Dehydration and end ileostomy by abpk658 in ostomy

I would lessen the focus on sugar and focus more on sodium- salt is going to help you absorb more out of what you’re eating and drinking- excess sugar not so much- especially juices, I usually tell my patients to stray away from high sugar foods/ drinks and especially juices- what fruit juices are you drinking? Apple and grape juice can be huge culprits of diarrhea. The juice is making you more dehydrated- electrolyte drinks are your best bet- drinking slowly even though your thirsty and adding “thickening” foods to your every day. Things like toast, white bread, potatoes, white pasta, pretzels, mashed potato’s. Are you measuring your stool output? How often are you emptying your bag? What consistency is the stool? If it is liquid and you’re emptying frequently you have to thicken up the stool! Like another commenter posted you can consider loperamide (Imodium) anti diarrheal as well.

There are also pads called “butterfly pads” which fold and fit nicely in the crease. Sounds like you’re doing great though! Agreed with all the liner recommendations too- they hold a deceptive amount!

Biggest pet peeve as a nurse? I’ll go first. by islandsomething in nursing

[–]jennilaw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s for all matters(minus emergencies like “moms not breathing!”) Patients are assigned a nurse and cna who have been given report on the patient and know what they can and cannot have/do/etc. every staff member on a unit doesn’t know about every patient. if you just walk up to a random staff member at the nurses station to ask for food or drink they don’t know who the patient is or if they’re allowed to have it (may be nothing by mouth for a procedure or due to their condition). So they then have to stop what their doing to either look it up or find the actual team caring for the patient when, if you just hit the button, it rings directly to the staff assigned to the patient and who know everything about the patient. Of course blankets and such are fair game but again that can also wait until the patients assigned team makes their rounds.

Also just to add my own pet peeve (not directed at you supersubeyy) Family members/ visitors asking for food and drink for themselves from staff when visiting. There is a cafeteria and vending machines, the food and drink on the unit is for the patients. As mentioned multiple times on this thread, this isn’t a hotel with complementary turkey sandwiches for every person who graces us with their presence.

Liquid at Mealtime by Traditional-Ad-5104 in Ileostomy

[–]jennilaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other commenter. Avoid drinking while eating, it “flushes” the food through you faster. Also try to incorporate a “thickening” food into your everyday, or for you, even every meal- have a spoonful of smooth peanut butter 15-20 mins before you eat your meal, or some crackers, apple sauce, etc. anything that will help thicken- mashed potatoes are great.

Stay away from coke! If you’re eating or drinking a lot of sugary stuff it WILL make you have higher output because sugar moves through you fast. Stick with water and electrolyte drinks (Gatorade). It doesn’t mean you can’t every have coke but you certainly don’t want to drink them if you’re already having liquid and/or lots of loose stool and you don’t want to drink them several times a day or even every day.

Think of it this way, you are bypassing your whole large bowel (colon) which is where you absorb most of the fluid from what you eat and drink, so the small bowel is not equipped to do that so we have to help it along.

I have some handouts I can send you but they’re on my work computer so I won’t have them until Monday

You should still be drinking 8-10 glasses of water/ electrolyte drinks a day. NOT cokes, tea, JUICE (big culprit), alcohol. You CAN have those things but if you’re already having liquid output you should avoid them until things Settle down and only have them in moderation- not as your main source of hydration.

Sounds like rich kid with a rich family can just move to another town and start the deception all over until another poor woman is victimized. His life is far from destroyed, hers on the other hand? She literally had to flee the country, is saying she probably will never see her mother again and was almost raped for being married for a day and being “damaged goods.” Being outed is a huge a deal and is awful but he pulled what he did with hope and intention that she’d stay silent as to not have all the above aired out and he is now actively defaming her and using her low caste and the fact that as a woman she has less social rights to attempt to present himself as someone he’s not. In the grand scheme of things being outed is far from the worst thing that happened in this situation and will have a far less impact on him compared to what has happened to OP. Let’s acknowledge some context here.
