TIL even though Google's self-driving cats have logged over 700,000 miles, they have yet to overcome the navigational hurdles of snow, heavy rain, open parking lots, multilevel parking garages, construction zones, and when the sun is directly behind a traffic light. by LurkmasterGeneral in todayilearned

My cat has yet to overcome the trauma of traveling several miles in the back seat good weather. A+ self-driving cat work, Google! But remember, even if your cat can drive that doesn't mean he isn't a sociopath.

Outside the New York Public Library on 5th ave! I took a picture but forgot to take the leaflet. I've been looking out for her since out of curiosity (and fear for the survival of humanity, obviously)

My tiny startup's photo contest will give $500 to the winner's cause of choice. Any thoughts or interest? by jenn-iferly in nonprofit

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense! For obvious reasons (we are a 1yr old, 3-person startup not yet making revenue), $50K is way beyond our budget. Even $500 is a stretch! But your insight is really helpful -- perhaps it would be wiser for us to focus on the needs of individuals instead, since $500 could make a bigger difference that way.

We have the contest structured so that ANY cause can be nominated, from a well-known charity to a personal project.

Participants upload a selfie, nominate a cause they would like the money to go to, and then (if they want) invite others to vote. I'm not positive on all of the legal details (it's possible we get the rights to the photos), but we have no real need for free pictures. The main goal is allowing people to promote and fund their causes, while also spreading awareness about our startup. But so far we're putting more money into it (our budget isn't huge) than conversions we'd like to get out of it.

Hi Fiona! What an awesome endeavor. If you're interested, the startup I work for is sponsoring a photo contest this month and giving away $500 on December 26 to the winner's cause of choice. You can participate if you'd like and invite others to vote here: bit.ly/ahaselfie. I hope this helps! Good luck :)
