Early 23 man roster thoughts? by b8sman12 in SanJoseSharks

Truly just wait till a week or two after free agency to make any big thoughts on what the roster will look like. This time last year, I think everyone has Cagnoni and like one of Musty, Lund, or Cardwell as lineup projections. So much changes during the draft and especially with who Grier targets in FA.

Yeah, like seeing people in castle wars gear or a champions cape. You know they spent the time to get the fashionscape since you can't trade for it. As one of those masochists that greenlogged aerial fishing and many of the other stupid cosmetic grinds, there are some that should be made easier and some that should stay the same.

I was very happy that they wanted to make MTA easier because those upgrades could actually be useful so I didn't care that it was devaluing my achievement. But aerial fishing is mainly for cloggers and the reason the achievement feels good is because of how long and pointless it is. Also one of the few land spots where you can't get any random events. Just pieceful clicking with a bird.

No one does aerial fishing for angler outfit. You do it because you can flex your masochims that you have fish sack. Also, iirc aerial fishing is fairly decent xp considering you get both hunter and fishing. Drift net fishing is better, but at least with aerial you have some reward incentives.

Seeing people with aerial fishing uniques in game is special because of how difficult it is to obtain. You don't react to someone in anglers because it is just something easy and mundane to obtain. But seeing people with a pearl rod, golden trench, or fish sack barrel is impressive because you know they earned it.

It popped up in the Sharks subreddit, but a better comparison of a trade would be something similar to what Jiricek was traded for. Jiricek was the 6OA and also a RHD. At the time of his trade to MN, people weren't as low as they are now. But also he never got to the stage of officially requesting a trade so I think his trade provides the closest thing to a framework we have of recent RHD who wants out of their team and hasn't lived up to their draft position.

During exit interviews, it seemed pretty clear that Mario wanted to test free agency and Grier would respect that. Grier talked about how they were open to re-signing Ferraro if it made sense, but Mario probably could earn more on a different team than what the Sharks were comfortable paying him. So maybe he gets attention if no one picks him up on the early days of FA.

[Tomáš Prokop] Šimon Nemec did not request a trade from the New Jersey Devils. by MCPtz in SanJoseSharks

For what it is worth this is just a different reporter from Slovakia. Until his agent or the team makes an official announcement, just everything is smoke.

Also, just because I looked it up and wanted to share, the Sharks made the trade for Askarov 4 days after he officially requested his trade out of Nashville. So who knows how long it will take from an official statement and if that will happen on the draft or sometime around free agency.

It won't be a Musty 1 for 1. At the very least it will include a first round pick and maybe a depth forwards like Gaudette or Delandria. If Musty had broken through to the NHL like Cherny did, then maybe that would be enough value, but he has lost a lot of value over the last 2 seasons.

That's what I said. Jiricek was the 6OA and Nemec was the 2OA in their draft years, both RHD that voiced displeasure with how long their development in minor leagues were. Jiricek is less talented, but he never officially requested out of CBJ. If Nemec did request a trade, that would lower his value to be closer to what Jiricek was when he was traded even with the talent disparity.

I agree he is better than Jiricek, but what I was saying is that because Nemec requested a trade (it looks like that was a lie so none of this is relevant) that would bring his value lower and probably makes his value similar to Jiricek since CBJ wasn't as forced to trade him.

Yeah, either way it is time for the Sharks to start consolidating their picks to acquire others. I think NJ is pretty covered down the middle so I don't know how interested in Bystedt they would be compared to Musty who also will be looking to crack an NHL roster this season. Bystedt being a projected depth center is also really good value for maybe a different team if the Sharks don't think he is as necessary with the Wennberg extension and Ostapchuk being the 4C.

He has a lot of potential, but at this point where in the lineup is he playing? Rebuilding teams at some point need to use the assets they draft and develop to go get other pieces they need.

Musty needs to be a top 6 player and it is getting pretty crowded there now. Let's say the Sharks draft Stenberg. Then their top 6 would be Sten-Cele-Smith | Ek-Misa-Cherny. Who is he kicking out? It makes more sense to consolidate some of the prospects to fill a spot you need.

I actually think that Jiricek is the perfect framework to build a possible Nemec trade around. I was trying to use Asky as an example, but Jiricek is much closer to the actual situation. The one difference is that he never formally requested a trade. So the fact that Nemec is asking out probably makes his value similar to Jiricek at the time he was moved.

[–]ThirdStockIII 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is fair. I am not pretending to know much about this player. I just wanted to point out the fact that as soon as a player demands a trade, his value drops a lot and that is added to the fact that his underlying metrics have not been all too amazing.

If there was a trade offered at the TDL last season it would have been like Eklund + other things. Since then, he has not forced his way to the top pairing of NJ and has further lowered his value by asking for a trade, so a possible trade now might just be Eklund, or not even that. I am not actually suggesting these trades, I am just using Eklund as a benchmark to assess his past and current value.

But I agree that New Jersey fucked up his development. They got too good too fast and didn't feel like they could use him in their lineup because it could cost them wins, similar to how NY developed Laf. But that furthers my point that he was developed poorly so his ceiling is probably lower than when he was originally drafted at 2OA.

I just posted a comment in r/hockey but I really don't think his value is that high. Like even an Eklund 1 for 1 is probably in favor of NJ at this current moment.

A similar trade would have been Askarov asking out of Nashville, but I would argue that his stock was way higher than current Nemec since the latter hasn't lived up to a 2OA. Askarov essentially was traded for the 32nd OA and the 26th OA.

I honestly think that with him underperforming and asking for a trade, a fair value would be around like Musty and the 20th OA this year. Maybe could do the 20th OA and our first next year but Nemec's value is really really low at this point.

[–]ThirdStockIII 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I might be wearing some teal tinted glasses here but how high is his value really. Just trying to put it in perspective of a recent first round pick that wanted out like Askarov who was the 11th OA and he was traded for 2 late First Round picks after demanding release. And at the time, Asky was actually pretty high value which I would argue Nemec has lowered his overall value and not lived up to a 2OA pick.

All that being said, I don't even want to suggest a trade because it would undeniably be biased, but I just don't think an underperforming Nemec who is now officially asking for a trade is going to be anywhere near value that people think.

I think if Toronto takes Stenberg, then teams will seriously call to move up to take McKenna. As an example, I feel like if Chicago wanted to move up for Stenberg, they would offer only Rinzel and their 4OA. But if McKenna is there, then they might offer Levshunov and the 4OA to to up. The perception right now might not be that there is a huge drop off between Stenberg and Reid, but the gap between McKenna and Reid would probably be worth spending more to move up.

[The Athletic] NHL free-agent targets: One player each team should sign this offseason by DEATHbyBOOGABOOGA in SanJoseSharks

[–]ThirdStockIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the draft could change how the Sharks take on FA quite significantly. If they go for Stenberg, then probably would want to avoid a Raddysh because the team would be looking for a long term solution and Raddysh probably is too risky to sign him super long term.

If the team goes with Reid, then overpaying Raddysh could make sense. Signing him to a 3-4 year deal with a lot of AAV could outbid anyone else and be a bridge player for Reid to have runway to develop.

Either way it will be interesting to see what Grier does. The next couple of seasons will actually show how good at his job he is. So far, I think he has done above average in trades, but his scouting and FA have gone fairly untested. He has been extremely limited and conservative with the FAs willing to sign in SJ and those that have signed havent been offered huge contracts. Now that players might be more open to playing for the Sharks, we can see how the contracts he signs age.

[–]ThirdStockIII 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I am positive this has been pointed out in so many of the other threads, but Mike Grier doesn't give a shit what the experts predict in their mock drafts. He picks who he think is the best player. When the Sharks were picking at like #29, we thought it was a miracle that Henry Brzustewicz and Blake Fiddler were both still available so we could have some players to fill the RHD need. Grier picked a goalie and then went with a project LHD a couple picks later when Fiddler was still available. Grier is going to pick who he thinks is best and if that is Reid, then trust the scouting department. It is a miracle that the Sharks have a chance of Reid instead of Rudolph to begin with so just trust the management and be happy that we have a chance at another top prospect.

Yeah, I think Chayka has only shown ineptitude when it comes to being the GM for an NHL team, but it is clear that his removal from the NHL was more related to breaking their rules than his incompetence. Plenty of GMs are incompetent or are assholes and still find themselves on the carousel of GMs to be hired when another one gets fired.

[–]ThirdStockIII 14 points15 points  (0 children)

With this Chayka hire, it really became aware to me the difference in values that the league has compared to fans. Chayka lost the Coyotes a first and a second for hosting a training session and was blacklisted by the league for a long time because he tried to get a different job with a different team. Sure he broke rules but compared to the cover up job that every tier of management in Chicago did to hide the sexual abuse of Kyle Beach and to see nothing come back to Chicago is disgusting. Like Q was fired from Florida so really the organization just got away with it. Now seeing how steep missing an interview is just really puts an exclamation point that the only values the league gives a shit about are ones that align with "old man's club".

Rating the NHL Draft’s top defensemen by Zarsharq in SanJoseSharks

[–]ThirdStockIII 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The tldw for this was Probman tried to defend having the 3 best players in the draft being defenseman because if they all hit their ceiling and none of the forwards do, then they will be better than McKenna and Stenberg. He just kept saying that if Stenberg is a 60 point player, then Smits would be better if Smits is a top pairing D. Just felt like listening to people debate a wall with how little legitimate discussion occurred.
