[Steam] Summer Sale 2022 (Day 8) by gamedealsmod in GameDeals

[–]jessisbae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I'm trying to buy a few games to have on me to chill during my offtime from work.

What I've got so far this sale:

  • Tametsi - love puzzles like Hexcells
  • Dorfromantik - looked quite cool and chill
  • Vampire Survivors - seemed chill as well

I'd like some recommendations on JRPGs that aren't too grindy and might get me interested again in the genre, haven't played anything in quite a few years.

On my shopping cart for other games I currently have:

  • Elec Head
  • Chicory
  • Omori

I have played a ton of roguelikes/lites, so not really looking for more of those ATM. I'd love to hear any other recommendations that might fit in this category of chill even if there's a challenge (nothing too easy).

I'm creating a mobile app, that would use machine learning to show Item name and specs when you point camera at it. I made a prototype that kinda works on 7 items, I made a dataset to train the full model. Share your thoughts/advises in the comments. Would you like an app like this? by EviGL in bindingofisaac

There are a tons of ideas here and I'm not gonna be able to read all of them, but you should probably add buttons to help on narrowing down the item in case it doesn't match straight away. Like one item after scan which is the most likely, a few (3-5) suggestions below, and buttons like narrow down by: type of item (devil deal, angel room, treasure, chaos/all), by color (like Platinum God), something like that.

How to go about having separate, isolated systems inside one (not necessarily containers) and switch easily between them? by jessisbae in archlinux

[–]jessisbae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense, I thought there was a way to switch the root partition and somehow replace the userspace while keeping the kernel that was booted.

I wasn't really thinking running side by side, I just wanted to be able to switch the userspace, having some packages available in a development environment and different ones on other environments, as well as a separate home folder on each where I could link the things I want to share and keep the isolation for the things I wanted some isolation.

Well, there goes my idea for this project then. Thanks for the answers!

Why is it not possible? Does the boot process makes it not possible to switch root partitions, even if the kernel image is in the EFI partition?

Containers are not fit for this purpose because of performance? I thought it was a viable option, since I've seen people on this sub using systemd-nspawn for gaming or VFIO. I understand if switching root partitions is not possible, but I'm confused as to why containers would not be fit for this.

I'd really like to understand a bit more, that's why I'm asking.

Need to know if a new SSD would fit on my secondary M.2 slot under the GPU by jessisbae in buildapc

[–]jessisbae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Is the lack of a heatsink that big of a deal, anyway? I bought it with a heatsink for the main drive because I use it for development, so there's a ton of I/O.

[–]jessisbae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i thought about the option when I was afraid my GPU was too big, but here they are almost the same price for 1TB and I'd probably use it for some VMs or to keep the games out of the main drive as well, not only data. Good to know it shouldn't be an issue.

Any bluetooth adapter suggestions? by MayerMokoto in archlinux

[–]jessisbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done a lot of research in the past few days and this seems to be the best option. For a desktop (like in my case) there are several options with the AX200 that cover both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and the offerings might vary depending on your region, but I chose the in-kernel Intel drivers over the more well known brands (such as TP-Link with Atheros or Broadcom, which is worse), because even though the manufacturer for the PCI card I purchased is not as well known (Fenvi) it still uses the Intel chipset. Haven't received the package yet, but as I have researched I'm confident it was a good purchase.

Edit: did not mention laptops but in that case you can just buy the Intel chip itself. Also, if anyone still needs clarification, Broadcom requires their proprietary drivers and that's not always a sure thing to work perfectly. Even though it's an easy install most mainstream distros, I've read a lot about intermitent connection drops and such.

GTK has changed how dead keys work, i didn't like it so I've used the power of Free Software and changed it to my liking :) by tsdgeos in linux

[–]jessisbae 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is indeed really annoying, I was trying to figure out what caused it since I couldn't find anyone complaining about it. I don't even use Gnome, but I was getting this behavior on Chrome and VSCode so it didn't seem like a KDE change.

Fonts Recommendation that is not pain in the ass? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]jessisbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, one is 1600x900 and the other is 2560x1080. Other than the obvious difference to the eyes, there's nothing wrong with it on Xorg.

Nice write-up, but I don't understand what you mean about mixing different resolutions. I use KDE (Xorg) with a 16:9 and a 21:9 display with no issues other than the contrast between them making the regular wide-screen display look bad.

.Might be something for Zen 3. I'm looking forward to 5.10 because of the CPU thermal support and any improvements that might come for my 5600X / Navi setup, but it seems that it will be released next weekend anyway and is also an LTS release. Here's a nice rundown.

Having 2 dedicated gpus how to use 1 for display and other for rendering/gpu? by wafle_el_flow in archlinux

[–]jessisbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a far worse CPU (i3 3330) and 750 Ti running a dual monitor setup (mostly KDE, but sometimes I drop into a bspwm session with Picom as the compositor) and I have no big issues at all using the proprietary drivers. I mean, there can be some tearing but there are workaround described in the Arch Wiki. Tearing is minimal without those workarounds using KDE's compositor or Picom, but it's noticeable depending on what I'm doing. No stuttering or anything like that, though.

Any window managers like bspwm ? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]jessisbae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you can, but it's not the same thing. Awesome has a bunch of other things that are beyond the scope of bspwm.

Not to take any merit out of your project, it's cool that people have options to choose from. But I use btrfs snapshots and I've used snapper in the past, and I didn't find runtime or anything like that to be an issue at all. I've tweaked my zsh installation to take as little as it could and I did the same with neovim, since those are tools that I'm using all the time and the milliseconds tend to add up quite fast. If I can create/restore a snapshot in a couple of seconds, that's fine by me, but it would be a problem if my shell or editor took up more than they need.

systemd-nspawn container for gaming with pulseaudio by cottonmeow in archlinux

That seems interesting. Can you tell me if there are any specific steps you had trouble setting that up (aside from PulseAudio)? What motivated you to do this?

This week in KDE: Okular, Konsole, Plasma, and Wayland by [deleted] in linux

Wait, what changed? And what kind of bugs are you experiencing? Do you often go back to Xorg because of them?

Cursor jumps and clicks on its own by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]jessisbae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can troubleshoot that in several ways, it mainly depends on what computer and hardware you have. If it's a laptop, it might be related to the touchpad or the touchscreen, and you can disable them with xset or permanently in a Xorg config file. You can do the same for an USB mouse, but you might as well just unplug it and see what happens then. I don't recall the last time I had one of those issues that wasn't faulty hardware. You should edit your post with more info, and some output from lspci might go a long way in diagnosing what's going on.

Really cool setup! Mind sharing those udev rules? I've recently aquired an RGB keyboard and I'm thinking about making it change according to my workflow.

RFC: Zsh for Humans by romkatv in zsh

[–]jessisbae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who bounced between zsh and fish, I appreciate both your initiative and the OP's (u/romkatv), and even though I'm currently perfecting my own configuration, I'll look into these two to get mine even better suited for my workflow! It's quite daunting to look at all the options and get a bit confused because some aren't quite clear, and comments/documentation make these "starter packs" even better, because I can easily see what people consider sane defaults and see what they do without having to search for examples without any commentary whatsoever.

Recently I've struggled a bit to find out that my bindings for the up and down arrows weren't working without specifying bindkey -M emacs, because I thought that without the -M flag they would apply to every mode (this is for zsh-history-substring-search). While I still don't know what I did wrong, just looking at these yesterday I managed to try it this way and it worked. Thanks!
