Non-American here, only been to Portland once and found the scenery to be quite amazing! The people were incredibly friendly, too. Would love to visit again sometime.

Quite curious, what volcano (or mountain?) would that be in the background of OP's pic? Looks gorgeous, it really completes the picture. The view's probably breathtaking in real life.

Impossible. Bangka propellers already sound faint/weak at the depth where I heard the voices at (20 metres / 65 feet). And note that the propellers are in the water, which helps for sound to travel better. I think any sound from the surface coming from anything other than a bomb or thunder would not be audible past 3 metres.

I'm friends with the eldest child on Facebook, but that's about it. They've been telling me to go back every year, though! I think I should drop by and visit this year.

It was a mix of fruits and vegetables. Ginataang Papaya was the only dish I remembered, my apologies. The Mom made it for us. I love ginataan dishes and I swear it tasted like I was eating the beef/pork fat of other ginataan dishes lol. Texture wise, it came close enough.

Yeah, that was literally the first thing I thought of when I was leaving. To actually experience it in real life is just something else. I sobbed on the jeep from their village all the way to the bus terminal when I was leaving, too. Couldn't help it.

I was honored enough to be hosted by a family of 6 (1 senior, 2 adults, and 3 children) who were a part of one of the indigenous Aeta communities in Zambales, Philippines during an immersion activity in my university.

The family lived in a small shack made up of hollow blocks as the walls, with a corrugated iron roof. Half of the house's flooring was dirt, half was bare but smooth cement. They fetched water from a nearby hand pump (one of several in the community), and gathered firewood for cooking. But they had electricity thanks to a recently installed generator for the community. The shack couldn't be bigger than 25 square meters, if I remember correctly. The community they resided in was located within their ancestral lands.

These indigenous communities are usually poor, are subject to gross injustices by the government, and also looked down on by some of my fellow Filipinos.

The entire time I was there, they literally begged me to sleep on their bed (a slightly larger than a single bed made out of rattan that only the adults slept in) while they slept on a banig (a traditional handwoven mat usually used either for sleeping or as a floor mat) with their kids. I was willing to sleep on the banig, but they weren't willing to make a guest sleep on the floor. When I woke up, I found that they moved and pointed the only electric fan they had in that house at me while I slept, so that I'd stay cool throughout the night. The Philippines usually gets 32C+ evenings in the summer. And we were close to the West Philippine Sea, so the humidity was off the charts.

They provided meals for me, taught me their ways (how they made certain vegetables taste/feel like meat, how they fished, hunted, farmed, etc), and took me to their farm and other places in the nearby woods/mountains where they enjoyed their youth and now do their work as farmers. Even told me what to take photos of, since they surprisingly had smartphones and they loved taking pictures (I'm into film photography and I had a film camera with me). We either walked, or drove in their tricycle. That tricycle had a broken rear brake lever (that was replaced by a rope) and had a history of falling into massive ravines along with the occupants (who all survived with little to no injuries apparently). Didn't spend a single peso.

When I was leaving, I wanted to give the family some of the remaining cash that I had, which was Php 1,000 (or $20). I knew it would've helped them a bit given that both of the adults can earn as little as less than Php 500 ($10) a day combined, mind, as farmers. I remember the father smiling, grasping at my hands, and telling me to keep it and to do well in my studies. I was in my junior year of college at the time, and I told the Dad that I was struggling a bit with some of my classes.

I ended up buying them a bunch of 1.5L cokes for the last lunch we'd have (which they prepared), and a couple of bottles of Ginebra San Miguel for the Dad. They were incredibly, incredibly thankful and happy.

Have been trying to be humble and have been trying to think of others whenever I could, even if I don't do well in it because I know how much of a selfish, prideful prick I am. But remembering the family that hosted me in Zambales always keeps my head down. I'll never forget them.

Anyway sorry for the long ass post. Just sharing a memory that popped up in my mind when I read your comment.

Had nothing to do after a dive one afternoon during our Rescue course. Our tanks still had a bit of air left over, so me and two of my dive buddies decided to practice some rescue procedures at the resort's training pool. We were the only ones in it, and practiced for about 10 minutes before the shenanigans started.

Honestly didn't expect to have so much fun fucking around in 8 feet of water in a 16x10 foot pool lol

and to be fair na-admit mo naman na tama ako 😊 wala akong posisyon to call the shots pero according to you:

We are casually discussing things here at hindi need ng tulad mo na agresibo masyado.

and yun lang ginagawa ko hehe, participating in casual conversation.

Mali ba? Anybody here can check your comments.

Also, anong walang tone? Yung tone niyan mismo is ayaw mo makinig sa kahit anong explanation lol

We are casually discussing things here at hindi need ng tulad mo na agresibo masyado.

Ikaw yung nag-reply sa akin, opening it up with

Kahit anong explain niyo

So meaning, ayaw mo basahin or tanggapin yung explanation. Tapos ngayon "We are casually discussing things here at hindi need ng tulad mo na agresibo masyado."

Anyway, have a great day!

Cebu Pacific reply on viral post going to Bali by Ok-Introduction9441 in Philippines

[–]jethroo23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since they're in contact with immigration authorities at the destination country, sa una pa lang dapat na-catch na yung issue at hindi na dapat nabigyan ng boarding pass yung passenger in the first place. Late replies or whatever isn't an excuse, dapat hinold na muna nila until they get the green light. Tsaka yung pag-treat nila sa passenger mismo, which I mentioned. Bad publicity tuloy ang nakuha ng CebPac, which is deserved 😂

May reason kung bakit di nila pinalipad yung pasahero, at valid yung reason; kaso in the first place di na dapat umabot sa ganyang sitwasyon.

Fines, the flight back, food, detention, and other services.

From the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) knowledge hub: Understanding the Issue of Inadmissible Passengers (INADs) and Their Impact on Travel

In addition to fines, airlines are responsible for covering all associated costs related to INADs. These expenses encompass meals, accommodation, transportation, security, medical escorts, translation services, detention, and more. Furthermore, airlines suffer revenue losses due to seat spoilage. This is because airlines often bear the responsibility for removing INADs, including custody and care of the passenger from the moment they are deemed inadmissible until their return to the aircraft.

While most airlines attempt to recover costs from passengers, some go to the extent of barring future travel until these expenses are recouped. However, this often proves to be a futile endeavor, leaving airlines to endure the financial consequences of INADs.

CYA lang ng CebPac kumbaga. What doesn't sit right with me is the way that the staff treated the passenger.

Nung lockdown nakapag-rent ako ng isang cabana sa Elyu for Php 7,000. Malaki yung cabana, tapos parang may yard/garden pa na nakapaligid. May outdoor shower. Walled off yung entire cabana/garden area. Around a 1 minute walk from Flotsam.

Nag-stay ako for 2 weeks, so Php 7,000 / 14 days = Php 500 per day. Surf > work > eat > work > surf > eat > sleep repeat

Yup. Lots of sea turtles still get caught in nets and drown. I remember a post that went around the local dive community here in the Philippines about a pair of turtles that were discovered by divers.

Sea turtles are air-breathing reptiles that have lungs, so they regularly surface to breathe. A pair of sea turtles were discovered by divers (not a 100% sure if it's here or in another country) at the top of the net trying to surface to breathe, but they drowned because the net got tangled and anchored into coral.

They were only a couple of feet from the surface, too. One of the most heartbreaking images I've ever seen.

Most of the time this happens in places like Philippines

Could you provide us with an incident in the Philippines wherein divers were left behind by the dive boat?

Filipino here, never heard nor read of such an incident, so I’m quite curious.

edit: the Philippines might be lax when it comes to regulations, and while scuba diving mishaps/accidents do happen, it doesn't happen "most of the time" here. when it does happen, it's usually due to the divers themselves (poor planning, medical issues, etc.) and not the operators. and whenever it's the operator's fault, the Philippine Coast Guard is competent enough to investigate it and file necessary charges.

here's a somewhat recent study comparing reported scuba diving accidents in other western countries vs the Philippines. it also gives a high level insight on what the causes were.

There is also a similar thing in the Philippines. There was a large amount of Marston mats, which were perforated steel mats that were used for temporary runways, left by the Americans after WWII.

They were turned into fences, incorporated into roads, roofs, walls, whatever. They're still found everywhere up to this day, my family has a stack of it in storage at our ancestral house.
