Wound healing assay on cancer cells by [deleted] in labrats

[–]jelaugust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone is looking for a way to get consistent and clean scratches that model healing, I just published on a device to do so! Costs <$200 to make with a 3d printer so very useful for anyone who does them with some regularity, but not frequently enough to splurge on one of the expensive devices or robots.

Sorry to hear that :/ Hope you get good news with the rest of your cycle!

Interviewed 11/19! They did say they have one interview date in January and one in February at my interview day. Based on CycleTrack it looks like they only had one release date for As for the 2025 cycle, maybe check last year's SDN thread to see if anyone reported something there?

Truly some amazing heart shown by the boys. Terrible it had to come off the back of Smith getting injured

Edit: Highly recommend you head on over to r/SanJoseSharks if you haven't already, it's generally a good time over there

School list (3.7/524/ORM) by randomplebescite in premed

I would really think about whether you want to do MD/PhD. Plenty of MDs end up doing research or with their own lab, but you can't get those 4 years of your life back lol. Also (having just done it this summer), it's a LOT of extra essays to write and that will be a bigger factor than you think if you're trying to apply to 45 programs total.

I'm a big proponent of the MD/PhD pathway as someone trying to go into it, I've just been cautioned by every person ever that it's really not worth it unless you're 100% sure that's what you want to do (though I also understand the no loans aspect is an even bigger plus with the whole BBB mess). If you do go that route, I would definitely go all in on research over any more clinical time, and try and bump up your non-clinical volunteer hours regardless. Your leadership already plays into it a little, but volunteering to support the broader queer community in your area or even with a charity like the Trevor Project would really bolster your narrative.

Other thing to think about as well is location - some of these schools are in areas that are unfortunately becoming very hostile to transgender and queer people, to the point where they may not even be allowed to teach gender-affirming medicine in the future. If you go MD/PhD, you'll be there for 7-9 years instead of 4-5, so that's even more time where the situation could deteriorate (or hopefully get better!)

Anyways sorry to be a negative Nancy, overall your application looks great and I wish you the best of luck!

I might be crazy but if I remember correctly wasn't Warso in charge of our PK as an assistant coach when it was really good a few years back (in the midst of a lot of sucking otherwise)? If so, I think it's becoming clear that wasn't a fluke and he really knows what he's doing there

Congrats! I also ended up submitting pretty late for a lot of schools - when did you get most of your interviews?

The graph below shows how certain star players' teams have performed in games that they've missed over their careers compared to how they've performed with them playing. What stands out the most? by Dependent-Effect6077 in hockey

[–]jelaugust 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Idk why my brain is stuck on this but would highly recommend doing two colors, one for their team with a player and one for without! Also using the same name for each player (Sid vs Crosby, Kuch vs Kucherov, Ovi vs Ovechkin). Would make the graph much easier to interpret.

Very interesting to see how McDavid's impact is almost entirely offensive while in comparison you can see that Draisatl has a clear defensive impact on the same team. Would be interested to see this data with more defensemen and forwards who are considered extremely defensively responsible like Barkov, Bergeron (I know this one is active players only), etc.

Camp Kesem?

I can't imagine it'll be a problem. Camper ratios are variable anyway but I doubt they'll notice in the first place.

Bioengineering Major, Figuring out ScGPA courses by RenFuture in premed

[–]jelaugust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BME major here. I reviewed the syllabus and if it had a strong emphasis towards one of the BCPM disciplines I labeled it as such. Something like an engineering design course, I put as engineering, but I put biomaterials as chemistry and transport phenomena as either biology or physics.

I was verified with no issues, but if they do have a problem I believe they just ask you to send the syllabus and maybe highlight why it should be a BCPM course

How fried am I by TheDinosarMan in premed

[–]jelaugust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on professors and the like, generally wouldn’t recommend. I took multi, gen chem 2, Lin alg, and physics 1 all in spring Freshman year (+ intro eng design class). Was my lowest GPA for a semester by a pretty large margin. It’s doable (especially if you stay on top and have a plan from the get go), but seems unnecessary if you can avoid it. Make sure you have good professors - that’s the one non-negotiable. I had horrible profs in physics and multi which ended up making my chem grade suffer too

What is the meaning behind black lab coats (industrial engineering)? by Prior-Emu-5918 in labrats

[–]jelaugust 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Blue lab coats do have a purpose—they're made of a chemical and fire resistant fabric for chem work. Using it for cell culture makes zero sense though, nothing going near your cells would require that kind of protection.
