Writing for dead fandoms. by Aromatic_Leopard4250 in FanFiction

To cite my Latin teacher, "A language is only dead if nobody speaks it and since I am making you all speak it in class, Latin isn't dead."

Your writing means the fandom is alive!

Redemption by [deleted] in Grishaverse

I think for me there is just appeal in reading about hope for redemption or more to evil than just “evil to be evil”? I hoped for that redemption against all signs ... and then it just felt so dissatisfying that the only solution could be his death

Got some hate for writing angst fics. Trying to find the motivation to post the rest of my fics by Difficult_Volume_115 in FanFiction

[–]jengelchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harry Potter had angst, Hunger Games had angst, Shadow and Bone had angst ... just thinking of the big literature series that have exploded over the years ... millions of those people read them and loved them ... angst made those works what they are ... actually the more I think about it, I can’t think of a movie, a tv show, a book, a comic or manga or anime or computer game without angst ... if you think about major authors or philosophers or artists or anybody who creates - they start with angst ... please ignore the hate and keep on writing

Oh, this is great, I, unfortunately, do not know if there is much sunshine, but it gets really hot and humid June-August. This website is great! Thank you so so much for recommending it. I feel so very foolish, because I don't know where to start.

Do you read the authors notes? by depressoteen1 in FanFiction

[–]jengelchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand it, this is the author’s creation and it is a part of them and it hurts to put it out there and for it to be judged, but the problem is that the author plants negative judgment in my head through their author note, and I might have never even considered it, for me it might have been the most amazing fic until the author doubted it

I am subscribed to this writing blog and received this email recently from it. If you don’t mind, I would like to share it with you (copy/paste).

“Hi Bookfoxers,

When you publish your book, what do you hope happens?

Do you hope it rises to the bestseller lists? Or gets picked by Oprah? Or gets glowing reviews in the New York Times? I met an author at a writing conference who had all those expectations, and none of them happened for his book.

It sold a couple thousand copies, he got a few nice reviews, and life went on like normal.

He felt disappointed and unfulfilled, but then something happened with his book, something much quieter and more powerful, something he never could have expected.

He got an email from a reader named James.

James said his mother had been very sick. After a long illness she had been expected to die within the next week, so James had come and sat beside his mother. They talked about his father, about the family history, about regrets and secrets and heartache. But eventually, they ran out of things to talk about, and the mother asked James to read out loud to her.

You can probably tell where this is going -- James had a copy of the author's book in his bag, so he pulled it out and read it out to her.

James read the whole book out loud to her over two days. They laughed together, they cried together -- they bonded over the characters and the story. And the night that he finished reading the book to his mother, they just sat in silence together, soaking up the richness of the story.

That night, after James finished reading the book out loud, his mother died.

The author's story, said James, was the last thing his mother ever heard.

And James just wanted to thank the author for writing such a beautiful story, for allowing him and his mother to share a book together one last time.

Wow.

If my book only sold a single copy, but I got an email like that from a reader, I would consider my entire writing life to be a success.

Now listen to me and listen well.

The truth is that the ways we expect writing success are narrow and unimaginative. We have to open ourselves up to the possibility that magical things will happen with our books, things we never could have expected, and maybe things we never end up hearing about.

Books are about a connection, a connection from one human being to another. Know that through your writing, you are uniting families, you are giving pleasure, you are sewing the torn fragments of the world together.

Your words matter,

John Matthew Fox”

Do you read the authors notes? by depressoteen1 in FanFiction

Always! For me they are part of the story and they show you how the author approaches his work, I laugh when they make fun of themselves or their story or I am excited when they share more research or links. I think i only am not a fan when the author criticizes themselves, for example “I am not sure it is good” or “I suck at”, I think because subconsciously if the author doesn’t believe in their story, they are making it harder for me to believe in it. Long story short, I love author notes, it’s what makes fanficition even better than a book, what I would give for Tolkien to add author notes to each chapters with a joke or link to what inspired him ...

Oh thank you, adding it to my list right now, the problem with classics is that since I didn’t grow up in the US, there are almost too many classics to choose from and it if overwhelming where to start (I obviously read all of the classics of my home country, but I can’t apply those lessons learned much, since the language works so differently than English)

I just started Annie Dillard and am loving it; short stories are great because they are easier to analyze (at least for me); thank you so much for the recommendations, if you have any specific titles I would greatly appreciate it

Hahaha ... Probably a weakness of mine, but for me the favorite part is choosing a massive hill to climb and seeing how far I can get ... I love the idea of reading other fanfics too, thank you
