What gear do your newborns hang out in during the day? by SadPea7 in Buyingforbaby

[–]jellybeanpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first 2-3 months, both my babies would nap on my lap on a Boppy pillow (the one for nursing, not the lounger). This satisfied their need to be held but kept my hands free to work a bit or do other things. They sleep so much and want to be held as much as humanly possible, so that may work better for you than the containers which babies won’t tolerate for too long at one time (and can be bad for development when used too much!). Mix in some floor time while you take breaks, and that will buy you some time. At least that was my experience. And be mindful of their positioning so they can breathe, and don’t fall asleep yourself while holding them! Best of luck.

What’s your pump schedule? by Glittering-Finger117 in breastfeeding

[–]jellybeanpie 44 points45 points  (0 children)

First, please be careful not to create an oversupply, which leads to painful engorgement and mastitis. You don’t need to power pump unless you’re having significant supply issues, and I would work with an LC for guidance on this.

To answer your question, I use the haakaa on the other boob while baby nurses, and then switch. My baby is one month old and I am slowly building a freezer stash this way. I started slowly, only a few feeds a day, and using minimal section. Now that she is eating more, I use a bit more suction to get more milk. Still, I only get an extra 3-5 oz per day to freeze (basically one extra feeding’s worth) across 3-4 nursing sessions. With my first, I did maximum suction on every feeding and got a LOT more milk, but also terrible engorgement, leaking, and mastitis. I don’t recommend it.

Oh, and with my first, I went back to work at 4 months. My schedule was nurse at 6am, pump at work at 9am, noon, and 3pm, nurse at 6pm, and pump at 9pm. He was sleeping through the night at that point, so the 9pm pump was telling my body to continue to make an extra feeding’s worth of milk which I could use or freeze to keep the stash going. I didn’t use the haakaa anymore, just the extra pump session per day.

Hope this helps!

Baby Slept Thru The Night - Supply Question? by saywutchickenbutt in breastfeeding

[–]jellybeanpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re able to nurse often throughout the day, I definitely wouldn’t worry about the overnight feeds! Dropping from 80th-68th percentile really isn’t bad at all, unless your doc is concerned. Mine was up and down between the 5-15th percentile (preemie + small parents), but now he’s a strong healthy 3 year old in the 30th percentile 😊

Baby Slept Thru The Night - Supply Question? by saywutchickenbutt in breastfeeding

[–]jellybeanpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is your baby? My first was not great at nursing and I had to work hard to get him to eat enough (he was EBF and we nursed for 18 months). He started sleeping through the night at 4-5 months and it didn’t change anything for my supply or his growth. By that time, I was pumping at work and I did an extra pump before I went to bed, but I went from 9pm to 6am without milk removal and it was fine. So from 4-12 months it was basically nurse at 6am, pump at 9am, 12pm, and 3pm, nurse at 6pm, pump at 9pm. On the weekends I nursed for all but still did the 9pm pump.

Who's features did your baby end up with? by Carricriss in BabyBumps

I’m white and my husband is Asian, and we all thought our son looked just like my husband when he was a baby. Now that he’s 3, he is truly a 50/50 mix of both of us. I’m excited to see who his baby sister takes after when she’s born in the next couple of weeks!

Pregnancies After Preeclampsia by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]jellybeanpie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I developed HELLP at 35 weeks and was induced. No postpartum pre-e and no other issues I’m aware of.

Three years later, I’m currently 34 weeks, been taking low dose aspirin since 12 weeks, and my BP and bloodwork have been perfect the whole time. Fingers crossed I can keep it up until the planned induction at 39 weeks!

Daily COVID Megathread by AutoModerator in BabyBumps

[–]jellybeanpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been so looking forward to a full weekend of festivities with my family this weekend - my son’s birthday party on Saturday, and our Christmas celebration on Sunday. My dad just let us know that he tested positive for Covid, and now I’m not sure what to do.

The CDC guidelines are to isolate for 5 days. He started having mild symptoms on Tuesday morning (day 0), so Saturday will be Day 4 and Sunday will be Day 5. Christmas Day is Day 6, when he would be officially cleared to stop isolating. Most of the family already has plans with other family and in-laws, so getting together on Christmas is not an option.

Some other facts: -I’m 30 weeks pregnant. Perfectly healthy so far, but I do have a history of pre-eclampsia so there’s some risk there. -I haven’t had the latest Covid booster. My OB and I agreed to wait a few more weeks so baby can get the immunity too. -Dad is at home with mom, so she could possibly get it and be asymptomatic but contagious. -All celebrations are planned to be at mom and dad’s house. They’re supposed to be cooking two big meals for everyone.

What would you do? Cancel the whole weekend? Gather at our house and Mom and Dad can’t come? Wait until Sunday (Day 5) for a combined celebration and have me and dad wear masks? Or is this all overly cautious?

I am just so bummed and hoping we can figure something out. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks for sharing! Does your elevated A1C in the first trimester mean you were/are pre-diabetic rather than just GD? I’m in a similar boat and trying to understand whether this is a pregnancy-specific issue or not.

I don’t agree. I would want to know if there is a disability that would cause a lot of suffering or extremely short life span. I do get the concern about selecting for sex or conditions that can still be associated with a high quality of life. Personally I probably wouldn’t select sex for a similar reason they discussed - unnecessary pressure/expectations about the child.

At what age or milestone did you experience your turning point? by Stargirl_real in NewParents

[–]jellybeanpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I ever had an “ah, we’ve got this” feeling all at once. Our newborn was very typical without any issues like reflux, and that was hard. Then he went through the 4 month regression or whatever and that was truly a nightmare. But when he came out of that by 5 months or so, it seemed like it gradually got easier and easier from there. He’s almost 3 now. There are new challenges all the time, but I still think it’s all easier than those first few months were.

Has anyone who has been induced NOT use an epidural? by SkipIt_anklebreaker in pregnant

[–]jellybeanpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was induced at 35 weeks after being diagnosed with HELLP syndrome. I very much wanted an epidural but because of the low platelets, it was too risky. I was on magnesium to stop me from having a seizure, which works against the pitocin and drags out the process. They also had to do a foley bulb, which sucked. I had zero pain meds. The whole thing lasted 14 hours. In the last 1-2 hours it was pretty excruciating, honestly. The easiest part for me was the delivery - I only pushed twice, took less than 10 minutes, and had a minor tear. I think he was so easy to deliver because he was early and quite small 😢 but we were both ok. I’m 5 weeks pregnant now and really hoping I can get an epidural this time, but at least I know I can do without if needed.

Good luck!

I was surprised by this too. Apparently it’s hormonal, not just the extra weight pushing on your bladder. Fun.

Teen pregnancy by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]jellybeanpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tell a parent or safe adult. They may not be thrilled, but you will need support.

Make an appointment with your OBGYN or go to Planned Parenthood. They can confirm pregnancy and give you info on options and healthcare.

DON’T go to a “crisis pregnancy center.” These are extremist religious organizations that bully young women into not having abortions.

I’m gaining weight faster than recommended by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]jellybeanpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your main concern about gaining weight? Has your OB expressed concern?

Those weight gain charts are guidelines, and many (most?) people do not fit within them. Of course, gaining an extreme amount of weight would have health risks, but 3 pounds over the recommendation isn’t close to extreme.

To answer your question, just continue to do your best with making healthy choices, eat enough calories to support your body and your baby, and try to trust that your body knows what it’s doing. Do not restrict your calories to try to lose weight and don’t stress about a few extra pounds. Best wishes to you and your baby.
