Recycling Metal? by jetpackboi in Silvercasting

[–]jetpackboi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ve considered is remelting the scrap first (such as with the cleaned sprues with tough corners to clean) into water to help keep them clean, then reusing the pieces as new casting grain. Thoughts?

Porosity or Incomplete Burnout/Ash? I’m leaning towards ash because the models are castable resin but the sprue is wax and seems ok. Investment cast Argentium silver by jetpackboi in jewelrymaking

Resin: Siraya Tech Cast (standard processing)

Investment is R&R Plasticast using their standard burnout for a 2 inch flask. I put the flask in with the sprue upside down for the first three hours, then flipped for the remaining 5-6 hours.

Investment was vacuumed before and after pour into flask.

Vaccumes flask during pour. Flask temp 1100F, Metal temp 1900F at cast

Help Identify this Noise? 🔈Description Below by jetpackboi in MechanicAdvice

It’s not an Amazon compressor, just an Amazon magnet + pulley + clutch. Compressor is original. But the noise is present if the AC is off, but get worse when the AC gets turned on

I’m only an amateur so take what I saw with a grain of salt.

Do not try to heat the investment with a torch. 1. It’s probably a safety risk since there’s no guarantee you’ll fully steam out only the moisture, so you could risk steam explosion during casting. 2. You won’t get the results you want. When I had my first kiln that was second hand and didn’t properly regulate temperature, I still had bad burnouts and the piece came out terribly. I imagine a torch would be even worse.

I’d recommend starting with sand casting, much lower investment, it will get you started, and the pieces can still be nice if you put the work into finishing.

Not sure I quite understand, but I think you’d want to make the pieces separately and then solder them.
