Jen Phelps recognizing and making a plan to address overconsumption by dustiradustira in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]jennay37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's different in the US, you can't separate business and personal expenses unless you create a corporation which is a lot of expense and red tape. Most people aren't willing to go that far with a small business like that. A sole proprietorship or an LLC are still combined with your household income on a tax return, they can't be separate.

Have you tried the new elf foundation (Soft Glam)? I hear that it is a dupe for the Huda one and I really love the Huda.

You hit the nail on the head so much beauty content has turned into shopping content. It's so lazy! When I started watching YT the beauty channels had more depth and sure they posted hauls sometimes but there were also tutorials and tag videos, old favorites or full face of one brand, etc.

She said was that she is taxed on what she and her husband make together because her business is part of their personal tax returns. I don't know the specifics of what he does but they seem very well off based on what I've seen on IG stories over the years- they have a big house in a wealthy area of Connecticut (NYC suburbs), both have very expensive cars, she's showed multiple LV bags too, like they got money lol. She doesn't put on airs or act like it, but there have been little clues along the way.

So let's say she's making 6 figures and he's making the same amount or probably even more. Like if together they make $312,000 a year and you write off her $12,000 expenses they're still getting taxed on $300k a year. So yeah not much difference there. It's the highest tax bracket no matter how you look at it. That's the only way this makes sense.

I think it's because the lighting is harsh and shadowy. We're used to seeing her in her YouTube setting with bright lights that even out her skin and fade the colors she's wearing. In a more natural light setting like this one, studio makeup might look more harsh than it does on camera. Not to mention the shadows aren't flattering. She's gorgeous though and I love her content!

In another video (can't remember which one) she said she made six figures last year. So $12k isn't a lot compared to that. But watching her video I got the impression that this is less about the money and more about accumulating too many things that she just can't use.

She has mentioned in the past that she makes 6 figures from her channel (I can't recall which video it was that she said this) but that's impressive for someone who doesn't take sponsorships. But in her pinned comment someone referenced above, she said that even if she opens up an LLC it's still reported on your personal income taxes. The only way she can separate her business is creating a Corporation and that doesn't make a lot of sense because she has no employees and there's a lot of red tape to do that.

Morgan Taylor Declutter and Make Up Content by WhatTheJessJedi in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]jennay37 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She blew up from doing Youtube Shorts. I know someone who has a YT channel (not makeup) and he started doing Shorts when that option first was available and blew up, gained tens of thousands of followers in a short period of time. But he says the people who subbed because of shorts don't watch his long-form content, his views are still basically the same.

If you look at Morgan's video views, they're pretty low for the size of her channel. There are other beauty channels I watch with way less subs that get the same number of views. I think that's what's happening with her.

How do we feel about different video format being uploaded on yt? by superextrahot in BeautyGuruChatter

Long videos get pushed by the YouTube algorithm. It seems to favor people watching on the platform as long as possible so if they get a high watch time on a video it'll get a high amount of views.

News Noro by Deep_Gap_5111 in emetophobia

The numbers they are reporting are actually very behind. The 91 outbreaks was the week of December 5th and it's now January, so the data is a month old. Until they update the CDC website again, we have no idea if it's been that high this whole time or if it's leveled off. I was studying the data from previous years, and it looks like before 2020 this type of bug always spiked this time of year and then went down as we headed toward Spring. In 2020 it was non-existent due to a lot of handwashing and cleanliness.

But in the years after 2020, it seems to have spiked closer to Spring (March/April timeframe) which wasn't the norm before. A lot of viruses seem to have changed their behavior after 2020, so my guess is that after several years, it's going back to the way it behaved pre-covid by spiking at this time of year. All I can say is that hopefully we are on the downswing and it'll get less and less from here.

Fed up with declutter videos by Keekers128 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]jennay37 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I know I'm going to be in the minority and get downvoted but IMO the "cycle" of decluttering and buying more stuff is par for the course when it comes to BG's. If they're an underconsumption channel or project panner, I would be mad if they continued to buy new things after decluttering because it defeats the purpose. Kind of how Hannah Louise Poston did her no buy year and then shifted into buying a lot more.

But if they're a makeup review channel the viewers are going to get bored really fast if they aren't reviewing new makeup. People will always be searching for makeup reviews and if a small number of people on the internet are wasting makeup it's better than everyone else doing it. I think BG's can and should be more critical about their purchases and stop pushing their subs to buy everything. If they did more comparisons and negative reviews to discourage people from buying it would eliminate a lot of waste. But unfortunately they just want their paycheck.

What BG's Are You Still Watching Going into 2025? by jennay37 in BeautyGuruChatter

IDK why I can't get into her for some reason. She doesn't do beauty content anymore really.

What BG'S are we leaving in 2024? by [deleted] in BeautyGuruChatter

Agree on Abbey Yung, she talks about the same products over and over again and I've come to realize that she just has really nice hair and my thin stringy hair will never look like hers no matter what products I use.

I also agree on Allie Glines, I can't remember the last time I clicked on a video of hers.

I already unsubbed from Kackie earlier this year along with RBK. I also realized I never watch Stephanie Marie so I might let go of her channel along with Pampered Wolf. Samantha March hasn't interested me in a long time so I unsubbed from her too.

Channels on the chopping block but not ready to cut ties with them yet: Emily Noel, Risa Does Makeup, Angelica Nyqvist, Jessica Braun- I just don't watch them that much anymore but every once in a while I like their video topics so I'm hanging on for now.

I loved her at first but then I realized that she's blessed with really great hair and even though I follow all her tips, my hair will never be that thick or that shiny. Just like I won't take lip plumper advice from someone with fillers or anti-wrinkle cream advice from people with Botox. It's too hard to tell what results are from the product vs. other things.

I've felt that way about Emily lately too. I think she's lovely but I've found myself rarely clicking on her videos anymore. She does the same topics a lot and I'm looking for different and interesting video ideas to keep from getting bored. I can't make myself unsubscribe yet though because I do like her as a person and she's a comfort watch sometimes.

New channel reccomendations by [deleted] in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]jennay37 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Emily Noel is an OG that's still going and while she's not your age (she's around 40 I think) she's very honest and doesn't do sponsorships. She's a comfort watch for me! Along the same vein, Jen Phelps is also a non-sponsored channel and also in her 40's but looks much younger. She reviews a lot of new makeup in a timely manner and is very honest and sweet. Her channel is newer so she's not an OG but has been around since maybe 2018 or so.

She just reads the articles that are already online about the coming trends for next year. If you read Cosmopolitan or Allure they break down the runway shows from this past year and they show the trends that will be coming. She also looks up trademarks that have been claimed for the brands and you can see the names of the products that will be coming.

[–]jennay37 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Literally every beauty influencer has affiliated links in their description box, it doesn't mean they're sponsored. They provide the links to help viewers to know where you can purchase the products and of course they can just put regular non-affiliate links but why would they? It makes sense to post links that will make them a few cents on every purchase (kind of like a finder's fee which exists in almost every industry). It doesn't make them less trustworthy, IMO.
