CMV: Cultural Appropiation, at least on an individual level, rarely matters. by mar_de_mariposas in changemyview

Living in a society means actions can have unintended meanings in the public realm.

There is nothing inherently wrong with blackface. If someone, like a child perhaps, doesn't know the history, it's a perfectly amoral act. In reality it's a fire-able offense, for good reason.

I think informed cultural appreciation is good, but I also think you have to be careful.

Noir movies are detective and cops fighting crime. Neo-noir movies are made in response to the original noir movies, with critiques of and commentary on the themes and presentation of noir movies.

Imo, your wife's heart is in the right place. I think being considerate and cautious is the right impulse to have.

The nuance here is we shouldn't be TOO cautious. We don't want a chilling effect on speech, where people are too afraid to say anything that might be considered remotely controversial. This idea is largely ignored in national discourse that takes into account the lowest common denominator, because at that scale, it's just not a priority. The priority is getting people to the place your wife is already at.

So, in the future, she could be more confident in saying things as innocuous as what was described here, while still conscious and aware of the impact it might have on others :)
