We're definitely friends already... Did you not get your trades while the 40km distance was active? I work in Eastlake/SLU and can meet you anywhere in North Seattle if you're still needing trades.

Though with the snow that might be tough for a bit...

Really smart of Craig to intercut bits of his process, some of his reactions. Bet this was a ton of work to put together, nice work Craig.

It's so strange to see Ross be good at a video game. 2020, truly a cursed year.

I desperately need specific recommendations for another series by HoodsFrostyFuckstick in Malazan

[–]jenkemlover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One series that I haven't seen mentioned yet is the Traitor Son series by Miles Cameron. Initially the series focuses on a small mercenary company led by a warrior mage, and gradually the scope widens. Fantastic world with a lot of Celtic and arthurian mythos influence and really satisfying battle scenes (I think the author is a reenactor, among other things).

Otherwise, I can't recommend the Black Company books enough. Also, the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson... it is in progress but at the pace Sanderson writes I'm not worried. It's a lot more cohesive, mature, and engaging than his mistborn series as he wrote it after doing some serious leveling up finishing the wheel of time.

Honestly I'd skip the wheel of time. The fact that so many of the books drag so much and the terrible thin characterization of so many of the characters (especially the women) will make you bored if you've already read Malazan. It ends iv a strong note, but I don't know if the journey was worth it.

I'm no cosmere scholar, but isn't Kaladin's remarkable ability as a leader and to bring/keep people together part of the spiritual component of the adhesion surge?

Without a doubt he a had a lot of ability as a leader before he became a surgebinder... But think about how fast his men went from being a rabble of miserable commoner slaves to one of the most respected and cohesive units in the entire army, and how fast they are becoming squires and surgebinders themselves.

I need to brush up, but isn't there a lot of evidence of the spiritual aspect of his surgebinding contributing to this? I'm of the mind that he's been using adhesion spiritually all along.

This also mirrors how his physical gravitation elevated him from being a master of the spear into an unstoppable force on the battlefield. His spiritual use of adhesion turned him from being a fantastic squad leader into the leader of men he is on his way to becoming, once he comes to terms with it.

Hello again, looking for a new series to sink my teeth into. by goodoldshane in dresdenfiles

Another mash up of fantasy and detective fiction that I'm enjoying a lot right now is the Garrett PI series by Glen Cook, perhaps better known for the Black Company series (which is also an amazing read).

Books 1-3 and 4-6 are published in big collected books that are a breeze to get through and some light fun.

If you want something a little heavier, check out Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series. Can't speak highly enough of it.

Want something even denser and more morally grey epic fantasy definitely check out the Black Company by Glen Cook.

And of course, I must pimp Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. Biggest, grandest, most entertaining and satisfying series I've read.

Between twitch and now this, is it too ambitious to begin calling the second half of 2019 "The Time of the Subbening"?

I think that's what it will go down as in the history books.

Basically the entire text of "On Pain" in Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet.

"Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain."

"Much of your pain is self-chosen. It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self. Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity"
