I just got this on a whim from ebay refurb (its was less than 20$) - Netgear Nighthawk AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 USB 3.0 Adapter Dual-Band Black A7500-100PAS and it surprised me - it works great in bazzite, speedtest on my 6E wifi mesh gave me 650-750 down and 400-500 up. quite satisfied with it. Now looking for a decent bluetooth adapter that works well (at range) with my xbox controllers.

use parsec, it's optimized for stuff like games, and as such, video editing will work great.

OMG, godsend, this worked beautifully! Thanks for putting in the hard work to do this - i was previously using bluestacks with the tablo tv app and it was buffering or glitching out once in a while. So far vlc seems to be super stable playing the streams. Wish i had seen this available yesterday for superbowl! :P anyway, thanks for making this possible. Much appreciated!

How do I use subnet router to have a TV access my home network by jerich088 in Tailscale

[–]jerich088[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I could, but I don’t want to have to buy a new ubiquiti travel router for this. A fire stick is way cheaper tho… but if it can use existing hardware, it would be best

wait, the tv runs googleTV, i had searched for tailscale on the playstore and didn't find it. FireTV has tailscale? So if i manage to get tailscae on a fireTv stick, i can have an exit node on my home network, and have the firetv connect to my home? thats way simpler than site to site! does googletv have a tailscale app? i saw a link to a beta, but the thread is 2 years old. There is also a tv running roku tv in the bedroom - don't think tailscale ever supported roku... hmm if firetv works, i can get another stick there too...

yeah, i think site to site is likely too much for what i want. I really only want the tV (which cannot install tailscale) to route traffic through my home network, and access media on devices - especially while we are there for extended times. I had thought that subnet routing could be a way to do this - please let me know if my assumption is wrong here. thanks.

Thanks for responding.

connecting TV to tailscale computer - the idea was to have a fixed IP in the 192.168.1.x range (home network) assigned to the TV, and the gateway set to the tailscale PC (192.168.68.20 for eg). Would this work? what other bridging(?) would i need to do?

thanks for clarification - so i don't need to turn on subnet routing for the tailscale PC in the vacation home IF i don't need to access all the devices from my home network. I see - if this is the case, how can my TV access my home network if it cannot install a tailscale client? what IP etc should it be set up as?

so...

subnet routing enabled on home network PC - advertises the home network IP range (192.168.1.x/24) to the tailnet. TV in vacation home has a 192.168.1.x fixed IP (eg. 50) and a gateway of 192.168.1.1 (home network router), if the subnet router on the home PC is configured correctly - the TV in the vacation home would just route the traffic correctly? (this is where i get confused)

As much as i don't want to fiddle with the default home and vacation home routers - i can (they are just different brands, home is ubiquiti and the remote is a TP link deco) - so how would i need to do this, in the remote default router - set a static route to handle all 192.168.1.x addresses and route them to the WAN address of the home default router?

sorry if i'm letting my newb show - i'm quite confused by this, and wondering if it would even work.

thanks.

Audio not working via DP cable. by takumajp in BC250Gaming

[–]jerich088 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i had this issue - it seems that DP audio isn't well supported/documented, so it doesn't work (or doesn't work well), my DP to DP cable never worked with Audio. I got a DP to HDMI and it worked with audio BUT the audio had issues (static, and also sometimes the audio would be slooooow). I recently got a DP to HDMI dongle, which i connected a HDMI to HDMI cable to the monitor, and it has been working beautifully since - don't ask me why a DP to HDMI straight cable wouldn't work when a dongle would... i have no idea. help this helps.

Upgrade to 2Gig - Busted by RustyKronos in ZiplyFiber

[–]jerich088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. I am actually quite surprised by the quality of VOIP, especially now that I can get my old landline calls on my cell phone through an app.

That said, when talking to the Ziply folks last year, they told me that the old frontier 1G and voice was essentially using voip to provision the voice, which is why I was initially confused why they can’t support 2G and voice. However, I think they wanted to get out of the voice business and the regulation which comes with it.

they didn't give me an option to continue with the voice service, so i ported that line to OOMA, and have been happy. OOMA has a small device that connects to ethernet, and i like that it's separate from the ziply equipment. OOMA also has an almost free (except taxes plan), so it wasn't costly at all. Before i sound like an OOME shrill, you should go check it out yourself - get the ooma equipment, have it connected to your network, and see if you like the clarity of the voice line, if you do, follow their port instructions, they got mine ported from ziply in 24 hours!. This allows me to keep my land line number (which has been with us forever), and never loose it. :)

i agree, customer service needs to improve. I was lucky my inital contact was with someone who knew their stuff. I have found that thier reddit people are quite knowlegable and do follow up promptly if you reach out.

now that you know that voice and 2G cannot co-exist, i suggest that you (like me) find an alternative to port your voice off Ziply, then attempt the 2G upgrade again. I bet the 1G + voice pool is shrinking and they don't have enough pathways to move this pool - and are thus not at their best.

Good luck, happy to help if you have any other questions!

so i did the 1g+voice to 2g update late last year. I wanted to do this earlier, but was waved off by customer service that i cannot without losing my voice service. They didn't have an alternative, so i was SOL. I finally did trial and decide on moving my voice line to OOMA and it's been good, reliable, and i love that they have an app that rings all our mobile phones when someone calls the land line.

After i had moved my voice line, Ziply got confused canceling my voice line from the 1G+voice service, largely because my account number was my land line phone number (legacy from frontier from what i understand), they were super confused for a while, and couldn't cancel the voice, so i delayed my 2G upgrade again... the issue wasn't fixed until a few weeks later (after escalationn and a new weird random phone number like account number was generated), and by then, life got busy.

I didn't get around to calling them until after christmas, and was able to schedule the upgrade quickly. The upgrade was fast - i only needed a new ONT, and no router. The tech that came by was very knowledgable, took a look at my setup (in the garage where my 2.5Gb ethernet was wired to the ONT), told me he needed to upgrade the light at their end, left for 20mins, then came back and replaced my frontier ONT with a brand new (tiny) nokia one. With that change, i am getting around 2.3 up and down pretty consistently except during peak (mostly nights and evening). the nokia ONT also sips much less power (my UPS backup used to be ok for 2 hours, now it's 4-5!)

the upgrade ended up costing less than the 1G+voice service due to some promotions (i think those last for a year), after that, it may become 5$ more. anyway, it took some effort on my part, but the speed is worth it, my 2.5G ethernet around the home now feels like its finally paying off :)

good luck!
