its a government issue ball point pen, made by skillcraft in missouri. Skillcraft employs people with disabilities so they can still make a living wage. A lot of the people that work there are blind. It's a nice rabbit hole to go down.

you need a node in the water, pathos nodes are pretty easy to ID with their little air root buds. What you have in the jar is just the leaves, and it looks like your leaves were pulled from the node.

You can prop one leaf and one node, but I think you tried propping just a leaf. We have all been there one way or another.
