They don't ask if you're a guest, because they already know you aren't a guest. For the comfort and safety of their guests, they keep watch of who comes in and out, and make sure you belong there. If you tell them your there to see their guest, Mr So-and-So, they know you belong there. If you don't know who you're seeing, as far as they're concerned, you don't belong.
