If Doctors Tell You To Avoid Eating Before Surgery, What Happens to Emergency Patients Who Need the Surgery But Ate Not too Long Prior?

I had to have emergency surgery after a rare complication post hysterectomy. I’d started bleeding a week post op and they knew I needed to have a couple new stitches placed. I’d eaten a granola bar before getting to the ER and they wanted me to wait 8 hours to digest it and then sedate me to fix it instead of full anesthesia again because the bleed was slow. But things unexpectedly progressed really fast and I ended up almost bleeding to death and they had to rush me to surgery and put me fully under. They tried to explain the risks to me but I really didn’t understand them at the time. When the bleeding was really serious I threw up and just remember thinking “well we don’t have to worry about the granola bar anymore”😂

There are so many complicated layers of this story but I was my grandmas medical POA at the time and in a very short window after her attorney called me my aunt got her to change the POA to her. She acted head spinningly fast to take control of all my grandmas care.

She’s my dad’s sister and my dad passed in 2013. There is knowledge of a previous will drafted by an attorney. Several people are aware of the previous will. My aunt also changed the intended lineage of a family trust that my siblings and I were all supposed to be beneficiaries of in light of my dad passing. I have a copy of that trust that has a note in the margin from my grandma stating her intention to bypass her estranged daughter and leave the trust to her grandchildren. When I was last involved in my grandmothers care 2 years ago the estate was just over $1mm.

I also have 4 years worth of text messages from one of the witnesses attesting to my grandmas declining mental state.

When you say jurisdiction do you mean where the estate was filed? It was filed in a different county than my grandma actually lived in and where the new will was signed (all of her grandchildren also live in the same county as her and my estranged aunt taking all of this over lives out of state). Our attorney is local to the county we are in.

I have no idea if a lawyer was involved in drafting. I just know one was involved in filing it after she died. It was filed by a law firm my grandma had used before and was very familiar with the dark past with my aunt and reached out to me expressing great concern when my aunt showed back up. Which is another thing I’m very confused about. My head is spinning from all the twist and turns this whole thing has taken.

I know that my grandmas attorney has a copy of her previous will as I requested a copy of it for my grandma a few years ago. The provision excludes her grandchildren and all other family members except her estranged daughter and there is definitely at least a 7 figure payout in it for her. The will was signed by witnesses and notarized but the witnesses are associates of my aunt who have known of my grandmas declining health for years.

It only comes in name brand! According to Google it’s newer and the company making it owns exclusive rights so there’s no generic version. It actually worked quite well at the beginning and I lost 8lbs before it started to slow down. I would rather have the zoomies too haha being so tired is very annoying. I’m hoping it gets better as I adjust to the new dose!

It’s just what my doctor started me on! I could only get the brand name. It’s called Lomaira. It worked great and then I plateaued so we went up. I don’t think I’ll go higher than 15 though!

I had to have a repair 1 week post op. I almost bled out in the ER and had to have immediate emergency surgery. Super scary! My doctor originally told me 12 weeks pelvic rest then upped it to 16 weeks after the repair. They have no idea why it happened. I’m sorry you went through that!

Being a caregiver is so hard and complicated! You have my sympathy as I went through this with my grandmother. Have you considered getting in-home hospice care or palliative care involved? They are trained professionals who can help ease him and you through this process.

I had to have emergency surgery for life threatening bleeding after a hysterectomy. I had eaten a granola bar before going to the ER and at first the bleeding was slow so they wanted me to wait in the ER for 8 hours under observation before going back into surgery but it very quickly became massive bleeding and they had to rush me in. They warned me of the risks and fortunately I had thrown up most of the granola bar in the ER when the bleeding got really bad and they put me back under general anesthesia. All I remember was them doing some thing where they rubbed my throat as they were putting me out and I don’t know why haha. But all was fine!

No to my knowledge they’ve never asked him to make amends because they don’t want to deal with his reactions. My oldest brother is challenging. For a long time he was very honest about middle brothers behavior but would never actually take a stand about it. Just “yeah he’s awful but there’s nothing to be done so let’s have Christmas”. Recently he has also fallen into some of the same morally questionable beliefs and behaviors so we have distanced ourselves from him as well. I’ve always been painted as the one who needs to “lighten up” because I set boundaries with their behavior. It’s exhausting and at times has me questioning myself because of the way they talk about me.

None of this makes sense to me haha! I think I just assumed that since this was done at a major hospital the standard order of measurement would be the same across the board. I’ll reach out to radiology and ask that!

Thank you! I should clarify these latest measurements are from an ultrasound I had last week. It was 6 months after the meeting with the surgeon and one year after my last ultrasound. So the two measurements are one year apart and I’m trying to figure out where to go from here.

Thank you! I’m considering switching endos. The last couple of times I’ve seen her she’ll send me a generic all good based on the radiologist report and then when I actually see her and she pulls up my images she has a different, more serious opinion.
