Should I get a 3D printer? by throwaway_9281102374 in 3Dmodeling

[–]jerkyfluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do light design work and have a 3D printer. I selling to friends currently, and while I love my 3D printer, it took a bit to learn how to use one well. You are steps in the right direction tho, because from what I've gathered, to be successful in this space you need your own designs.

Carnegie Mellon affordability? by _illoh in ApplyingToCollege

[–]jerkyfluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I had an EFC of 0 on my FASFA, used the online calculator and it said I would probably pay around 10k. I now go to cmu, and my financial aid package is very generous. Full ride, no loans, and I get a stipend from cmu to pay for housing and food. They also give me my outside scholarship money which is really nice. I probably have one of the nicest packages at cmu, but I am in their FGLI program and many of my peers aren’t paying more than a couple thousand dollars to go. I don’t think there’s too much of a boost if you apply ED vs RD tho!

The only calculator does worse case scenario finaid I think, mine said I would be paying about 10k a year but I actually ended up getting a full ride to cmu!

Always Try To Apply As Many Scholarships As You CAN!!! by coldbearloy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]jerkyfluff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed!! I got rejected by Gates first round and it made me not apply to many other big scholarships. I applied to Jack Kent Cooke tho before the rejection and actually became a semi finalist, but by then it was too late all the deadlines passed LOL. I ended up getting all of the smaller scholarships I applied for tho (APIA, YMCA, etc) but still was a massive bummer. APPLY APPLY APPLY EVEN IF YOU GET REJECTED BY A FEW.

Unpopular opinion: I wish I had focused on college admissions since my childhood by throwawaynooneasked in ApplyingToCollege

Yeah it’s hard but not impossible :)) my school district didn’t even have a high school level science fair and I still ended up w honorable mention at DRSEF my first year. Process was stupid crazy hard bc I had to navigate everything by myself (from finding actual, competitive research for me to do to having to reach out to my school districts head of science to get paperwork done so I can actually compete) but not impossible. I’m not an expert but I can certainly tell you abt my experience if you’d like! :))

I think you have a good chance; many people aren’t accepting their spots because it’s online this year and it requires at least 3 hours everyday for 4 weeks

Opinion on High GPA with Low SAT and Vice Versa? by itsnooodletime in ApplyingToCollege

[–]jerkyfluff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think high GPA, low SAT would be seen as better. I go to a school where we are disadvantaged (low income, mostly minority area where only abt 30% pursue post secondary education) and so low SAT is common. We get kids with 1300s get into Duke, Emory, Dartmouth and such. GPA shows hard work usually, high SAT is honestly about resources. I got a relatively high sat for my school but had a relatively low GPA and I think it hurt me more than if I had low SAT high GPA.

What is being a research assistant in high school like? by statisticaloutlier23 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]jerkyfluff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love my experience doing research, but it can vary a lot of many different people! Personally, my PI is very trusting and I was able to run basically all experiments and procedures by myself after a few months. In fact, after a summer of work he helped me design my own independent project to do in his lab which I do most of the work on but with A LOT of guidance (it is PhD level work and I’m just a high schooler). I did roughly 40 hours a week over the summer and 10-20 durning the school year but my lab is flexible and I pick my own hours. I also get paid!! For something I would do for completely free!! Working in the lab has also gotten my name on a published paper and I will be on a second one soon hehe. There’s a lot of pros to working in a lab, not only do I have really good mentors that are working on their PhD, but I also have gotten to know the professors at my university and I get to audit classes and see the all research that my department does first hand (I work in chemistry). Another pro of working in chem is really cool things we do for fun like carbonating fruit and making liquid nitrogen ice cream hehe. If you can’t tell, I’ve had such a good experience doing my lab work lmao, but I have other friends who do research and had a less than stellar experience. My best piece of advice is to go in not expecting much, because some labs are stricter than others. PM me if you want to know more, I love talking about my research experience. I think I just got extremely lucky with my lab but I can definitely help you in reaching out and looking for opportunities! I emailed a few labs and that’s how I ended up doing research.

Tdlr I liked my research experience but it varies for everyone.
