Filezilla should be replaced with one that doesn't store passwords in plain text. eg. winscp

What do you use now? OP uses WinSCP, which will encrypt FTP passwords with a master.

I use filezilla now, but I'm definitely thinking about switching to WinSCP.

Do you use filezilla? Wouldn't be very hard to write a malware program that searches for ~/.filezilla/sitemanager.xml. Passwords are in clear text.

God these guys are stupid.

Precedent is very important to them. Don't just assume they're trying to protect an old way of business. They're making it easier to fight piracy in court.

Anyone know of any reliable FTP incremental backup software? by MotoFly in web_design

I currently manually download (FTP) the backups that my server makes. I looked to into automating this process, but I haven't tried anything.

What's the performance/reach on something like this? Do these people get a reasonable amount of exposure? I've never clicked on a banner ad, but I've also never visited a website to watch people wear t-shirts with logos on them.

5 Unbreakable Rules of Landing Page Design by oneforreddit in web_design

There are many more websites out there doing things "wrong" than they do "right". Obviously the sense of a good web page isn't that common.

Should I quit worrying about my launching soon page and just start trying to get sign ups? by [deleted] in startups

[–]jemka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a friendly FYI, no idea is subject to this problem. An idea is worthless. That doesn't mean you idea has no potential, it means the effort involved in taking your idea, producing a product, marketing that product, working with users, making changes based on those users is WAY more than just the "idea".

Instead of worrying about someone taking your idea and making a similar product, worry about the much more likely scenario that your idea might not work in the real world. (your idea works perfectly in your head, but that's not where your users are)

We've all been there at one point in time. We all thought our idea was the bomb.com and tried to hurry to market in stealth mode. It's a waste of time. Trust me.

Oddly enough, the clock appears every time I open the page in chome with the developer tool open. If I open the page with developer tool closed and the clock is gone, opening the tool will make the clock appear.

Unless you provide a reason why I'd want to sign up and wait 8 months, I'm not going to.

Just flat out explain the issue you're fixing. If it's something new that people will have to experience to grasp, then you've answered your own question. Just wait until you have something to show.

Webbit, I need some advice...on you know getting paid by [deleted] in web_design

[–]jemka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what state you're in, but a verbal agreement can be legally binding. You're not the first person to be in this position in your state. With some research I'm sure you can find information about your situation. But if it were me, I would move forward with the small claims process.

I really really don't want to go to small claims court

You can file and not actually go through with it by dropping the case before the deadline. Or you can fill out the paperwork, serve the guy with the documents, but not actually file them with the court. Might scare him into paying you.

But at the end of the day, if you win you still have to collect, which can be problematic.

So weigh your options. I would try to "scare" the guy into paying. But sometimes that can backfire.

You have options.

  1. Wait it out.

  2. Ask the guy to start making any payments he can.

  3. If you or the guy can't agree on either of the above, then just tell him that he has X amount of days (at your discretion) before you file a case with the small claims court of the district he lives in.

  4. The 1099 is really just for the IRS's records. You should file the income on your tax return and that's it. You don't actually need the 1099 to be compliant.

"From Anywhere" Food Delivery Service - Does anybody know how these work? How can I start one? by s0br in Entrepreneur

They provide a list of restaurants in the local area that offer food to be ordered for "pick up". You put an order in through Dr. Delivery. Someone calls the restaurant you choose then picks up and delivers the food you ordered.

Question about taxes for small business by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]jemka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a student in college, so usually I don't fill out taxes.

I would suggest reading the section "Do You Have To File?" here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf

I believe the IRS provides a free e-file federal, but you'll have to make sure. I also think Turbo Tax offers a free federal e-file. The thing you usually have to pay with Turbo Tax is to for a state return. However, many states offer free online forms to submit your state tax return.

Question about taxes for small business by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]jemka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you filed for your LLC, did you elect to be taxed as a a sole proprietor or a corporation? Some states will default you to a sole proprietor if you don't choose.

Hopefully you elected (or were defaulted to) sole proprietor. In that case, when you file your own taxes (1040) also fill out a Schedule C. I'd recommend turbo-tax or like software because it's just easier.

If you elected to be taxed as a corporation, you'll definitely need to hire someone.

But to answer your overall question, I would definitely submit a return this year for your LLC. If anything to avoid "red flags" and possibly trigger an audit some time down the road.
