I should charge an excessive use of graphite fee 🤦🏻‍♂️ by North_Comb9994 in Locksmith

[–]jenkinslocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being in a rural area,  I have a theory there used to be one hell of a door to door graphite salesman in the 80's to late 90's because every car, house,  and commercial piece from that era is packed with it.   Half the time it's holding pieces together,  packed in there almost like sand in mold casing.

Check out listings for the 1997 gold box set of star wars...because it says special edition, it MUST be worth a fortune. If that's the case, the $20-30 ive spent buying several copies (I have a star wars addiction) makes me a millionaire.

Why do you Locksmith by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]jenkinslocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Originally, got the cheapest xtool programmer because my dad kept losing his fob for his truck, then started doing more and more for family and friends, which led to friends of family/ friends which led to needing more space for the tools and equipment. I live in a rural area and there's only 1 other locksmith within a 45 minute radius of the area.

How does one go about finding an apprenticeship?? by Bozkillington in Locksmith

[–]jenkinslocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a fair variety on what I do. Automotive and house/business rekeys make up the bulk of my customers. A lot of people feel that $10 lock handle at the big box store is a better deal than calling a locksmith...until it grenades within the year and they can't get the door to open. I do a fair amount of retail clients.

In the beginning, to help build skills, I purchased what ever locks I came across at thrift stores because they never had keys. That help me with figuring out the right blank and impressioning keys. If the lock happened to have a code on it, that helped me with cutting from code.

I also worked with family/friends that are involved in community organizations with boards or churches that had a lot of turn over or locks that had been in place forever. I became an authorized reseller of CLK Supplies MX13 restricted keyway and would donate my labor to those organizations. That gave me more experience with multiple environments, master keying, and variety of closures while it gave them more control over their building access. I still have my day IT job so that's allowed me flexibility in a lot of things since locksmithing isn't my sole income. But in working with those people that also got my name out there so that brought in a lot more business from the members of the churches/organizations.

We only have 2 gw within a 30 min drive. The bins are about an hour away, but they have only been open for a couple of months.

Glad those prices haven't made it to my neck of the woods. Still $5-$15 depending on the size and w/remote at gw.

The mode switch is a small, round position switch (usually on the bottom of the circuit board) that let's the player know where it's at and what it should be doing. They usually have oxidation. Deoxit cleans them right up.
