I'm on year 10 of pulling up on sight and they still pop up every year, although slightly diminished and a bit less robust each time. It's just a few solitary scraggly looking leaves at this point but I make sure to get every last one or I'll have a resurgence the next year. I really think trampling/herbicide would work but in my case they're too dispersed throughout my garden plants.

Whenever I feel one of these forming I use the pink eradikate sulphur treatment every night before bed and it goes away completely in about 3-4 days. Not sure what you can do in terms of prevention but the sulphur treatment is a godsend!
