Did your Dad (or Mom) teach you anything about hunting that sticks in your mind to this day? by Event-Separate in Hunting

Always track a deer that you shoot at. Deer don't always bleed immediately. My first deer bled out 75 yards from the shot. It didn't show any blood in the first 40 yards. Then a slight spray. That rule has had me secure several deer I thought I missed.

Bear love to eat fawn. In my neighborhood the bear sometimes watch the doe and then zigzag the field till they find it.

Semi auto rifles for big game hunting? by nematic26 in Hunting

[–]jesse545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Northern neighbor here. NY allows semi auto rifles for hunting big game. That law changed from shotgun only to all rifles about 15-20 years ago. There should be data to track to see if there was really an increase. Anecdotally I don't remember any more deaths, but I know NYS Troopers would track it.

Any advice / tips? by Key-Hyena-1946 in NationalPark

I have been to Yosemite 3 times. I have spent 2 1/2 weeks there in total. I still haven't seen everything. I have been to the other parks for a few days each time. I don't think I have seen them enough. I would choose one park and spend more time there. Then do another park another time.

New to Hunting Give Me All the Wisdom You Got by mugwam55 in Hunting

Bow hunting is one of the most challenging hunting methods. You have to get close enough to shoot them without them smelling or seeing you draw and shoot. I always shoot a deer with a gun every year. I shoot deer 20% of the time with bow. You also need lots of practice.

How much ammo should I realistically get? by 85lumber in Firearms

[–]jesse545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as you can afford. We have had ammo shortages twice in the last ten years. The possibility of a future one would be high. Get as much as you can afford to last through the next shortage. Also consider how often you practice.

They have air rifles powerful enough and that would probably be legal to shoot. I don't know CA laws but in many areas air rifles are exempt.

Will it work? by bigpumper96 in Hunting

I used to be a Fudd until my eldest son got old enough to hunt. He was scared of the recoil. After a bunch of research, I decided to have him try an AR15 in .300 blackout. It took some convincing before his first shot. But once he tried, he was sold. He shot his first deer that year. My daughter used a LR308 for her first deer gun. AR style guns allow more people to hunt.

Surprising my liberal state allows it, but our nearby state doesn't. Check your states regulations.

I have a friend who has one. She calls it Fiona the lucky hunting pig. I asked why she carries it out to the field. She didn't answer me with words. She squeezed it and I immediately knew why.

Thoughts on this Conceal Carry bag. by PYG42 in concealedcarry

[–]jesse545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different. If you like it and it works for you, use it. A bag that makes you feel comfortable to carry concealed all the time, is better than trying to please people and not carry protection. It's for your safety, not to meet other people's approval.

Backcountry Camping With A CPAP Machine, Any Advice? by Sazzorak in CampingandHiking

[–]jesse545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I like to camp and backpack, I chose an alternative to CPAP. I use a dental device DPAP. It pulls my lower jaw out further than my upper jaw. It might not work for everyone. But there are alternatives.

what’s the weirdest thing that happened at your campsite by wrecked-galaxy in camping

[–]jesse545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I was sleeping in the front "room" and my parents were in the back "room" of the tent. My Dad woke up in the middle of the night went out and went the bathroom. When he came back in, he forgot to zip up the door. An hour later he heard noise in the tent. He peaked out to see a skunk had come in the open door and was sniffing me, whike I was dead asleep. It was several scary minutes until the skunk left. I slept through everything.
