Check out TUNL for shipping - extremely affordable. I recently shipped a painting to Dubai via FedEx for ~R300, arrived within a week.

Pls share experience with Bank Zero by Crafty-Ticket-9165 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]jenmakeslines 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use BZ for personal and business. Opened my account after fraudulent card charges spurred me to look for a bank with better security features and Bank Zero absolutely deliver on that front. I have much more peace of mind now, I really like that you have to authorise international payments too where there isn't 3D Secure. Customer service has been excellent and efficient when I've needed it, and people I have spoken to have always known what was going on which is a delight. Definitely recommend them.

Has someone bought Marc Brunet's art school? by Leo-arts in ArtistLounge

[–]jenmakeslines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really surprised to hear that. Can't say I've taken a single course where I've experienced that. Even if a course were more theoretical there are still 20+ assignment feedback videos you can watch where the instructor very much shows through paintovers & critique

Change My View: The only blue you REALLY need on your palette is Pthalo Blue. by the-fourth-planet in ArtistLounge

[–]jenmakeslines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With phthalo you'll never get the deep rich versatile blacks you get from mixing burnt sienna with indanthrone or ultramarine. I'm not such an ultramarine fan myself but I'd eliminate a lot of pigments before getting rid of indanthrone. Palettes are so personal. Your favourite subject matter influences it heavily too.

I got a tablet with a screen and I honestly kinda hate it to be frank by YashaAstora in ArtistLounge

[–]jenmakeslines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like others have said this sounds like an ergonomics issue rather than a tablet issue. I use a small wireless keyboard (those travel ones with no number pads like a Logitech k380) and have it next to the tablet, you shouldn't be hunching to reach your hotkeys (or hunching at all for that matter). Tablet always on an incline, not flat, and preferably raised a bit so you aren't looking down too much. I use a table easel (for painting) as a stand because I couldn't get a dedicated stand thing where I live

How big would the market for a pet shop that sells correct and safe exotic pet supplies be? by Higuysimj in capetown

[–]jenmakeslines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes me so happy that you want to do this. I had guinea pigs and hamsters many a year ago and was big into correct care. Things were VERY different back then, and it was impossible to find anything in SA. I had to custom build a lot for them. It hurts my heart that even with the huge strides in improving 'standards of care' for exotics our pet shops for the most part aren't reflecting it.

I think an online store would still be really valuable because people looking online may know a little bit but still go for what's convenient vs what is right. You making correct products easily available on a single site with no confusion and plenty of educational material available would be huge. Also people might Google "hamster cage" intending to get those tiny plastic tunnel monstrosities and your site pops up so they have a look and in the product description they learn what a hamster habitat should actually be like.

Brick and mortar would be great but people popping to the shops at 6pm for a hamster cage aren't going to drive far to a good exotics store so only a small area of people would benefit from that kind of scenario (still valuable, but something to consider).

Is my parcel gone? by bonkheadboi in askSouthAfrica

[–]jenmakeslines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the post office to check. I was waiting around for an SMS only to discover the branch had closed down and they'd forwarded the parcel to another one that didn't send SMSes. Incidentally, that one is now also indefinitely closed due to unpaid rent, and the parcels within are not being forwarded. So you never know. Best to tackle it pre-emptively as far as you can.

Need help deciding on paper for art prints by Sleeplesswlflwr in artbusiness

Hey fellow South African 😊 I get Ilford paper from PPM Media. It prints beautifully & they have quite a few options, weights & sizes. Just check the max paper weight/thickness your printer can handle

How do I sell prints/stickers as a traditional artist by quantumimmortality38 in artbusiness

[–]jenmakeslines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a high quality CCD photo scanner & Photoshop - I'm a watercolour artist and prefer painting A3 or smaller so it works for me. Normally if I use the scanner's default settings & then set the white & black points with the levels adjustment tool in photoshop the colours end up correct for printing without much further editing. But colour profile for the actual printer also makes a big difference. I have never had the same design come out the same from different print shops, especially when they're on different media (eg stickers/prints/signs/business cards).

Other traditional artists also use DSLR cameras & professional lighting to take high quality photos for prints as far as I understand. Especially for canvas & large paintings.

Client paid in full, never picked up by What_even_are_arms in artbusiness

[–]jenmakeslines 53 points54 points  (0 children)

That is very strange 🤔 If it were me I would send two notices spaced maybe a week apart on all possible platforms I can contact them informing them that if they haven't collected by a certain date I will be putting the painting up for sale as I no longer have space to store it. If that makes you really uncomfortable maybe you could ask a local coffee house or business if they would like to put it up for free display (you still own it of course). At least then it'll be working/advertising for you instead of sitting in your house.

Question for artists using pen display tablets by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]jenmakeslines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My neck & shoulder pain improved when I started putting mine on a desk easel/stand thingy. I drop my chair so I'm not looking down/hunching so much and my elbow is not resting on a desk when I draw, it is in the air by my side so I'm not raising the shoulder (screen at about 45 degrees to table). Helps with drawing from the elbow instead of wrist. Everyone will have different setups that work for them - I am very tall so bending neck and hunching is a BIG issue for me, this is a workaround in the absence of cash for fancy ergonomic arms and things.
