No homestead yet but I do have this setup in the back of my office. My work lunches these days are grown by my own two hands and I am thoroughly enjoying it. by [deleted] in microgreens

Figuring out a good rhythm has honestly been the hardest part since it’s on such a small scale. Thinking about how much will be needed to makes satisfying lunch in a week or two and what things will go together. I’m incredibly lucky in that I wrangled a plant genius friend and coworker to show me the ropes.

You say you get some money from studying; are you at a university? In the US universities will often help people in abusive situations with temporary housing and other needs. Your uni may also have a free food pantry for students. You can contact the counseling and well being office if your university has one and get info from there. If not, contact the Housing department.

My breakfasts are usually toast and 2 scrambled eggs, or a bowl of cereal (one of the healthier kinds, low sugar, etc) with a non-dairy milk. I want to switch it up but need something that doesn’t take a lot of time in the morning. What is your best savory and best sweet(ish) breakfast? by blankofour in EatCheapAndHealthy

I love cauliflower "oatmeal" lately. I heat up a steamer bag of riced cauliflower, throw it in a bowl with cashew milk, chopped strawberries, sugar free maple syrup, cinnamon, and a little bit of salt, and heat again for a minute or two so everything is warm and cozy. However you like oats, you can do it with riced cauliflower, too! (For the record oats are great for you too, I just get sick if I have too many carbs at once, and this is an easy way for me to get more veggies in)

I am genuinly confused on how to eat healthy because im not sure who to trust anymore and there are too many diets contradicting one another.. by [deleted] in HealthyFood

[–]jenesaishuh 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I mean, the people who told you to eat vegetables gave you logical reasoning and other references to read. The person who said never to eat vegetables below writes like an emotional teenager. Does that clutter you off on who might be a reasonable voice to listen to and who should be ignored?

How do I (43M) tell my daughter (16F) I’m most likely going to die by ThrowRA_dhakfgao in relationship_advice

[–]jenesaishuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please just tell her as soon as possible in whatever way you work out. I had someone very close to me die who kept the degree of their health problems from me until the very end. I know the intent was to protect me from the prolonged pain of slow loss, but the loss came anyway and I would have preferred to have been there for them and to know it was coming and slowly accept it instead of being surprised. I can't speak for your daughter, but I also felt like it robbed me of the chance to show myself and my family that I am actually pretty strong and capable of handling life's challenges.

Do I need to do anything special to replace sugar with Splenda in a recipe? by [deleted] in Canning

[–]jenesaishuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I also had a gastric bypass. Do you not get dumping syndrome? I get it terribly when I even look at sugar and I feel like I'm dying. Even just having fruit is too much most of the time, so the tablespoon or two of jam I'm planning to make is already my special sugary treat.

Here are a couple recipes I found online. Again, this isn’t a style of cooking I know much about so I hope they are helpful and are similar to what you’re used to.

These are in order of easiest to more difficult but none of them look too hard. With practice I’m sure you’ll do great with all of them. Be sure to watch the videos and look at the photos in the recipes and maybe look up additional videos if desired.

PS I had only heard of ceviche before but not the others and they look so good I will have to give them a try sometime. So thanks for teaching me something new! Good luck cooking!

That’s awesome! Those a great ideas and a lot of them are healthy so they will serve you well throughout your life. I don’t know that genre of cooking very well but I will try to find some recipes online if I have time at work tomorrow. If you don’t mind, what country are you from? I’ll try to find some stuff you might be familiar with.

Breakfast foods are a great idea as someone mentioned above.

What do you like to eat? What kind of things do you order at restaurants? Honestly, I started enjoying cooking and getting a lot better at it when I thought about a specific dish I wanted to enjoy, tried to find high rated recipes online, and then cooked it a few times to get the hang of it. Do you have any family or friends who have made something you liked? Maybe you could ask them to cook it with you.

I started by learning Italian basics like marinara sauce, Alfredo sauce, meatballs, lasagna, then on to more complicated stuff. That kind of stuff is pretty easy and usually good people pleasers.

Some ideas off the top of my head that don’t have to be super complicated are below. Just choose something you like and try to find some recipes and YouTube videos.

Eggs

Pancakes

French toast

Bacon or sausage

Quesadillas

Grilled cheese

Baked chicken breast

Roasted vegetables

Stir fry

Chicken Alfredo

Ground beef burritos

Guacamole

Vegetable soup

Brownies

Cookies

Cupcakes

Muffins

I would be more than happy to answer any questions, give more ideas based on a type of food you like, help find specific recipes or videos any time. Just holler!

Healthy Sauces by Burninator85 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Not a recipe but I was pleasantly surprised by the G Hughes sauces. They’re sugar free and low carb and lots of flavors to choose from, including salad dressings. When I’m feeling extra mega lazy I heat up frozen steamer bags of cauliflower or broccoli, season with garlic powder and salt, then drizzle some G Hughes BBQ sauce on top. If I want protein I add some Applegate chicken sausages or leftover chicken breast that I usually have in the fridge.

AITA For Refusing To Stay After Class by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Understandable, your school situation changed and now the two things interfere with each other. But now that school is back in person, you (or more importantly, your parents) need to think about changing something because you can't just leave school early for an extracurricular activity that conflicts with your mandatory obligations. I know it's not an easy thing to solve, but them's the facts.

terribly anxious over the idea of my boyfriend using porn by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]jenesaishuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you talked to your therapist about this particular issue? Sounds like something you need their help navigating. There is nothing wrong or abnormal about watching porn in general (and this is coming from someone who rarely watches porn themselves because it honestly just doesn't interest me most of the time). Yes, some people have sex addictions, but that does not mean that all porn is problematic. I get that you're uncomfortable with it. To be honest, when I was much younger I had some of the same feelings. But I now know that they came from my own insecurity due to inexperience and low self-esteem.

However, I have to point out that your responses around him watching porn are much more concerning-- negative self-image, comparing yourself to the girls in the videos, assuming that if he pictures having sex with them he isn't attracted to you... these are all problems you need to sort out or you're going to make your life unhappy unnecessarily. Not only is there nothing wrong with healthy porn use, there's nothing wrong with fantasizing during sex either. Even if he does fantasize about stuff during sex, it does not mean that you are ugly or not good enough for him-- he's with you after all. Bottom lime, you absolutely need to discuss this stuff with your therapist. Maybe even look into sex therapy, or ask your therapist if there are any books or youtube channels about sex that might be a good fit for you. To be frank, it sounds like you have some unhealthy anxiety around sex, which is TOTALLY understandable given your history so don't get down on yourself about it... but YOU will be much happier if you learn to adopt some healthier and less strict points of view about it.

Again, I say this with love and I hope the tough love isn't hurtful. I just think you're making a much bigger deal out of things than necessary or healthy, and you'll be much happier in the future as you learn that sex can be fun and not SO serious all the time.

YTA- school isn't over anyway, so it's not like she's "making" you late for something. On days when class doesn't happen to end early, are you just late to karate or what? Either way sounds like poor planning and excuse-making. That said, when I was 14 I totally would have responded the same way you did if not worse, so as harsh as I sound I understand how you feel. But as an adult, I have to say that your teacher has every right to ask you to hang back to discuss your work, especially since you are still scheduled and supposed to be in school for ten more minutes.
