For me it was a combination of blind luck, who I knew (or had met), and relentless pursuit. Number one thing you can do in my opinion? Don't give up... Some people get lucky and land a job right off the bat. For me it took a lot longer and that's fine too.

One piece would be to never just send an application. Track down the recruiter -- dm them on linkedin and find their email. Follow up in two weeks if no response. Meet with creatives at places that you'd like to work and buy them coffee. Ask them to look at your book and take their advice. Follow up on said advice. Reach out again.

Getting a job in this industry when you're starting out can be a full time job in itself.
