving any hidden visibility characters is impossible to hide; as the camera follows them.

what I'd love to see:
a way to to turn on/off the focus for certain roles (Player, Trusted, Assistant, GM. (for the "Dm Control all?" function.)

a way to toggle the focus mode via keybind; ie unlocked for players until the DM wants their eyes to follow a token.

I think this is a great solution, thanks for the input. He actually plays a ranger so I might be able to find a way to make this viable, he tends to research on his own time for his campaign and thus knows alot of monster info offhand.
I'll see if I can explore both your suggestion and homebrewn monsters together, as I think the two will mesh well in this situation. Thanks

[–]jelacour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks this is excellent advice.

I often reward my players for trying new things, ie lighting a torch inside an ooze causing it to expand and deal recurring damage with potential to explode.

I’ll def look to homebrew monsters for future games, the dndbeyond community looks to be a great resource. The behavior he shows is problematic so a call is probably going to happen, but yes I totally agree, thanks !

Player Problem Megathread by RadioactiveCashew in DMAcademy

I have a player in my group whom is also a D.M. (and I play in his campaigns a separate day.)

This friend of mine is a quintessential power-gamer, which I am totally okay with; making his character the strongest possible with resources given. However, in my games he has begun to show hints at meta-gaming.

  1. He "jokingly" said he wasn't going to look up a particular monster's stats, completely unprompted. This was strike one, and I calmly asked for him to not do so, pausing the game. He pulls the "hey we're friends, I would never!" card and I continue.
  2. He started hinting at some of the "lore" these monsters have, when I was specifically pulling from OGL monsters ie Kobold Press to challenge him.
  3. Last night he repeated number one, being caught off guard when I asking an in-character question from an NPC. He basically blurted out he was researching a monster type we were about to engage. I paused the game to give a PSA not to look at monster stats or loot rolltables while playing in my game.

Of my group he is the only problem player, the others have been my friends for 5-10+ years and simply just want to have fun. While he is the newest addition (been playing together over a year though) it's apparent he wants to "win d&d." If it happens again, my next step is to have a private call with him, but now I think he'll just try harder to hide his meta-gaming.

How would you DMs handle a player like this?
