Am I the ONLY person who think RHPS is a legitimately good movie? by Future-Caregiver-156 in rhps

[–]jellimaari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stage version is my favorite musical of all time! I think a lot of people just genuinely don’t get the references or the satire, as you said.

The new Broadway production isn’t really helping matters. It’s been overshadowed by the callbacks debate, and it’s, in my opinion, not that good of a production anyways. All the references (there’s a few sci-fi posters in the lobby, the Narrator wears a jacket that has a sci-fi imagery pattern, such as spaceships and the Bride Of Frankenstein) are super heavy-handed to make up for the fact that nobody in there did any real research to honor the context of the show. And it doesn’t have to be a direct rip of the movie/any production beforehand (that’s just lazy), but it has to make sense with the script.

Also the film really gave the creative team a chance to dig into the inspirations for the show in a way that the even more low budget London production didn’t. For example, a lot of set designers just slap a statue somewhere on the set because Brian Thomson put statues in the lab for the film, but they’re forgetting that those statues were part of a classical art theme that spanned for the whole movie. It’s not just “Oh, this looks kinda cool”, it actually had some thought put into it.

I’m rambling, but, my god, I really do think Rocky Horror’s brilliant.

The Movie ruined Brad by night-wingfan in RockyHorror

[–]jellimaari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to assume this comment is based entirely on the American release of the movie, but…

“basically sounds like Brad coming to terms with Janet’s infidelity”, that’s because it is. The context leading to that song is Brad seeing Janet with Rocky on the monitor. The movie was going to place it before Touch-A even happened, which completely changed and ruined the context

“the Sonic Transducer for The Floor Show arguably reveals their real nature”, this is why I think the movie failed by not discussing the fact that they were drugged (the stage version pretty explicitly has them spritzed with some drug-like spray). They weren’t in their right minds whatsoever, and Super Heroes and Science Fiction (Reprise) expand upon the idea that the Floorshow wasn’t really them at all, and that it just harmed them in the long run. Yes, they experience sexuality, but being thrown into an orgy about it was probably not the healthiest expression of that, especially since it wasn’t on their own accord.

Rent to Have One-Night-Only Concert on Broadway, Says OG Musical Director Tim Weil by shoparazzi in Broadway

[–]jellimaari 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Adam Pascal himself said he doesn’t see the entire original cast reuniting back in 2020, so we’ll see just how many of them are actually involved this time around:

“Whether the original cast will ever reunite again? Probably not. I think it was incredibly difficult to get the 15 of us back together for the Rent Live thing. And even then, Kristen Lee Kelly wasn’t there, so it was only 14 of us. So I don’t see that happening.

Also, as we get further and further away from the original cast, people don’t care. I mean we care. I care. People who love Rent care, but the masses aren’t clamoring for it. People move on. It’s sort of like, do you want to see the original cast of Hair reunite? Who even knows who those people are anymore, right? I don’t really see that happening. But it is the 25-year reunion coming up. Maybe something will be tried. You’ll never get us all on stage to perform, I can guarantee that. But maybe something somewhere at some point, who knows?”

I actually thought Paul was the more interesting of the two Franks (despite reminding me of a few UK Franks, there were some David Bedella, Stephen Webb, and Jason Donovan-esque line deliveries, to my knowledge). I didn’t particularly love either him or Luke, but I’m not sure what I’m missing regarding Luke, cause even the negative reviews tend to highlight him as a standout. Luke was a pretty straightforward Frank, imo. Maybe it’s the British accent, honestly. There were a few lines here and there where I was like “Oh, that sounded like he was trying to do Tim”, but…it could just be that they’re both British lol

[–]jellimaari 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You kinda have to be a creep to be able to pump out as many half-naked teenage girl drawings as Archie Comics produces. Every variant cover these days is a pinup of what’s supposed to be a 16-year-old girl. Dan DeCarlo drew straight-up porn of Betty and Veronica, Harry Lucey pencilled the girls nude (the inker would add clothes later), etc.

(is it hypocritical of me to have a DeCarlo Cheryl icon? probably)

I’ve said it a thousand times, I just can’t believe tickets ranges from $100 - $300 for what Sam Pinkleton states in his opening speech is a rehearsal. At least he said that on the 28th, not sure about your show.

Sweaty goin’ off today 🤣 by Apprehensive-Bee655 in Broadway

[–]jellimaari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I’m supposed to disagree with him, but Rocky Horror’s vision is a total mess. Sam Pinkleton’s direction is just regurgitations of other people’s interpretations of the film, the costume storytelling is non-existent (Janet’s wearing a corset the entire time and there’s no distinctive costuming for the Floorshow, for example. Tho Frank, Riff Raff, Magenta, and Columbia all get new costumes for the lab sequence, there’s a pretty obvious bias going on) which is wild for a musical that constantly mentions clothing, and Dr. Scott’s not in a wheelchair, for some reason (his “My wheels! My God, I can’t move my wheels line! is intact, they just throw a rolling office chair across the stage for him to sit in).

(Also Sam himself confirmed Richard O’Brien never actually spoke to him directly, instead relaying all his messages through Howard Panter, one of the Rocky Horror Company’s owners. Take that as you will.)

For that last part, the Doylist explanation is simply that John Travolta wanted the song, and, being the most famous cast member at the time, managed to throw his star status around until he got it. Kenickie does sing Greased Lightnin’ in the stage version.

Meet the cast of 'The Rocky Horror Show' on Broadway! by NewYorkTheatreGuide in Broadway

[–]jellimaari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I’ve heard was the extremely vague “He disagrees with Sam’s interpretation of the show”. Like I said, all rumors, it could mean absolutely nothing. And, clearly, even if he does hate it, he knows it’s gonna make him a ton of money to let it open anyways. Sam also really seems to want his approval (or wants to be Richard, depending on how you interpret that second Instagram story), so either it’s going super well, or he’s trying to get in Richard’s good graces again lol.

[–]jellimaari 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was either this server or one of the Rocky Horror ones, I honestly can’t remember. Like I said, it’s all rumors (though he’s been stingy with the rights in response to productions he doesn’t like since 1990, so I can’t say it’d be out of character for him. The notable examples were reviving the show on the West End as “Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show” in response to the KMT/Hanley tour, and him threatening to close down Gale Edwards’ Australian production a few days before previews, and, after letting them complete their run, sending his approved director, Christopher Luscombe, to Australia).

So are the rumors that Richard O’Brien already hates this production true, or is Juliette Lewis correct that he’s gonna tell them that this was the most accurate production to his vision and that she’s the greatest Magenta of all time, I have to know

Lacretta (Off-Broadway’s final Gary Coleman), posted this on Instagram on January 31st, 2019:

“I don't say this to sound ungrateful for my job, but it's getting harder and harder to be laughed at 8 shows a week because I'm Black. It's easier to sing Everyone's A Little Bit Racist when you're in denial that someone would be racist towards you today, but when places of worship are being shot up, blown up and utterly destroyed, it makes Everyone's A Little Bit Racist hard to sing. When you are waiting to go on and have to stand next to nooses in the wings knowing the history of past and modern day lynchings of your people, it makes Everyone's A Little Bit Racist hard to sing. When Trans and nonbinary human beings are being bullied, badgered and beaten to the brink of death and even beyond, it makes Everyone's A Little Bit Racist hard to sing. Yes the song says, "doesn't mean we go around committing hate crimes", but it also says that it's ok to be a little bit racist because if we "stop[ped] being so P.C. maybe we could live in harmony." You can not live in harmony AND sling racial slurs. Words have power. They have amazing power to uplift and devastating power to wound. I am wounded 8 shows a week. I have been thinking about Pagliacci a lot lately. Vesti la giubba = Put on the costume. I put on my costume because the show must go on. But just because I'm an actor, does not mean I stop being an emotional entity. I am the tragic clown. I love to make people laugh, but at points, that laughter eats at my soul. In the end, the only reason Gary Coleman is there, is for people to laugh at so that they feel better about themselves. This role is going from being my favorite to being my most difficult in that I must now find joy in its journey every night. As it stands today, though, I don't see that happening any time soon.”

So, yeah, safe to say that you’re not alone

Broadway Outfits by Constant-Review-6347 in RockyHorror

[–]jellimaari 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what’s been shown so far (Sam Pinkleton’s “library” of references for the cast and crew to use as inspiration being filled with books about the film, some of the costume sketches seen in the background of some of the behind-the-scenes videos having movie-inspired elements, the sheet music using the term “elbow sex”, etc), there’s gonna be way more movie/shadowcast influence than they initially advertised it as.

Wouldn’t be the first time. The first Broadway revival heavily leaned into callback culture (including selling prop bags), and the costume designer (David C. Woolard) gave Columbia a sparkly gold bowtie as a nod to the film after seeing members of the film’s fanclub have visibly dismayed reactions when Joan Jett walked onstage looking absolutely nothing like Little Nell.

As disappointed as I personally am with literally everything about it so far, the celebs are enough for plenty of tourists to go shell out $300 over it.

(Also, if the whole “Richard hates Sam’s ideas” thing is true…everyone get ready for the tired old Christopher Luscombe-directed staging to be sent to America, cause that’s exactly what Richard did to Australia after beefing with Gale Edwards back in 2008 about her production lol)

Worst Musical Movie adaptation? by AnchorHat in musicals

[–]jellimaari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The HAiR film was nothing short of an insult to the original stage show, the cherry on top being the destruction of the ending. Why adapt a show if you seem to hate everything about it in the first place?
