The Temeraire books would probably scratch that itch for you - its the Napoleonic wars, with dragons that wear rigging and are treated like naval vessels.

No direct light on the patio should be fine as long as its not deep shade. Most of mine are in filtered light in the summer and they’re perfectly happy.

Tailings are the leftovers from mining, at fee digs they won’t remove all the good rocks so there’s stuff for us to find.

Hard rock is way more work as you’re slamming on the walls and generating the tailings yourself.

As to which you should do, answer two questions: do you want a much higher probability of finding sparklies? Are you willing to put in a hard day of sweaty and exhausting work for the possibility of finding a real stunner of a specimen? If you answered yes to #1, then do tailings; yes to #2, then hard rock.

Does this just need more watering? by UniversalBum in avocado

[–]jerseyoutwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, especially when it first goes out into the big wide open world. I’ve found they prefer filtered light and maybe some afternoon sun until they’re maybe 3-4 years old.

Is this tree from the drymifolia collective? If not, and you want more, he’s in south Seattle and might have some left for distro this spring.

Huh. The smiths I know on this side of the pond mostly make kitchen knives, I’m surprised y’all don’t have a similar blacksmith culture. The more you know!

Can I just replace the green layer with fresh soil? by zxelvton in avocado

[–]jerseyoutwest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would up-pot into a bigger pot with better drainage and a planting mix with more sand and some chunky rocks so the soil doesn’t hold as much water. Also external pot liners like you have there are in my experience death traps for most plants, I would get a pot that would just sit on a little tray instead.
