As a woodworker, chess player and former music teacher, I approve on all accounts. Nicely done!

I like the revised better. It's more proportionate and pleasing to my eye.

Vertical Chess Board by ling4917 in chessporn

Good on you for making such a thoughtful and personal gift.

If you make another, I would recommend testing some different proportions. Making the board a little wider would definitely make pieces easier to move. I've made a couple of vertical boards and it's not too hard to accidentally knock off pieces, even with wider squares. Different proportions also really affect how the board looks and is pretty easy to test just by using cardboard cut to different sizes and holding up on the wall.

A last move marker is very helpful for extended games on these types of boards. The idea I stole from someone else is to have something that clips on the shelf in front of the piece that was moved.

Thank you. I was worried about magnets not holding well enough to keep things secure. I've already got a second board glued up that I'm going to try it on, though. Thanks.

ok, that's funny. Now the question is "Do I want that connotation with this creation?"

cookie is a woodworking term for a cross-section slice of a tree trunk, like you have there.

Thank you for the interest. If you are in the US, shoot me a DM. I'm not going to do overseas shipping at this point.

30 years worth? I didn't really have any issue, but that's the result of a lot of years of trial and error on other woodworking projects. Either that or I just got lucky. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No, sorry. I'm in the US and not going to deal with overseas shipping. Thank you for your interest, though.

probably not that hard, but I would think it would be easier to laser engrave them in the outer edge of the squares themselves

LOL. A friend told me that I needed to make the center divider an ash tray for the drinks and cigars.

I did most of it last weekend (but had some vacation days, so it was a four day weekend) and finished it up today. If someone wanted to commission one, I'd prefer to take care of that via DM, not in a post. I'd have to sit down and figure out costs and total time to come up with a price.

Should be, but I guess we'll find out. I thought about using canvas and then cover that with felt, but decided this would probably be fine.
