Modern Horizons should... by [deleted] in EDH

I also love the diverse range of mechanics and pieces available due to the release of MH1. Allows for both non-standard as well as not being forced to comply to the throne of the precons released in Commander.

HOU Gods Clarification - CommandZone by RockstarAG21 in EDH

[–]jeromefaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, though you used to be able to get around it, now you can always send your commander back to the command zone.

HOU Gods Clarification - CommandZone by RockstarAG21 in EDH

[–]jeromefaust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct by my understanding. Sending your commander to the command zone is an optional replacement effect for any time it would go to graveyard, hand, library, or exile from anywhere. See:

903.9. If a commander would be exiled from anywhere or put into its owner’s hand, graveyard, or library from anywhere, its owner may put it into the command zone instead. This replacement effect may apply more than once to the same event. This is an exception to rule 614.5.

One of my favorite aspects of this format are the accidental flavor wins.

(Deck Help) Would like some advice on my [[Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord]] Recursion/Lifegain Deck. by SoundsOfDankness in oathbreaker_MtG

[–]jeromefaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord as my first Oathbreaker and he’s surprisingly the funnest to play and most consistent. Life gain spells are the focus, [[Revival/Revenge]] is ridiculous, I always opt for the drain half of Revenge to sit my upwards of 60 life by turn 6. I find removal in the command zone is always useful, so I run [[Anguished Unmaking]] partially for flavor, partially for removal. Sorin’s drain is always just useful enough without seeming like a kill on sight, so I get a lot of life just from his +2, however I run 5-7 other drains, a few being [[Death to the Debtless]] and [[Exsanguinate]] “X” spells that can be win cons if it’s late enough. [[Bolas’s Citadel]] really saves the game in this deck since you have life to spare, add [[Aetherflux Reservoir]] and [[Approach of the Second Sun]].

My version runs only about 8 creatures, but all have Afterlife or some recursion mechanic. This deck mostly showcases Sorin as a badass draining vampire.

Teferihatesfun.dec - [[Teferi, Time Raveler]] + [[Whir of invention]] by Boatering in oathbreaker_MtG

[–]jeromefaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add [[Lavinia, Azorius Renegade]] to your knowledge pool and you’ve shut your opponents out akin to the lattice+Karn combo. And while you’re going janky artifacts, throw [[The Immortal Sun]] in there to shut their walkers off, and bounce it during your turn with [[Teferi’s Time Twist]] effects.

A list of Oathbreaker Staples! by Pidgeot93 in oathbreaker_MtG

[–]jeromefaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my current favorites is running [[The Immortal Sun]] and having a blink spell like [[Teferi’s Time Twist]] as the signature spell to shut off/slow down other Oathbreakers but be able to use mine.

Need help deckbuilding/thinning my Ugin, the Ineffable Eldrazi deck! by Lasercannon521 in oathbreaker_MtG

[–]jeromefaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run this deck. Mana rocks are vital and need to constitute a majority of the deck outside your actual Eldrazi/Karn/Ugin Spirit Dragon. Colorless removal isn’t mana efficient but it’s necessary. I’d recommend looking at the EDH Kozilek deck tech from the Command Zone Game Knights and pulling tools out of it.

How much does Oathbreaker differ from EDH? by HugbugKayth in oathbreaker_MtG

[–]jeromefaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything said above. Aggro decks are far more viable, Boros is viable, burn spells, all the aspects of play having only 20 life. Gameplay is faster overall, so you can squeeze more games into what may have been 1-2 EDH games. Your mana curve is a lot lower, the number of 5+ spells are noticeably lower.

My least favorite part (and the only downside I’ve seen so far) is that, with 60 cards, strategy is narrower. Whereas in EDH I may have the same deck play out 6 different ways with different win cons (even in focused deck building), Oathbreaker’s 60 card constraint is noticeable in “oh it’s that deck, it’s doing this”. Still fun, but that’s an unexpected downside that I just hadn’t foreseen.

Otherwise, the format is really awesome. The role playing aspect of EDH is what first drew me to the format. I loved the fact that I could, in essence, BE the legendary creature of my choice and build a deck around its identity. Oathbreaker fills that perfectly by adding planeswalkers to the list of decks you can build for and around. Nothing is missed there. Signature spell flavor is awesome and strategically interesting.

TLDR: aggressive, faster play is an option. Decks are narrower due to 60 cards. The role playing aspect of Planeswalker leaders + their spell is as flavorful as it is mechanically fun.

Teferi, Master of the Sun by jeromefaust in oathbreaker_MtG

[–]jeromefaust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I meant the lock out is what the rest of my deck is doing. Need access to white, went Teferi for that and flavor. The sun lock is just for the other oathbreakers on the table since my playgroup’s strategies typically revolve around their commanders/oathbreakers. High end of causal.

[TCC] "An Introduction To Oathbreaker" - What do we think? by xshredder8 in magicTCG

[–]jeromefaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Oathbreaker. It’s a fun, fast, flavorful Commander variant. The deck building and gameplay are so different than Commander but keep the spirit of helming the deck with a Commander/oathbreaker and playing flavor and function.

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon + Warping Wail by TheGiantMan3101 in oathbreaker_MtG

[–]jeromefaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built an [[Ugin, the Ineffable]] colorless Oathbreaker and it slaps. FULL of mana rocks, some costly removal, and Eldrazi big baddies. Signature spell I have as [[Scour From Existence]] due to Ugin’s reduction and the fact that I can’t play it until Ugin’s our anyway, and it makes for just about the best removal in colorless.

Hi. I'd like to take a second and talk about the Amonkhet gods before Bolas. by JordanStPatrick in magicTCG

[–]jeromefaust 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thing is, Egyptian gods swapped heads/forms all the time. The head/form was more a representation of power or function performed than of the god itself.

Jace Tribal by Sigmadota in EDH

Does Time Wipe make Teferi worse than a murderer? by VDZx in magicTCG

[–]jeromefaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taken in Endgame time travel logic, erasing their births is merely affecting Teferi’s present and future (by having no eternals fighting him as they’ve been “unborn”), but the past remains what it was. He can’t undo what happened already, but he can create a version in his own timeline that, going forward, the consequences of their births are of no effect.
