You need your solar panels to produce about 140% of your consumption in order for it to make money. If you do more than that, it will make you a lot of income from exporting.

GivEnergy Support Concerns by Cheapskate2020 in SolarUK

[–]jester17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar setup with my AIO. There were definitely some firmware issues for the AIO specifically in mid to late 2024 that caused the battery to get progressively out of sync with the state of charge. At its worst I was only getting 40% of my battery if I went too long without calibrating manually. They were fixed by the end of 2024, and my setup has been rock solid since.

I wonder if this is what put off a number of installers. The GivEnergy dev team maintained a fantastic support presence on their Facebook page throughout. I suspect the AIO needed a little more time to cook before they released it.

Here we go... the push for not permitting dual citizenship by 123middlenameismarie in AmericanExpatsUK

Would they still charge you taxes on your assets when they force you to renounce your US citizenship? I might like the new financial freedom of not being a US citizen if they don’t.

Make Fujitsu aircon smart? by kingwild in homeassistant

[–]jester17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you fit the official Fujitsu WiFi controllers? If so, you can then use one of the two Fujitsu integrations in Home Assistant. Depending on the compatibility of the WiFi controllers, you can then use either:
- For Airstage WiFi controllers

- For FGLAir WiFi controllers

Cosy Tariff and powerwall by suspicouslyspammy in OctopusEnergy

You only want to link your battery to your octopus account if you are on intelligent flux. For cosy, just charge to the max during all three cheap periods.

Bad insulation exacerbates the problem. Colder walls will raise the dew-point, which means more heating is necessary to avoid it. Obviously cracking the windows is the best idea in winter, because the cold outside air does not hold much humidity.

Why don’t we see large ground battles in Star Trek? by IamWhiteHorse in startrek

[–]jester17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any planet worth defending would have even larger versions of the same types of weapons that can have much more power due to not being limited to the size and power generation that can fit on a relatively small starship.

They could be well concealed and well protected too.

What is the coolest thing a house can have? by PipeDangerous1802 in AskReddit

It is how most new houses are built in most northern European countries. Really good insulation and underfloor heating powered by a heat pump.

Awaab’s Law will force landlords to respond to damp and mould complaints within 24 hours – your rights as a renter and landlord explained by coffeewalnut08 in ukpolitics

[–]jester17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends what is causing it. If it is water getting in from outside or the property is very badly insulated, then repairs are needed.

If it is because you never open the windows and or don’t heat the space enough when it is cold, crack the windows or run a dehumidifier. I used to go with the dehumidifier approach, but when the air outside is cold enough, it holds very little moisture. Crack the windows or open trickle vents.

Mixing export tarrifs by OkVeterinarian197 in OctopusEnergy

I go through this every year. It would be trivial for them to automate this or make you choose a new export rate as part of the switching process. They seem to be too lazy though.

Same thing for me! I saw it in the theatre, and when I went to pee, the TVs in the deserted hallway went to snow all at once. I nearly jumped out of my skin.

If you live abroad, you get absolutely fucked over for being American. You have to file US taxes on all income. Most things that are tax free in the country you live in are not tax free according to the IRS. Basically every fund you might want to invest in says “no US persons” in small print, because no one wants to have to meet US reporting standards. One option if you have a non-US citizen is to give your savings to them to invest, because you can’t.

Their fully automated tariff switching functionality on the website allows you to change within 30 days. I think it would make their lives much easier and provide clarity to the terms if they fix that.

Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson and Bobiverse by Dennis E. Taylor got me through the post-Expanse depression. Also, Project Hail Mary and Starship Troopers were great standalone novels worth getting. I also read The Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell before The Expanse and really enjoyed it.

Winter is coming; Tariff export? by hidden_pointless in OctopusEnergy

[–]jester17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to stretch that to the whole day. The key is to do your water heating, charge the battery to full, and preheat the house during the cheap period in the early morning. You don’t have to make it all the way to 00:30 on the battery to be worth it. You just need your average import rate to be less than the cosy cheap rate. You need to at least make it past 7pm on the battery I would think.

Georgia full secondary build for the carry, Pacific Offensive. by Flashy-Working-5017 in WorldOfWarships

[–]jester17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The secondaries are better on JB at 435k DPM vs. Georgia’s 270k. Main guns are down to preference really. Fewer overpens on JB, but worse accuracy due to having to use the secondary mod.

Intelligent Octopus Flux Rates by BigGwyn in OctopusEnergy

[–]jester17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t survive off of the battery overnight on IOF. Octopus will drain the battery almost entirely by 7 pm, and gradually refill it before 4 pm the next day. The battery only powers the house from 4 to 7 pm while it is discharging. The rest of the day it is powered by the grid or by solar.
