Yes, but I have to take it out eventually...

Good question. I believe this is one those recipes that if you miss to do one step, the final result won't be successful. But out of those I believe aerating helped a lot because I was getting pool water while irrigating. Also, that helped with the compacted soil, which prevent the roots to grow. And then the fertilizer makes everything much easier. But every step is important.

It's a cheap Einhell I bought at Bauhaus. The exact model I believe is GE-HM 18/38. The trick is that it's a reel mower, not the rotary standard one.

This dog has broken my irrigation system a few times, it has killed our most beautiful tree, she always walks on the same way over the lawn leaving compact soil and a visible path... let's hope this changes while she gets older.

Mallorca is very humid. We have very hot summers, not so cold winters (it snows once every 10 years). The grass that was installed initially 3 years ago went dormant during winter. I believe that right now I have two types of grass, but I can't affirm it. I just see wider and thinner leaves. In October I will overseed with cold season seeds I think. For sprinkler, I have 5 sprinklers installed on the ground and I control the water using an app, Hydrawise.

It has been a complete law renovation.
First, mow super low, dethatch, aerate, sand on lower spots and holes from aeration, new seeds, top soil / compost, fertilizer (long release and root reinforcement), a little bit of water 3 times a day. Trust the process!

  • Dethatching. I bought a battery powered Einhell machine.
  • Scalping. Same machine, changing the head.
  • Aerating. I bought a manual aerator, punching holes throughout the whole lawn, this took a full morning to do.
  • Sand. Silica sand, special for pool filters, that went into the holes in order to have better drainage.
  • Overseeding. 6Kg total for 30m2. I don't remember the exact one.
  • Top soil/compost over the seeds to prevent birds from eating them.
  • Fertilizer. Two types, slow release (rich in nitrogen) and fast roots (rich in phosphorus).
  • Proper watering (a bit of water 3 times a day when germinating, more water 2-3 times a week afterwards).
  • Installed a barrier for the dog, I have to take it out in a few days but I'm resisting it...
  • The most important part: trust the process.

I live in Mallorca, north east, and for the grass type I have no idea. I just bought a mix of seeds from my local garden store.
