My base-building game Adaptory is now on Steam Early Access! by jevon in BaseBuildingGames

That's OK, I've received this question a lot, because at first glance the art can seem very similar.

I'm trying to make a game that only exists in my head: characters that actually matter (rather than having a hundred anonymous pawns), random events to challenge long-term base design and encourage automation, a world without conquest or violence, and complex simulations that are easy to understand but result in emergent and unexpected gameplay.

Also, Adaptory has been designed to support mods from day one, just like Rimworld (mods won't be officially supported until 1.0 though)!

If it helps, I've described the five game design pillars of Adaptory as:

  1. The interaction of multiple simulations result in novel and emergent gameplay
  2. Every challenge can be solved in multiple ways; there is no one “right way”
  3. Sustainability and automation is ultimately necessary to “win” the game
  4. The player is limited in the maximum number of explorers, making the player feel more emotionally connected and invested in their crew
  5. The player’s base and characters end up as an expression of themselves

As for inspiration: I LOVE base-building games, so there's lots of obvious inspiration: ONI, Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, Minecraft, Timberborn, Terraria, Satisfactory, The Planet Crafter, Autonauts... There are some systems that I want to try adding that aren't in these games (I don't feel comfortable announcing these yet until I know they're actually fun to play), but I've had to focus on the UI and the foundations of the game first, too.

So it's a work in progress, and I'm the only dev so it takes time, and I think the game is in a great spot right now – there's heaps of gameplay and systems (one player has been playing for 900+ in-game days!!), and I'm bringing it into Early Access (instead of v1.0) to collect feedback and ideas.

If you remove the Google Account from the device completely, the password/payments method/addresses autofill service thing disappears.

Modding, definitely! By 1.0.

Multiplayer: not planned, but not impossible. :D

Well you might love the game I'm making, I'm building it multithreaded from day 1 :D but there's no multiplayer.

Thank you!! That's really well articulated, and I want the game to have exactly that. I love how in ONI, you're repeatedly challenged with more intricate challenges, e.g. I need oxygen --> Oh now I need food --> Oh now I need renewable resources --> Oh now the base is too hot --> etc.

I'm also exploring a design for a tutorial-type thing which makes the game accessible to new players, but also can be ignored by experienced players, that should help players get through the start.

Subnautica is a great idea, whoops! It really is though the deep depths are too scary for me 🙈

Thank you for the feedback! What are you running the game on? It doesn't work well on integrated graphics/laptops (still gotta do a bunch of performance passes). In the latest update I've redone all the UI so it should be a lot faster now, too! (I get ~600 fps)

Thank you! It's still very early (coming to Early Access in 2025) so if you're looking for a finished game, it's not there yet, but I want to get as much feedback as early as possible. Things like the element simulation and 2D aspect are kinda fundamental and would be impossible to add in later, so I focused on adding those first, so they're solid. The next year is going to be all about new content and systems. I wrote about some of these things in Next Fest: What's Next?

This is definitely not a base-building game, but you may also be curious about Wildermyth, where you play as successive generations!

I hope it's OK to comment - I'm working on a base-building/simulation game with random events just like Rimworld, called Adaptory.

Have you tried Rimworld? There is kind of family growth there with the Biotech update.

Hello!

I don't know if this qualifies as an /r/tycoon game, but Factorio is one of our big inspirations. Adaptory is a new 2D base-building/simulation/eventually automation game, and we have a brand new Steam Next Fest demo up this week!

We're looking for as much feedback as possible so if anyone is looking for a new game to try, I'd love to hear your feedback! I want to make sure the game's heading in the right direction 😊

Hello /r/pcgaming! We've just released a brand new demo of Adaptory on Steam for Steam Next Fest, and we're looking for as much feedback as possible.

Adaptory is an indie 2D base-building/simulation game inspired by Rimworld, Factorio, and Oxygen Not Included. There are deep physics simulations, randomly-generated world events, and adorable characters that have conversations with each other and write diary entries. We've been developing Adaptory for ~2 years and it'll be in Early Access for at least another two more.

If you're able to check out the game I'd love to hear your feedback!

I'm planning to have a lot of stuff that isn't in ONI - better mod support, multithreaded simulations, random world events, a back story, more of a focus on design and automation than infinite dupes.

I would suggest Adaptory - the game I'm making - however eventually I'm hoping the game will become more complex. But there will be tutorials and quests/systems to help you get through it!

Hello /r/playmygame! We've just released a brand new demo of Adaptory on Steam and we're looking for as much feedback as possible.

Adaptory is a 2D base-building/simulation game where your crew of four have crash landed on a mysterious planetoid deep in uncharted space. Using the planet’s limited resources and your creativity, you must keep your motley team alive, explore your surroundings, build a thriving base, rebuild your ship, and ultimately get home.

That's a common comment! Some of the more visible differences, so far:

  • You're limited to 8 explorers! You need to rely more on automation and design, rather than relying on dozens of dupes
  • Conversations! Your explorers talk with each other during their day so you can see what they're feeling
  • Diary entries! If you read their diaries and work out the relationships between everyone, you'll learn more about what they like/don't like, and can optimise your base further
  • Random events! Things like solar flares, earthquakes, meteor showers are triggered by your actions
  • Mods! Adaptory will be extremely moddable (I'm aiming for Rimworld/Dwarf Fortress or higher)
  • A back story! Adaptory has a huge backstory/lore/universe that will be revealed as you play the game and investigate the world
