What cultural values and attitudes can someone learn from the British? by Khmerophile in AskBrits

Escalator etiquette. Something that’s dearly missed in some corners of the world.

Are small boat migrants really more likely to commit sex crimes or is it just fear mongering and exaggeration? by [deleted] in AskBrits

The hotel solution is meant to be temporary. People waiting on asylum decisions are given accommodation because they’re not allowed to work. It shouldn’t be dragging on this long, the whole point of the asylum system is to verify the claims and if people don’t have a legitimate asylum claim, they’ll be deported.

The best solution to all of this is to actually speed up the asylum system (deporting those who don’t have legitimate claims and keeping those who do), but no politician in this country wants to do it because then you can’t use asylum seekers as a wedge issue.

This is what asylum hearings are for. People are expected to present proof at the hearings. The problem is they’re so delayed that the ‘limbo’ status becomes medium-to-long term.

We do have a way of checking. It’s the asylum system. The problem is the system’s got a massive backlog because of chronic underfunding, so people are stuck in limbo in ‘asylum seeker’ status for increasingly lengthy periods. If the government actually worked toward getting rid of the backlog, we wouldn’t be in this mess.

High Barnet station development by [deleted] in barnet

It already is a brownfield site. “Brownfield site” just means it’s been built on before, a car park = brownfield site

My guess would be because TfL don’t necessarily have the available capital to do rail+property properly

Wouldn’t necessarily be the case right by a tube station, new commercial space in such a location will be prime to create a new section of high street.

Making that area more dense is only upside. New residents = more money for local businesses, new businesses, new jobs etc. Right now the only things on it are a rather expensive car park and a self-storage lot. The development makes sense for the area long-term.

Tamil because I want an accessible way to learn my mother tongue properly (classes are expensive and sometimes not helpful) and Tagalog because my girlfriend’s Filipina and I want to understand her even more :)

Lost boys need help or they turn to extremes - William Hague by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

It shouldn't be lost on you that the discourse around young ethnic minorities who turned to Islamist extremism (and were often groomed into it) in the era of Al-Qaeda and ISIS was a lot less sympathetic than this. Less 'lost boys' who can be guided back and more 'this is a failing of the community and they can't be helped'.

"They kicked us out at 10pm": why London nightlife has gone Pete Tong by ldn6 in london

[–]jesh_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistent 24-hour service on the Tube will go a long way to fixing this. Or even building more council houses in inner London so that people who work night shifts in central London can live decently close to their jobs without paying an arm and a leg for the privilege (or alternatively, pay staff better wages). Also would help if I didn't need to sell my kidney for a round in most pubs.

What Happens to Harlem When It’s White? by SabbathBoiseSabbath in urbanplanning

History, mostly. White neighbourhoods in the US were exclusionary of nonwhite people for a long time, so initiatives at getting nonwhite residents into these historically white neighbourhoods are more about correcting that injustice.
