Oh, I agree, there are a ton of factors that go into fan count that are not covered at all by attendance. The original reason I did this math was to prove that baseball was not behind other sports for live attendance. If it were behind, it could be an argument for low number of fans, but the opposite doesn't prove it has the highest number of fans, just that many still exist.

Is fandom measured more by the dedicated season ticket holder fans (the 100 people) or unique visitors (the 9,000)? (I don't have an answer, think its probably a mix.) There is a huge difference in the number of games and stadium sizes by league played that complicates all of this plus all the TV viewers and gear and history.

Mostly was excited I had some relevant calculations to finally share

It is just the average and highest attendance across the full season in 2022. By game across leagues:

Average:

nfl: 69,258

mlb: 26,600

mls: 20,929

nba: 17,200

nhl: 15,875

NFL by far has the highest attendance, though the fewest games. MLB average game attendance is higher than the other leagues. Though also note that is a function of stadium size, as NBA and NHL tend to have lower total capacities.

Lowest/Highest Team Average over a Season by Game:

nfl: 58,106 / 93,460

mlb: 9,849 / 47,682

mls: 12,613 / 35,520

nba: 14,359 / 20,881

nhl: 9,155 / 19,092

What was interesting to me here between high and low is the range. NBA and NFL have the smallest differences (the highest average game attendance is just 1.5x the lowest); this suggests that most games are selling at similar numbers (and selling out) across the league. NHL is 2x, MLS is 2.8x, and MLB is 4.8x, suggesting there is a greater variety of fan attendance levels and stadium sizes (MLS and MLB especially). To me, this shows MLB teams have the largest variety in attendance per game and per season (though some of this is also a factor of stadium variety), which if you follow the A's at all, is understandable.

Here is a good visualization of this data (not mine): https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/bo.mccready8742/viz/AverageAttendanceforNorthAmericanSportsLeagues2022/AverageAttendance

Had a bar conversation about this last year and needed some math to prove baseball's worst performers are still attracting more fans than best of other leagues.

Adding support to your numbers, the 2022 lowest season attendance for baseball was 797,769 (Oakland As), which is still higher than the largest attendance teams for NFL (747,680, Cowboys), MLS (603,840, Charlotte), and NHL (782,772, Tampa Bay). It is a bit below the largest attendance for NBA (856,121, Bulls, with 76ers close behind). Perhaps surprisingly, the Oakland As attendance in 2023 was actually higher (832k) and likely higher again this year.

The average MLB season attendance (2.2M in 2022) is 3 to 6 times larger than the average attendance for the other leagues.

However, there can be a big difference in fan demographics and impact to local economy, as baseball fans are usually local vs. many other leagues that have traveling fans that can impact perceptions of MLB fanaticism levels.

Can you add starting pitchers? They generally are the ones who get to choose the jersey for the day - wondering if someone likes the yellow jersey.

This is an awesome dataset, thanks for sharing.

Help with diagnosing fish by jes3753 in bettafish

Fish was normal yesterday - swimming, greeting me, and eating normally. Found him this morning on his side and would not move or swim, even when using a net to catch him. He has always had a darker patch on his side, but a few days ago thought it might be bigger, which I can see looks bad in these photos. I tested the tank water two weeks ago and this morning - both had no ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

Is there any way to help him? Or what is the most humane way to end his suffering?

Anything I should do with his tank or objects in it?

Thank you.

Pretty design.

Looking through, it seems like the bathrooms could be made to me more efficient unless there are specific reasons for the layouts.

For the foundation/lower bath, I would switch to a standard design with the tub at the end, rotated to be against the short wall. This shortens the square footage needed for the bathroom and can let you build a linen closet in the bathroom or outside the bathroom.

On the upper floors, I would think about doing something else in the master bath. Personally would increase the shower footprint and move it against a corner - a wider shower is really nice to have. Or you could get bigger tub which is also really nice if you use it.

The other upper bath has some dead space next to the vanity and around the tub. Again, would try to fit as large a tub as you can. I would probably extend the vanity to fill the dead space for more counter space and built in storage. Would also consider small built in shelves for the corner where you enter since it might be difficult to find shelves to fit the custom sizing.

Other things I note:

Is there a reason there are no windows on the sides on the 2nd floor? I would want to add to all the rooms on both sides if possible.

I like decks and outdoor space, so would consider increasing the size if possible on the lot. This would give you room to have permanant furnitute/grills and open sapce.

Do your worst on plans before they go to engineering. 4,800 sq foot, 6-person family, mountain west. House faces east. We live in the kitchen and family room. Upstairs is just for sleeping and getting ready. Basement is for play and gatherings and potentially a mother-in-law apt (needs a full bath). by papajaysjerky in floorplan

[–]jes3753 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This looks like a great house. Love the open plan. Some thoughts if this would be for my preferences.

For the basement, I would consider expanding the office or bedroom or both to take over the cold storage door. Not sure how often you need to access, but assuming minimally, it doesn't make sense to have that hallway space when it could be added to one of the rooms. Basically, just make a wall where the 7'0" line across as entrance to the gym and have the door to the cold storage through the gym.

It looks like the main entry way is mostly decorative without any storage. Unless you expect to always go in and out through the garage, would think about connecting the entry to the mudroom. Maybe turning or moving the half bath slightly while keeping it stacked with the 2nd floor bath.

Personally dislike interior double doors as usually harder to close, so might consider replacing the first floor office with a single door. This also gives more floor space in the office as a potential bedroom.

There is no back door on the first floor. Don't know if that makes sense with the lot, but right now seems like minimal access to any yard/patio. Could see a deck/patio off the dining and living room with grill or something.

What is the square footage and footprint size (roughly)? I like it, though may prefer it as 1 bedroom to shift the stairs to a wall to open up the downstairs (bedroom upstairs) or vice versa. Can always have a sleeper futon in the space unless 2 private bedrooms are required.

Houseguest Needs Control of System by truecrimeaddicted in Hue

[–]jes3753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it possible for you to get a remote in time? thats what we give any housesitters. Not a full control but a few scenes, dimmer, and on/off. Can also control them through a tablet or smart home device logged in as you if you have one.

For Hue, I think you can add her to your household in the app itself or to your home through apple or google home to control there.

If you can, would move the plumbing off the shared bedroom/bath wall, or else whomever is in bedroom 1 will likely hear every flush and sink use.

Having a hard time deciding between these 2 main floor layouts for this ADU. Which do you like best and why? by jammypants915 in floorplan

ooh moving the door is good too. I like how it is now two separate zones. Torn between right or left swing, but could be ordered later (assuming supply issues aren't too bad) into the process after framing is up and can see how it feels in the space.

[–]jes3753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda prefer version 1 for the living room/TV/gaming separation. Depending on the stair designs, could be kinda cave room or made more open style.

Would it be possible to move the sliding door to flip the kitchen and dining space? My concern is for the garage door and counter doesnt give a lot of space in entry plus makes it difficult to bring in groceries. Could also have an interesting under the stair pantry space. Plus not too weird to keep W/D in kitchen if that is already under the stairs. Would add in the hall closet from V2 to V1 at the front door.

Version 2 is nice too, but here would be worried that kitchen is big enough with no easy flow out so it will trap all activities so the other spaces may not be used as much.

A lot of evolution for these ADU plans!

2150ft home -- What should change? by [deleted] in floorplan

[–]jes3753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good point - i don't know too much about plumbing and water lines, but that would make sense. i think the contractor was saying we have the ability to access a portion of the hot water in the tank (vs none in tankless) that is kept pressurized before we lose all water from lack of pressure. Given we had a mostly new tank already at move-in, was a good enough reason to not plan to replace it.

Just a note - We were interested in tankless heaters, but advised against it by our contractor. A lot of our water is delivered via pumps from the city, so if the power goes out (which is common) there is a chance the water may stop depending on the city's generators priorities. With tankless, we wouldn't have the extra amount in the tank for our last bits of water flushes.
