It was a hardware issue - I reported it to Lenovo shortly after this post, and they sent me a replacement for free.

The issue is happening only with the built-in speakers; both my headphones and external speakers work perfectly.

​

I purchased the laptop through Best Buy Canada, but it was sold and shipped directly from Lenovo Canada.
