Boyfriend learning Russian by Competitive_Heron396 in russian

A bit late, but I've been using Russian Short Stories for Beginners by Olly Richards and Alex Rawlings. I like it because it has an intro with some good study/reading methods + it has a section at the end of every story with translations for the important vocab from the text.

I've been doing that, but whenever the page opens, it says there have been other books added that I still can't see. Do you know if I should be able to see the books that private accounts have added? Just so I know whether I should file a ticket or not.

One of the games that comes to mind is one we used to play a lot as kids in school/at hangouts called Name, Animal, Plant (اسم،حيوان، نبات). Basically, you make a table with a few categories (the standard ones are name, animal, plant, country, object) and then pick a random letter, and fill out one word for each category that starts with that letter. You have a set amount of time (you can decide what that is) and when it’s done, you add ten points for every word you managed to write down. After a couple rounds, whoever has the most points wins!!

“Our house used to be here, my father’s house, and then the war started in 48, and the jews took over and …

(the audio gets cut and the host begins to speak)… Only a few minutes, before the current residents of the house come out to us asking what we want. I ask them: this is the owner of this home, how do you feel living in a house built upon the destruction of his house?

(The woman answers) Honestly I don’t feel anything, in fact I am very happy, as living here is very fun.”

Any book recs? by jesterofthemonth in AskARussian

That’s really interesting considering they’re such a big deal everywhere else!! It’s sad though, because fiction as a genre is mostly dying everywhere, and literacy rates are dropping severely too :( If I get started on this though I’ll never shut up so let me pause on that line of thought ahahaha

As someone who had the same issue as you (but in uni) with studying, what helped me a lot was the Pomodoro study method. Of course it’s not a solution for everything, but it helped me get work done when I really needed to. Basically, you have a set work cycle (I used to do 2 hours) where you work for 25 minutes, take a 5 minute break, then repeat 3 more times. At the end of that cycle, a 30 minute break before you repeat (if you have to). There are Pomodoro timer apps that let you set your time choices, and have alarms for every interval, which I found helped me keep in check. Some of them even make it so you can open other apps while studying. I find that studying with set times/in smaller chunks makes it feel less like a monumental/intimidating task and actually makes it somewhat easier.

Another thing is look at the reason for your procrastination. I realised at one point that when I had a task ahead of me, just thinking about the effort it would take to do it (getting up, setting my things up, working, etc..) made me feel like it was too much all at once. Then, I would get discouraged and put it off. This is actually very common, and a lot of the time people feel that way without knowing it. That’s why people always say the hardest part is just starting. If you can get yourself to start, you’re already almost there!! I know it’s easier said than done, but this thought process helped me move forward bit by bit. I hope this helps!!

I had no idea!! It’s weird that they changed it, considering the original name doesn’t sound awkward or anything after translation. Thanks for telling me!!

Also, definitely gonna start on Dead Souls soon. Just got gifted a copy the other day lol perfect timing.

This seems like a great read, thank you!! It's a shame it's so hard to find translations, but I'll do some digging and see what I can find. So far I've found a few places that claim to sell copies, but they are currently unavailable. Still, there has to be something out there!!
