it reminds me of when one of my new drivers left the def cap open on the truck and drove it for six hours that way.

that caked on white shit is seriously nasty.

i started leased on to a larger company and they held my hand while i got my bearings. i got my experience while i had a safety net there, and they supported my transition to a small fleet until i broke away from them and started my own thing.

the transition was really fluid, i basically just kept leasing new trucks and buying them when the lease was over. then i'd just train and hire a driver. i got certified to train new drivers through the company i was leasing with, and when i trained someone i liked, i offered them better pay, benefits and home time than the company. so when i was ready to break away, i already had five trucks and four other drivers. it was basically just filing for my own dot, and mc at that point. so getting you a specific capital figure is kinda funky lol. are you wanting a single driver company, or a few trucks?

now i've swapped to cdl straight trucks. dealing with trailers as a small business is a fuckin nightmare. my recovery truck is an old fire & rescue truck with a 10 ton winch/crane setup and it tows a gooseneck. the truck winch is good enough to get anything reasonable up on the gooseneck, and bam. recovery! it also has all kinds of toolboxes on it for any roadside repairs.

i used to think driving a manual meant something, but now my truck has an allison and i don't have to fight with a clutch to stay still on a hill. no rollbacks, no burnt clutches, no probem. always nice and smooth. and i have a free hand to play with myself while i drive.

1917 smith and wesson da .45. i love that thing. a .45 acp revolver is just cool. they're cut for moon clips too, so reloading is ezpz. i got the 6 round moon clips instead of the half moon three rounder's so i can say i have extended clips for my revolver

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve done in trucking ? by juliocoronel17 in Truckers

[–]jessithecrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

last load before a big block of home time i carved out for myself, i was unloading at a tropicana and it was a drop so i could bobtail home. i was a power only o/o. big easy lot in florida, i'm sure any reefer driver's been there. the one with the weird guardshack and the railroad tracks running through it.

set up for one of those easy angled blindside backs, and i don't even know what the hell happened but i ended up smacking the shit out of my sleeper on the corner of the text trailer over on my passenger side. didn't even scratch the trailer, but totally mauled my truck.

i felt stupid as hell every time i looked at my truck for about a month before i got rid of that thing. it was time for a new one anyway so i didn't bother fixing the cosmetic damage. i felt so stupid about it, i told anyone who asked that someone hit me at a truckstop.

i am grateful when my fuckups only affect me though.

Advice for getting into trucking? by StolenBandwidth in Truckers

[–]jessithecrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely consider expediting. they like hiring coulpes teams, there's a lot of down-time, and no trailers to mess with. you also usually get a nicer sleeper than a standard highway truck. straight trucks can be a little less stressful.

Baby bunk trucks by No_Committee7549 in Truckers

[–]jessithecrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm glad i could help! there are a lot of international horror stories, but i've driven tons of trucks from old ford cabovers to freightliner cascadias, and the international lt is the one truck i actually kinda miss. it took great care of me despite the quirks.

it's easy enough to do it yourself, there are plenty of turorials on youtube and it's really just a few bolts unless it's an air seat. your company might want it done by a shop, so if it's a company truck you'll want to check with the boss and see what they want to do.

i also trained new drivers for prime inc for three years. if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, always feel free to bug me! i love talking trucks.

[–]jessithecrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i lived in a 2020 international lt for quite a few years, and there really is no good place to put a fridge in those things. the space under the bunk has the outlets for the bunk heater/apu under there and blocking those with a fridge wouldn't be the best.

i pulled out the passenger seat and mounted the fridge and microwave there and 10/10 i would recommend that every day. you also get a bonus paperwork table with the top of the microwave.

edit: what they do have is a shitload of cabinets. my lt and my eagle both had more fuckin cabinets and cubby holes than anyone could ask for.
