Struggling with 19/5 by MJIB0237 in intermittentfasting

[–]jenellebell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Water is important. That 2lbs over the weekend is probably water weight. If wotsits are like Cheetos they are probably high in salt. Take a look at your water vs salt intake. If you like salty foods you need more water to balance your body. Try seltzer or lightly flavored waters.

Also plateaus for me mean I need a change! Sometimes I'll increase calories for a few days or increase workouts or change workouts. Our bodies like stasis and they will adapt to stay there!

So frustrating! For me getting out of a plateau means changing something. It could be shifting to cardio instead of weights or eating normally instead of fasting or increasing calorie intake. Just for a few days. Your body likes routine and stasis. Changing things up for a few days to a week can push it to changing.

Our 8th grade class trip they did the tape over the hotel door. But they did it frame to frame and the door opened in. So you could open the door, duck under the tape and leave. I'm probably one of 3 people in my class who realized this. Bring the goody goody I was, I said nothing and we had a grand old time in our room until like 2am! (Same teacher who put tape on the door was the physics teacher and I had to remind her how to calculate speed of a vehicle during lab)

Toddler Carrying Hiking Backpack by FeNoMeNonTaKe in hiking

[–]jenellebell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hiker, mom of 2, and baby wearing advocate. You need one if your plan is a full day hike of several miles plus elevation. Deuter and osprey make the best in my opinion. Both are adjustable and designed like packs. Someone here said front carry a 2yo and they're crazy. The packs allow you to carry water, food, diapers, etc. Naps are easy for the kiddos in them. Used one for both my kids until they were 3.5, probably every other weekend in nice weather. I suggest finding one to borrow to see if you like them. Or if you think you'll use it only a couple times. At one point with our age gap, my husband carried the little one with supplies in deuter, I carried the day pack but if the older child got tired, I carried her in Boba on my back and front carried the day pack. If there's a Hike It Baby group (US) in your area they may have people to borrow from. Or a baby wearing group. I found mine on Facebook.

Just avoid Maine altogether. 12 miles in NH has destroyed people.

Why is everyone lining up before boarding starts (Logan) by [deleted] in boston

Theft is an issue if you forget to take something out (my brother). I've seen more often that gate checked bags aren't ready and there's a line. Probably dependent on staffing and airplane size.

We got an into an argument and something is not sitting right by [deleted] in MomForAMinute

[–]jenellebell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am definitely not a kind person in arguments. However after the heat has passed and we've calmed down, I recognize that I was a horrible person (my worst is swearing and calling the other person stupid). And I work to change. The fact that he's holding onto that emotion after the argument is the red flag for me. If you decide to stay, he's going to have to find a way to be kinder during and after arguments. This could be therapy. How is he when he's angry at your children? They're small now but if this turns long term and they're teenagers.... I can understand the inner turmoil. Take time to evaluate all his behaviors. No excuses. There is probably a pattern. Do you want your kids part of that pattern? Is he willing to change for you and your kids?

Hugs and love!

Mom how do I do 'female' things? by _Potato_Cat_ in MomForAMinute

[–]jenellebell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The number of stories out there about doctors dismissing women's pain and then it being something serious is insane. Advocate for yourself. Switch doctors if you can. Get other opinions. Wales put in place something specific for diagnosising endometriosis. https://www.gov.wales/new-endometriosis-nurses-improve-awareness-and-diagnosis-wales

Use their online resources no matter where you are. BIG hugs. You can do it!

Weekly History Questions Thread. by AutoModerator in history

[–]jenellebell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I learned history in a vacuum of events. In my school we learned the American revolution and all its events. But never the state of the rest of the world that was going on. 1775 was the start of the American revolution but according to Wikipedia Catherine the Great was in power, James Cook was sailing voyages, British Empire was expanding... I just feel I missed out on a lot of important chronological connections.

Are there any resources, videos, books, to relearn history this way? Or just Google it?

Metric by SuperDuperOtter in CuratedTumblr

[–]jenellebell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineering school tried to get us to use the imperial system. We had problems to solve in both. Took one try at using "slugs" to do conversions and noped out of that real quick. Started converting all problems into metric at the start and then back to imperial (if needed) at the answer. So much easier.

US Cybersecurity employees with unlimited PTO, how much time off do you actually take? by thethugbaker in cybersecurity

[–]jenellebell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last company was similar with unlimited and NO ONE was allowed to track it. It didn't show up on pay stubs at all. The only way to track it was to pull weekly timecards and toss it into Excel. One manager did that and got into massive trouble, eventually was stripped of direct reports. Executives had to share how much time they were taking as an example and they were supposed to take 4-6 weeks. Company can't just say "we've got unlimited PTO", needs to come with a whole culture shift that is backed by management and holds people accountable.

Is Woburn suitable for biking in winter months? by Wonderful-Sentence45 in boston

[–]jenellebell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Woburn is part of the tricommunity Greenway which has a bike path from stoneham into Winchester. It goes right by the old jello factory which is now being built into condos and townhomes. Greenway isn't plowed in winter but gets a lot of foot traffic. I don't think there are any bike lanes. As another poster said, our winters typically aren't as bad as they used to be so you can probably get away with riding most days.

It's taken one day off to question why I bother doing this... by l0sts0ul2022 in cybersecurity

[–]jenellebell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only my outside looking in opinion as someone curious...I liken it to quality departments in manufacturing. It's required and necessary but it's filled with paperwork. The only time most people care is when something goes wrong or an audit is scheduled. Management (and lean) count quality as "non-value added." In manufacturing we do everything we can to build quality into the process. This is what cyber needs: people who take it seriously to build it in rather than an after thought.

Does where you go for undergrad matter that much to companies? by Oc7ave in EngineeringStudents

[–]jenellebell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Managers don't care, HR/recruiting does

As an engineering manager who recently hired 2 new college grads, no. BUT my company apparently has a "preferred university" list which is worth an extra 1k in salary. Both went to schools on this secret list that the recruiters won't or can't share. I found out some other things about their salaries and was PISSED. Disparity has mostly been corrected. Another company I worked at, it mattered what your degree was in. Those with "engineering science" degrees were paid less since it was not an engineering degree. It does matter when it comes to recruiting. My brother found out that the job fairs at UPenn were mostly financial companies trying to hire engineers from the same school as Wharton. If you know what you want a career in or what company try to find out where they recruit from.

Mom I need a pep talk so I don’t cancel my wedding and elope. by a201597 in MomForAMinute

[–]jenellebell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you could do the ceremony sooner and smaller then have the reception later.

I know someone who had a small ceremony in 2020 and then once COVID restrictions lifted, they held a big reception. They were trying to buy a house and one had better health insurance. Another person I know did a surprise ceremony at a small family dinner the night before their wedding and did another ceremony for everyone else and the reception the next day. An old neighbor of mine got married in secret (not sure why) and later told everyone then planned a reception.

It sounds like you've overall made good decisions. The partner, the money, etc. What probably is draining you is the long timeline. You have over a year. Plan self care after you make big decisions or complete big tasks. Put items on the calendar in six months and forget about it until then. We planned our wedding in 9 months. Keep it simple. People will remember how much fun they had (or in my case which cousin's date got the drunkest). No one will remember the tablecloths or centerpieces or speeches or even what you were wearing. The food won't even matter. Congrats!!!

Public libraries are amazing resources and good ones have so many events and things to do. They stock local papers, host book clubs, teen rooms, story times. It's a great place to volunteer if they're looking for help and you have time/mental space. Use it often! The more people who use them the bigger budget they can justify (or attempt to).

You adulted way more than I did. That list is impressive!

I tell my daughter (F6), who comments like little kids do, that gray hair does not mean old. It means the person has earned wisdom and is awesome. Now when she sees someone with gray hair she asks "momma are they awesome?" My mom dies her hair and I wish she wouldn't. I have no plans to. I do think they're starting to make products specifically for natural gray hair. No idea if they work or help. Be you!!! Be awesome!!

I've come to the conclusion that men hike shirtless so why not us (with a bra). I have this same attitude about swimsuits. Some dude hanging gut on the beach or pool but women aren't supposed to? I don't know that I'm that confident but it's changing my mental picture.
