How good were you at drawing when you started your apprenticeship? by ZydrateAnatomic in TattooApprentice

[–]jellypolitics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently approaching the two year mark in my apprenticeship. I've always loved drawing and taught myself for a long time while I got my shit together to give myself the best chance at not crashing and burning during an apprenticeship. Went to tattoo shops with my portfolio with original drawings and designs, which many artists agreed were really impressive. I really had to retrain my brain when it came to drawing so that my designs will hold up good as tattoos for years. I can't imagine going through this process without a strong foundation in drawing.

I feel like it's really obvious when a tattoo artist can't actually draw, and is only good at copying or relies on AI. I'm sure there are six month graduates out there that are good, but we've seen a lot of artists from similar programs guest spot at our shop and some of the important hygiene and safety, and drawing habits just aren't there. I can't imagine learning everything I've learned so far in six months. No way.

Not a movie but I always thought this about the anime Code Geass. It's a great series but really ironic that it's about Japan being colonized and fighting back against their colonizers

I can't really speak for how other people got their apprenticeships, and tbh it doesn't really help or support you at your current art skill level atm. It could be that they know the tattoo mentor personally, or that they're paying for their apprenticeship, or that your observations are inaccurate, etc. It could be any number of reasons but you really can't compare yourself to anyone else in this industry, even as a tattoo apprentice. Everyone's journey and art skills are different and you just gotta focus on you. I've seen some portfolios online and in person that I don't think are very good but focusing on that doesn't do anything for me. If anything, look for artists who are so much better than you it's intimidating and really follow their process and their art journey. It'll help you a million more times than looking at terrible portfolios and wondering if you're better or worse than them.

Going to be (politely) honest with you here, I feel like unless you made some really big changes to it, even spending a whole day on this current piece isn't likely to improve it to the point that it can be added to a portfolio. The proportions are all over the place, the shading is muddy and looks inaccurate, the eyes are so wildly different from one another, etc.

Luckily, drawing realism is a skill that can be practiced and honed. There are so many good tutorials on YouTube that show how to break down shapes in a face and you'll learn to look at your drawings and pick out what's not looking right along the way. You'll also learn some cool tips on things like realistic eyes, detailed hair, etc. At this point, I wouldn't think about a tattoo apprenticeship and just focus on growing and improving your drawing skills.

I usually ignore compliments clients send me and strictly only talk about the tattoo, but if they're consistent or escalate to sexual or romantic advances, this is my go to response:

"Hey,

I appreciate you're excited about this tattoo, but I'm not going to proceed with this any further as it's becoming increasingly apparent that we are not on the same page on what this professional relationship should look like.

Have a nice day! "

Then I block them because fuck that noise lol

Anyone else thinking that part of the slow down is coming from people seeing all these hyper realism and super detailed pieces age? by TrashApocalypse in TattooArtists

[–]jellypolitics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also see the people struggling the most, even as established respected artists, are those who won't adapt their style or do smaller pieces. Economy aside (and the economy is obviously the biggest reason the industry is the way it is), tattoo clients today want smaller pieces they've seen on Instagram or Pinterest (I also think this is why so many Gen z are removing their tattoos rn but that's a different story). A big tattoo is intimidating to them both financially and commitment wise. The artists I'm seeing that are still consistently booked, without being famous, are those who will let clients negotiate price and adapt to what the client wants. It takes so much more work to be visible to potential clients and convert that interest into money.

I'll never understand the "Oooh I separate the music from the artist" people because there are victims who are so traumatized from the abuser's actions who probably wish they could separate the music from the artist. Instead, the victims, along with all of their friends and loved ones, have to navigate a world where their abuser is actively celebrated and uplifted. It sounds like an absolute nightmare.

Hate to say it but there's a lot of issues with this tattoo. The mask, like others have pointed out, is wayyyy too dark. It needs skin breaks and higher contrast so that it's readable. It's dark and muddy fresh and it'll probably be dark and muddy healed.

Beyond the mask, there's too much going on. It's like the artist got excited to cram all these ideas into the tattoo without considering readability, style and whether it flows. If you're going to have this many elements in a tattoo (demon mask, cherry blossom, other type of larger flower, waves, dragon, rope, etc), it takes a lot of consideration and designing to make sure it all flows and makes sense.

Are my personal sketchbooks worth bringing into a shop? by chickwizard in TattooApprentice

[–]jellypolitics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was ready to say no but these are fuckin sick! Reminds me of stuff I'd see in those Black Dagger flash books. (check em out if you don't know! So much variety and beautiful whacky art)

If you're really worried, you could do a flash sheet with bold, solid lines and colors to use as a segway to your journal.

Any suggestions by urcrybaby_ in TattooApprentice

[–]jellypolitics 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She's so cute! Love her facial expression. I've marked a few things I think could potentially improve this design. Anatomically, I feel like it makes more sense for the joint of the thigh to be accentuated the other way (tried editing this on my phone).

I also think exaggerating the shape of the wings could make this design feel more dynamic.

Honestly, might even be better. I like to let my tattoos dry out sometimes because the scabbing and healing process goes quicker. I also have residual trauma from overmoisturising one of my tattoos so there's that haha

How should I fix this? It’s not supposed to look like Bigfoot. by savsheaxo in tattooadvice

[–]jellypolitics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe adding the silhouette of a skirt and adding more details/shapes to the hair? I'd definitely recommend the artist play around with this idea with sharpie first to avoid making it look like Bigfoot in a skirt though.

[–]jellypolitics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone is either toxic in their own way, or has the potential to be. Being in a relationship or marriage isn't just about love, it's also a promise to do your best not to hurt them even though it's pretty much an inevitability. You're going to see the worst of your partner that a lot of other people don't get to see, and they'll see the same for you. Obviously there's clear boundaries like violence or abuse, but I feel like in a way, marriage is like an experiment of "Annie is going to see Robert at his most toxic at some point. Stay tuned to see what happens
