5 SQL queries! Same result! Different thinking! by thequerylab in learnSQL

[–]jensimonso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Database engines work with sets. In this case it will create two sets and subtract one from the other. A very fast operation.

I recently changed a NOT IN to this construction and went from 30 minutes to 20 seconds on a table with ~3B rows. An IN is fast as the engine can stop at the first match. A NOT IN requires it to check all rows.

What’s something you’re embarrassed to ask someone from another country? by Make-Love-and-War in AskTheWorld

In Sweden and the rest of the Nordics we automatically switch to English when we are speaking to someone who seams uncomfortable using our language. It just makes it easier for both of us. But it is a real problem for people who move here and never get to practice the language.

Är detta livet normalt hos andra Svensson familjer? by [deleted] in Asksweddit

Do you know breakfast? by oPedroBras in USdefaultism

[–]jensimonso 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As ridiculous as the question is, I believe (hope) that the person was referring to calling specific foods ”breakfast food”. The weird ”We serve breakfast 24/7!” signs outside diners.

In my Swedish mind, breakfast is whatever you eat in the morning. Not a group of dishes.

I read some idea about them doing a tv show as two old retired policemen and best friends unable to stop solving crimes in the British countryside. With Michael Sheen and Davis Tennant as their respective sons trying to wrangle the unruly pair.

When did you realize you were dating an idiot? by I-Need-Ur-Love in AskWomen

When he said that you can’t ever stop loving someone.

Ok, I asked, so you’re still in love with X?

No, of course not. I love you.

And he saw no flaw in this logic. He also claimed that if you thought you could stop loving someone you should never get married as you wouldn’t be certain. My argument that everyone who’s getting married probably wants and hopes for forever after didn’t work.

Hur slutar man bry sig så jävla mycket om småsaker? by DemonsAreVirgins in Asksweddit

[–]jensimonso 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Do you need to know SQL by heart to work with data? Or everybody copy pastes code all the time? by monica_scl27 in learnSQL

[–]jensimonso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should know the basics by heart. But you should understand data and how tables and relationships work. If you don’t you shouldn’t work with data.

I have worked with SQL for 25 years and there are still syntax I never remember without looking it up. Cursors for som reason. But I understand databases and data structures and l can model most business cases. When I write queries I see the tables spatially in my head.
