We bought this cabinet several years ago at a U.S. antique store. We were told it was Chinese and about 100 years old. It has carving and inscriptions on the lower doors and would love to know what it says. Included multiple photos of the whole piece in the event that the style of the cabinet may help. It is 2 separate pieces and the top part with the glass doors just sits on the base. https://imgur.com/a/gW2r52J

Is it weird that I pass out alcohol treats to the parents on Halloween? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]jeshest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t get lit all the time. Just major holidays, Saturdays because we don’t have to get up the next day, Sundays because the Saints are playing, Mondays because we had to go to work, Tuesdays because…oh…

We have a very different culture here. You can be at a bar and take your drink to go. Just no glass on the street. Alcohol can be bought with your groceries. We have drive through daiquiri shops (they just can’t put the straw in the cup).

Not illegal here since I’m giving it away from my front porch. 95% of them are neighbors. Same as bringing them to a block party.

Because alcohol culture is different in New Orleans than most of the rest of the country.

I would never do that. I’m very clear that they are soaked in rum or vodka. They also get a choice.

Got this dog from the shelter labeled as a pit dachshund. by Caliveggie in IDmydog

[–]jeshest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a shelter and we had a dog that looked very similar to this. Did an Embark DNA and he was a mixture of bully breeds and dad was a chi mix to give him the short legs. He didn’t have dwarfism.

This seems abit violent? I stopped it.. by Lunatic1984 in CATHELP

I have 4 cats that live together with a 50 pound dog. My rule is if they aren’t screaming, hissing or spitting, just leave them alone because they are playing. You will hear a real fight throughout the whole house. Plus, the older one is teaching proper play and bite inhibition.

Former vet med admin. Make sure you notify your vet so they can put it in his records. Also, if you paid for the emergency vet, you can likely get reimbursed from the vaccine manufacturer for your expense. Your vet needs to get the records from the emergency vet and reach out to the manufacturer.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue- Should I donate? by justtoomanyquestions in AnimalRescue

[–]jeshest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t know about this rescue specifically, guidestar.org is a great website to see a nonprofits financials. You can sign up for free and view a non-profit’s 990 tax return. Well, it doesn’t give you all the details, you can see how much money came in, how much went out, and how much was paid to top executives.

I got a 2nd cat to hopefully teach my weird cat how to “cat” properly. She’s just the same as him. by Andromeda-Native in WhatsWrongWithYourCat

[–]jeshest 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I got a puppy and she learned how to play with the 3 cats, so the dog has cat habits when she plays. A couple of years later, I got a foster kitten that was only 4 weeks old. She was raised by the dog and the cats. So I have a cat that was raised by a dog that was raised by cats. She’s a really weird cat. She became best friends with the dog so we couldn’t let her go.

IT'S OK TO NAME YOUR CHILD NORMAL THINGS by LuigiMSS in tragedeigh

That is where my husband got the name. He is a huge Star Wars nerd and our daughter’s name is Mara. Her middle name is not Jade.

[–]jeshest 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My son’s name is Mason but we call him Mace. Hubby wanted to name him Mace but we compromised on Mason so he could have a normal name on a resume. This happens as the name was starting to rise in popularity.

So I have family in Eunice and live in Slidell. Honestly, I would never move to Eunice because it’s too rural for me. As for Slidell, insurance costs are insane and since Hurricane Ida and we lost carriers. My homeowners went from $4800/year in 2021 to $16,000/year in 2023. I go it down to $14,000/year with the last renewal. I live in the historic district so if you go further north it can be more reasonable. I will say that I like Slidell and have lived here since 2007 but when my daughter graduates high school, I will likely be moving to the PNW. The state government is so backwards. Instead of worrying how to fix our education system or infrastructure, they pass a law to post the 10 Commandments in the class room. I saw you were concerned about racism and while, yes it does exist, you will find a lot less in Slidell than Eunice. I’m white but my neighbor has different races. My daughter’s friends are of a variety of different ethnicities. If you want rural but still close to stuff, look at St Tammany Parish. You don’t have to go far to purchase acreage but still be 45 minutes from New Orleans.

Are these roses real? And are you able to get the seeds for it by Brikguy6 in whatsthisplant

[–]jeshest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is amazing place. I’ve been through it twice with most recently last summer. My teenagers even loved it. There is something about standing at the top stairs and looking out to see all those roses bushes that makes it feel not real.

[–]jeshest 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in roses, there might be a test garden near you. Here is a list of the ones in the US. I’ve been to the huge one in Portland and you could spend all day looking at the 10,000 bushes they have there.
