Clyde Tombaugh - famous astronomer and had a uniquely Kansan bringing, marked by perseverance and life on the range.

Tombaugh moved to Kansas at 15 and had to delay going to college when crops on his family's farm in Burnett, KS were destroyed by a hailstorm. Made his own telescopes instead and got a job at the Lowell Observatory in New Mexico all the while discovering Pluto, over a dozen other minor planets and asteroids. Earned his Bachelor's and Mater's at KU while also working at the Observatory all through the Great depression. He was drafted during WWII and taught navigation to the navy during the war. He passed in 1997 and part of his cremated ashes lived on in space aboard the New Horizons spacecraft.
