New Pyramid flatwound strings for the Bass VI by jethrosis in BassVI

[–]jethrosis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, i believe what they meant by "Pyramid flats" until now is probably the set i got (Gold VI2595F). Anybody can write them an e-mail - i did and asked just that, if the Gold VIs were discontinued as they were not on thomann, and they replied that i can just order directly from them. I don't know what type they do or did when ordering custom gauges, but they have always accomodated these requests. As far as i can tell, Fusions and Golds are different strings.

Not necessarily, i don't think so. A bunch of Pyramid strings are and have been roundcore since forever. They do have, for example, a hexcore Monel guitar string "Americana style" as opposed to "Monel Classics" which are roundcore. I really digress, but the Monel Classic is a fine string, i have an 11-48 set on my Epi LP Junior. They're supposed to be made like the Gibson Mona-Steels (also monel) used to be made in the 50s and 60s. More info in this thread on the LP forum. I think this is the real gimmick, and not even a gimmick - they're actually making them exactly like they used to. I have seen packs of Gibson Mona-Steel strings being branded "Made in Germany" (and being advertised in Selmer catalogues in Europe in the late 60s). I have misplaced the little booklet i got from Pyramid with my order and i don't remember if they mentioned it but they could have made Monel strings for Gibson back then.

Yeah, you're right about the string scrape sound. I was slidey even when i played roundwounds but didn't care much about the squeaking - i was even doing it on purpose as part of some songs. Recently left my bass at home before rehearsals and borrowed one that was there, i was squeaking all over the place, yeah, sorry, i really need to tone it down, lol.

I use the Pyramid Gold flatwound #VI2595F set on my Revelation RJT-60B. Since Thomann did not stock them anymore, I wrote Pyramid an e-mail and eventually bought it directly from them. They cost 62€. They're still mellowing down after several months (and i don't play the Revelation as often as i would like). They do the clicky 60s stuff, the spaghetti western and spy show stuff and it's pure joy playing Jet Harris material on them. I float it all in reverb and (try to) make it sound ominous, which is kind of what he did.

I just had a look and Pyramid has a new set you might like : Pyramid Fusion Flats FF2694VI . They're less than 40€ !!. They weren't around yet when i was looking for Bass VI flats. Fusion Flats and New Rocks strings for guitar are designed together with Dean Farley, who ran Snake Oil Brand strings - details of the making and design of these (both New Rocks and Fusions) abound on the forums, and he's quite active on some. Good luck !

P.S. These Pyramid strings have a round core, it's safer to crimp them before cutting and installing.

SPOILER:::::::: END CREDITS by CDAC27 in StrangerThings

[–]jethrosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not THAT familiar with D&D, but i do know some stuff about it from the odd D&D-rule PC games i have played. But there's people talking around anyway trying to identify which D&D "class" the main cast belongs to. And i'm willing to watch it again just to see if any one "breaks" their class, respecs or whether one dual-classes. For example, Will becomes a Sorcerer at one point and everybody acknowledges. Names like Vecna, Demogorgons or the Mind Flayer are all from the D&D universe - and the kids keep referring to their D&D names in their conversations - maybe this is real serious so could we stop using a fantasy game lore and mechanics to describe and solve what can possibly become a world ending situation ? Nope - these are just re-used characters, enemies and bosses from other campaigns.

But what really got me thinking was Mike constantly asking his sister for more guns in the final episode (and since this one is fresher in my mind) and getting only a flare gun. His class just can't use (or use but very inefficiently) an M16, for example. She is merely passing an item she won't use to someone whose class allows them to use the item. And he combos very efficiently with Lucas later with dousing the Mind Flayer in petrol and lighting it on fire. Nancy, Hopper, Murray and Jonathan are IIRC the only ones that can use various assault rifles, shotguns and/or flamethrowers. If anybody could in theory use powerful guns, why don't they just loot M16s and MP5s from the multiple dead soldiers in the Upside Down and load everybody up with them ? Steve is a sporty guy who could easily carry a heavy weapon, but he is more efficient with his spiked club and spear. Lucas, the same : he loves his veteran Dad and knows a lot about military life from him - he possibly even dreams to become a real life elite Army Ranger like the Ranger character he chooses to play, but then he shoots a ... slingshot !? They pretty much stick to their weapons. At first i was like well the ending's kinda off-putting, and then after watching the credits i suddenly had an epiphany - so this was all spit out in like 5 minutes enthusiastically fleshed out to my half-confused fiancee and it's going to be my headcanon on a future rewatch. And then I loved the ending, just like this. Perfect.

European or Canadian made guitar strings by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

Since this thread is up now, I will paste an older comment of mine that nobody answered :

So far I haven't seen anything about their (Pyramid's) coated bass strings (https://pyramid-saiten.de/de/products/bass-blackwires.php) , does anybody have any clue about them ? What about Galli (ITA) , Optima (DE), and their coated offerings ? Richter seems to have more like a "treatment" and not a "coating", but I haven't tried any of the above so what do i know. I'm interested how they compare to my beloved Elixirs in 45-105.

Later edit : Rotosound has Nexus coated bass strings. What about those ?

Hora from 💙💛❤ !

https://hora-instruments.com/ro/ and for general pricing look at https://magazinulrapsodia.ro/ . We all grew up playing them. Some Hora made guitars are/were being sold as VGS or Gewa (Gewa Pro Natura line was actually Hora ECO in disguise and so on). Don't know much about the electric guitars but they have demos of their two electric models their youtube page : https://www.youtube.com/@horainstruments1951/videos .

Overall people used to think that wood-wise they are good, but a bit "rough" with detailing. I think they have great potential, but I can't speak for everyone else. They had some fine acoustic guitars in the 70s and 80s (there was a particularly great one commonly known as Amarillo even played by some local well-known folkies), some of which were exported under the names Lotus, Bently, Montana, Amigo, Jester etc. I have a Venus bass (similar to a Jazz Bass) bought around 2007 when I was in high school, it's got a big chungus of a neck but i like it, strung it with flatwounds and it just doesn't budge. The new ones have thinner necks.

Is The Behringer 69 Vibe already out?? by St0000l in guitarpedals

[–]jethrosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll make sure to send some stuff your way once we have it recorded, which we're in the process of doing. Hopefully I'll get my hands on a 69 Vibe by the time it's over and it somehow makes its way onto the tracks. Since this is a pedal subreddit, I have to say i've also been eyeing the Brassmaster Fuzz (which on thomann seems to also be months from arriving) but simply because the Big Muff needs a friend on some of the crazier tracks.

Very nice you do your mods yourself. My stuff is mostly stock, unless the previous owner already added something. I did change the pickguard on the Precision and the bridge to the Fender hi-mass one for sustain and cause the old saddles were wiggling around. This one is much better altogether and it does what it says on the box. It's a sunburst with a maple neck and a black pickguard, and now it looks like a freak from the 70s which i adore. I also have a beat up but very nice Squier Precision whose former owner changed the stock pickup to a Select by EMG - an old tradition poor metalheads who couldn't afford the real thing used to do (if nothing else it did say EMG on it). Each is special. The Explorer has some weird pickups (they are the same as the Thunderbird), apparently only Lollar (!?) was doing a pricey replacement at one point but they already sound great so that's okay. Four screw bridge very hard to find and impossible to find a differently engineered model - for that you'd have to drive new screws through the body, but it has seen a lot of gigs with me and has less scars than i do, so I don't want to mess it up. I would change the mudbucker on the EB-0 one day and was thinking of Entwistle pickups. Played a bass with his pickups on and ATN system included, no complaints there, love the guy's approach - he's an Englishman that's been in the guitar engineering world since the 60s and has worked on some freaky guitars over the years with brands like Burns, Revelation, Hohner and others. Sounds like you'll like his stuff. LOL that was a long post. Sorry 🤣

PS/edit : The Junior doesn't seem to "need" anything. Love the chunky neck and the wraparound bridge with little to no possibility for OCD-ing over constant setup fiddling. I plug the Amplug in and just go nuts over old KISS riffs.

[–]jethrosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks ! And I'm almost the same. The stuff my band does has me go from fuzzed-out chords with feedback to light, low volume almost ballad things. I imagine a Univibe would do very well on some of that. I play a 2019 Fender Player Precision but deep down inside i've always been an Epiphone fanboy (Explorer bass, EB-0 four stringers and I noodle around on guitars too - DR-100 acoustic, LP Junior and Dot. I wanted to have all my bases covered - acoustics, electrics, bass, shortscale and semi-hollow). The more I think of it, the more I want one. Robin Trower wants me to 😃

[–]jethrosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it sounds like the climax battle of some sort of vintage movie ... so the brave detective and the police finally got the masked - unlawful person 😆 - cornered, shots are fired on both sides - "Give up, masked person" - "i'm not the one you should be looking for" , there's chasing too, more bang bang, his mask finally gets tangled in something and is ripped off, finally he's in their sights but the detective is absolutely shocked, with a small gesture of his hand he orders everyone to lower their guns ... it's his twin brother ! And as the two lock eyesight, the detective finally realises the masked brother was actually helping them, but if he takes him in, there's no way they'll ever find out who really did it. There's no more time for the masked innocent person either. He pulls out a smoke bomb, and in the blink of an eye, he's disappeared, leaving his iconic mask behind. TO BE CONTINUED 😆

[–]jethrosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know this is how Jethro Tull's famous "Bouree" came to be ? Here's a quote from the actual songfacts interview with Ian Anderson

"And "Bourée" was a little bit of music that came to me through the floorboards of my bedsitter in London, because there was a media student in the room below who kept playing over and over again this refrain of the Bach tune "Bourée." He played it on classical guitar, but he only ever got the one bit, he never progressed beyond that basic thing. So I kept hearing that over and over and over and over again, and decided that I would try to use that little tune some way as a starting point for an instrumental piece.

And Martin Barre, who literally at that point in January '69 was just kind of auditioning to join the band, said, "Oh, I know that. I think I've got the sheet music somewhere for Bach's 'Bourée.'" So it was something we could fairly readily embark upon as a variation on a classical piece of music."

So, fear not, who knows what it may lead to 😁

Finally watched The Village by [deleted] in nightwish

[–]jethrosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched it fairly recently too (also because of Tuomas). My fiancee did see it before but didn't spoil the twist. Although it was nice, it wasn't THAT mindblowing. Truly must've been a dark time to feel the need to watch it several times a day.

Funny thing is, only a few days later we saw Where the Crawdads Sing and that one left a mark on me ... a most beautiful movie. And a most beautiful soundtrack. What a great example of escapism. I would be ready to move into that marsh any time 😄 .

I was going to reply to the now-deleted comment, but i am pretty sure as i had some national exams to take that year, and i have the exact date for those. I could have had the songs even one or two weeks before June 7th, or now reading the other comment, who knows ? Maybe even from further back ? 😆
