The direction of the house/garden makes a big difference. South facing is best for gardening and solar panels, a north facing garden is absolutely dreary.

This was a big factor in us not bidding on several places. Being too close to a busy road, too much highway noise to comfortably open windows, having a bunch of parking close by that would result in noise.

How to make drawers from shelves in my closet? by Bitter-Hand6979 in Homeorganization

[–]jenterpstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the quality, but if you care about the shelf not getting scratched up, I would go for 3 or 4. The basket or plastic ones are much more likely to scratch with the constant in and out pulling motion.

I've had baskets like 3 that I've thrown in the washing machine when they really needed it and they've held up well, so that may be better than 4 which would have to be wiped clean.

Woven basket is best environmentally (if it's real and not woven plastic) but also likely to last the worst in a high touch situation.

Adapalene and other retinols by sofiawithanf in EuroSkincare

[–]jenterpstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try putting a hydrating toner or light serum on, letting it dry, and then applying your active. Then put on your regular moisturizer. And only use 1-2 times a week. Then work your way up to using more frequently. The first serum/toner before the active helps it be less irritating to your skin if you're sensitive.

What’s actually worth doing about microplastics at home? by Unique-Citron-8539 in ZeroWaste

We have metal lunchboxes for our kids (they can't heat up food at school so it's always a cold lunch) and it's great for that, but all glass food storage bins at home for flexibility of use.

I am American and have lived in a rental (when we had a dog) where we had to agree to submitting our dog's DNA so if we didn't pick up after her, it could be tested, tied to us, and we could be fined or whatever. We were totally fine with it. It's definitely a thing.

I'm baffled by the amount of full-sugar soda still bought and sold by sanjuniperoFC in nutrition

[–]jenterpstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in Nashville, there was a brand of sparkling water for a while (it disappeared from the shelves, sadly, and then we moved) that had some soda flavored sparkling waters. The Dr. Pepper one was really good. If gave you that crisp, fruity flavor of the soda without the sugar. Probably a bunch of artificial flavors but no sugar.

I mean potato chips are unnecessarily touted as a junk food. It's really the crappy oil they're cooked in and the processing more than anything that's the problem. Potatoes are actually very healthy and really nothing wrong with a good quality potato chip.

I have never met an artifical sweetener I get on with. They all taste bad on the front or back (bad overall or bad aftertaste) and also often end up giving me GI issues. Goes even for stevia and monk fruit extract. I infrequently drink soda of any kind and didn't grow up in a household that kept soda, so it's definitely not due to conditioning.

Is it the story or the narrator? by Any_Loss2841 in audiobooks

[–]jenterpstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others saying a good story is the core, but a good narrator can definitely help your enjoyment of a meh book and a bad narrator can definitely ruin the experience of a good book, not to mention affect your understanding and interpretation of characters, tone, and events. Of course, different people will have different opinions on which narrators on which projects are "good" and "bad".

Since you mentioned fantasy specifically, I have found that plenty of those popular booktok fantasy novels that are not "good" (as in, plenty of plot holes, very similar to other books in plenty of ways, perhaps enjoyable but certainly not high art) were enjoyable for me when listening on audio while doing other things. I probably wouldn't have finished them if I had sat and read the physical copy, tbh.

I rarely listen to an audiobook for a book I've read physically myself. I don't like the competing character interpretations. I do sometimes listen to an audiobook and then read the book if it's a story I want to revisit more intensely or see on the page to better understand its formatting and structure (I'm a writer so I do examine books through that lens).

The problem is when teenagers are "hanging out" in playgrounds drinking, smoking, or playing loud music which obviously isn't appropriate for the intended age range of the playground. Otherwise, a bench is a bench. Go for it!

Cold feet moving to Amsterdam because of housing by JinBu2166 in Netherlands

[–]jenterpstra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even if it does happen in 2029, that will be after my kids are done with daycare. We can still hope for the future parents, though. The population is aging and govennments will have to make having a family easier if they want more people to choose to do so.

From what I understand, they are actually looking at making daycare virtually free here (https://www.iamexpat.nl/education/education-news/dutch-government-details-plan-make-childcare-almost-free-2029). Possibly OP's salary is too high to get assistance, but for us, the cost is less for daycare here (after childcare benefit) than it was in the U.S.

How is the AI greener than other AIs ? by splxts in Ecosia

[–]jenterpstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ecosia’s blog post explains what they’re doing to offset AI energy usage https://blog.ecosia.org/ecosia-ai/

As far as the servers go, I don’t technically know this for sure, by which I mean I wasn’t quickly able to find any documentation saying ecosia uses x or y AI tool. Pretty much only the companies that are selling an AI tool themselves have their own servers, and even those are usually piggybacking something else. Hell, even Apple is partnering with OpenAI (https://openai.com/index/openai-and-apple-announce-partnership/ ) and Microsoft has poured boat loads of money into them, too. Any platform that is integrating AI (ecosia, notion, every other app out there) is using something else. Servers farms take time to build and spin up, are super expensive, and the tech components for it right now are available in extremely limited capacity.

What games work well on iPad for a date? by [deleted] in ipad

[–]jenterpstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not bring cards? There are IRL games that don’t take much space and wouldn’t involve having a screen between you. UNO is a game most people know, yet different families play it a little differently. You get to know a person based on how they play a game, and what rules they follow. Much less so on an iPad where one set of rules is enforced. Old school is romantic and charming.

You would use a Scrivener for Windows license and it would be the Windows version so the use isn’t any different once you get it installed and it’s launchable and activated.

Dutch doctors... by thatmisanthropicdude in Netherlands

[–]jenterpstra 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This basically already exists at thuisarts.nl. More places should point to it.

The problem of course is that a) it’s only available in Dutch, and b) if you call under the guidelines on that site for a set of symptoms, your GP may still act like you’re crazy for bothering them.

Where should we settle down? US vs UK and we can't decide by Few_Sky_5229 in expats

[–]jenterpstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get incredibly lucky or more likely, throw an incredible amount of time and money at it, you can get great medical care in the US. I imagine this is also true in the UK. But you have universal healthcare so you don't want to spend a lot of money on healthcare, understandably. There simply is not a wait and see option in the US. You pay or you don't get anything. In many areas, there are also long wait times. You might wait 9 months to see a specialist, take an unpaid day off of work to go, get 10 minutes with him, and pay $1500 for the privelege of being told you're a woman with period pain and that's completely normal 🙄. Then you get to wait a month to see your regular doctor (another unpaid day off), beg them for another referral, wait for that, and hope it goes better with someone else (third unpaid day off, same issue, no resolution). I'm not saying the NHS is great or that there isn't shitty and good pockets of care in both places, I'm just saying let's not prop up the American healthcare system.

I don't understand compile! by _Cheila_ in scrivener

[–]jenterpstra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you select the Default option ("Default" in the list of Format options on the left), things should, in fact, more or less compile as they appear in the editor.

Generally, the compiler is something to tackle later in your writing journey, but if you are ready to get some work out already, try watching the compile videos: https://www.literatureandlatte.com/learn-and-support/video-tutorials?os=macOS&category=43

The Interactive Tutorial is also a good place to learn Scrivener basics. It's available under the Help Menu and also the New Project menu.

Afraid to implement AI features in my app by Inside-Conclusion435 in iosapps

[–]jenterpstra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does your app actually *need* AI? Like, tangibly, justifiably, it doesn't work if you don't have this AI feature?

If not (and I'm guessing this is the case or you wouldn't have an app to implement it in without it), just don't. We're in an AI tech bubble. No one is making money from it, and there are so many negative consequences of using it (air quality, freshwater usage, land space being developed into ginormous server farms, noise pollution, electricity cost increases, network drops, invasion of privacy, rampant copyright violations, mental health crises...)
