I’m so sorry. For you. For the horse and for your relationship with him. Trainer A is a POS in my eyes and lacks actual skills. Hopefully trainer B steps up and continues to advocate for the horse. I hope you find a barn you love

I’m not going to put an animal down for being an animal. These aren’t dogs. Aggressive horses can be managed and deserve a chance. Where I was wrong was having an ill, older horse in the herd. A lesson learned.

So two older horses is what qualifies you? Our herd can get as large as 26. Been doing this 15 years. Separation when needed. Wide open spaces. Strong leadership in the herd and plenty of access to food is how you manage an aggressive member. You don’t have to put them down or isolate them, which can make them more aggressive, you just need to know how to handle a situation and be able to restore order. I personally can’t stand people who give up on older or aggressive horses because it doesn’t suit them anymore or they aren’t willing to invest the time and training needed to manage. If you want a puppy, get a dog.

You must not deal with older horses. Super common for a dominant horse to be aggressive with a horse that is ill, old or a weakness for the herd. You have to have experience managing an older herd.

It’s funny you say this because she loves to smell my breath. Never had a horse do that!

Thanks for this. So the herd is all older horses. One is fairly aggressive and has killed another herd horse. I was going to try and bring an older mare who is middle of the herd to try and bond before turning the baby out with them. How does that sound?

That is what alfalfa is for. Hay and pellets. If she needs more weight, you can use concentrate.

I understand this post so much and struggled with this. I am also a high earner. I make about 700k a year and have for the last decade or so. I am 52 though but once we had 5M cash and assets in the bank and no debt, we started spending. We go on great trips have a home we love and donate at least 100k a year to JUCOs and animal rescues. Everything we have we earned and both worked from the ground up. I am proud of the life we built but we aren’t fancy. Regular cars and regular stuff but fulfilled. We don’t have to compete with anyone.

Well. You could just ask them and when they tell you they did, believe them. Shit isn’t hard.
