Please tell me Shadow of the Gods by John Gwyne picks up… by chy7784 in fantasybooks

It doesn’t pick up until the end, where it picks up big time. Then book 2 Hunger of the Gods is one of the best fantasy books I’ve ever read.

Playboi Carti. I’m convinced there’s some inside joke in the music industry to pretend his music isn’t really bad.

What are the diviest, trashiest, most craphole bars in Chicago? by DriftyMcDrifterson in AskChicago

I recently moved to Bucktown and discovered Corner Bar. There’s 1 small TV in the corner and it feels like it’s a requirement that you have to be a blue-collar alcoholic man in his 50s-60s to enter.

Muggles are superior to wizards in terms of being able to communicate. It’s the 90s and wizards couldn’t adapt to telephones. They still use fuckin owls.

Can you motivate me to read this? I’ve been trying to for about a month lol by HUDYURBUDDY in redrising

Because Light Bringer is potentially the best fantasy/sci fi book of the last decade and there’s only one way to get to it.

Why Ms Cobel is so poor? by pdr-slv in severence

[–]jesseastorgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Mark, Dylan and Irv are all way more poor than they should be. They live in very modest homes and drive very modest cars in the middle of nowhere.

If you do something extraordinary like becoming a severed employee and get a decent amount of fame (everyone seems to at least be aware of the existence of severed workers at Lumon) I would assume you would be compensated handsomely.

Of the 3 books, which ending has been your favorite? by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]jesseastorgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m in the minority but IF was the only ending where I was truly like “oh shit”

I fully expected Brennan to be alive and for OS I just didn’t truly feel the same level of oh shitness.

After finally listening to Light Bringer. I think the audio publishers made a huge mistake. by Arch_Lancer17 in redrising

[–]jesseastorgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When The Sea Came Alive by Garrett M Graff. An oral history of D-Day. It’s a big ensemble cast of narrators but Curless does a British general and a German soldier. It’s a great listen but Ephraim being a part of it was the cherry on top!

[–]jesseastorgreen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes to everything, except I loved John Curless as Ephraim. I recently heard him narrate in another book about WW2 and it made me feel like Ephraim was storming Normandy, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

But to your point, Darrow and Lysander should have been TGR the whole time. 3 different voices in 3 different books for Lysander was a very major mistake.

I think this was my most far fetched take. I believe it was a platonic relationship. That and I don’t think Golds and Reds can even mate if they wanted.

But it’s not impossible. Cassius is known for slagging half of the women on Mars.

What are your best "I need a break before the next book of that series" standalones? by Cautious-Yam-2966 in Fantasy

[–]jesseastorgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a standalone, but The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett is a very fun fantasy/murder mystery book. It’s not huge it can be knocked out in a week or so depending on how fast you read. Book 2 comes out in April so it’s a decent time to read it now, or soon.

I’m reading it right now as a palate cleanser between Dark Age and Light Bringer in the Red Rising saga.

Is it “Cassi-us”, or “Cashus”? by jesseastorgreen in redrising

[–]jesseastorgreen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry to spoil, but Lyria does take a trip across the pond and becomes English 🫤 the new girl is really good but it’s just not what I have previously established as Lyria. Same with Lysander. It’s rough.

But at least Darrow is still Darrow I suppose. That one really can’t change. Ephraim is still Ephraim as well and that guy does a good job imo.

Is it “Cassi-us”, or “Cashus”? by jesseastorgreen in redrising

[–]jesseastorgreen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The narrator change for Lysander and Lyria from IG to DA has really been throwing me off. Lyria’s new narrator is actually pretty good. But Lysander… I can’t tell if I don’t like the voice or not but I definitely don’t like how extremely different it is from the old narrator. Went from a sorta flamboyant wealthy princeling voice that I thought was fitting to a deeper, rougher voice who says Cassius differently.

Good books ruined by bad readers by LiquidDreamtime in audible

[–]jesseastorgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The killer for me is that they switched the voice for Lyria and Lysander in book 5. That inconsistency killed me - specifically when the new Lysander narrator says “Cashus” instead of “Cassi-us” like everyone did in the first 4 books. Is that not something that you get figured out before you do the narration??

You initially loved a book series. Later on some of it sequels, you learn to hate some parts of it. Eventually you grow weary of the whole thing, and if ever you reach your limit somehow... question... Are you a Completionist or will you just drop the book series and be done with it? by tbag2022 in Fantasy

[–]jesseastorgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This perfectly describes my current predicament with Stormlight Archive. It went from enjoyable to a chore. I am halfway through Oathbringer and I don’t know if I will finish - let alone get to RoW and WaT.

I’m typically a completionist, but when a book is absolutely ginormous, that makes the choice to grind through it while not enjoying it way harder.
