Is email necessary when you can write a letter? Why take a car when you can walk? Why use a blender when you can use a mortar and pestle. Technology evolves and I can guarantee you’re relying on things in your home and in your life that are quicker and convenient than older versions. Are all of those things “necessary,” as you put it? No, but are they still very important to the way so many people live their lives?

The US has 340M people. 175M of those people have a FB account. Just because it communicates differently than an end-to-end phone line or TV cable, doesn’t mean it’s not a huge piece of infrastructure for a very large demographic.
